Book Synopsis De Fato, Latin by : Marcus Tullius Cicero
Download or read book De Fato, Latin written by Marcus Tullius Cicero and published by Aris and Phillips Classical Te. This book was released on 1991 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cicero and Boethius did more than anyone else to transmit the insights of Greek philosophy to the Latin culture of Western Europe which has played so influential a part in our civilisation to this day. Cicero's treatise On Fate, though surviving only in a fragmentary and mutilated state, records contributions to the discussion of a central philosophical issue, that of free will and determinism, which are comparable in importance to those of twentieth-century philosophers and indeed sometimes anticipate them. Study of the treatise has been hindered by the lack of a combined Latin text and English translation based on a clear understanding of the arguments; Dr Sharples' text is intended to meet this need. The last book of Boethius' Consolation is linked with Cicero's treatise by its theme, the relation of divine foreknowledge to human freedom. Text with translation and commentary. (Aris and Phillips 1992)

Book Synopsis Boole's Logic and Probability by : T. Hailperin
Download or read book Boole's Logic and Probability written by T. Hailperin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1986-10-01 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition in 1976, there has been a notable increase of interest in the development of logic. This is evidenced by the several conferences on the history of logic, by a journal devoted to the subject, and by an accumulation of new results. This increased activity and the new results - the chief one being that Boole's work in probability is best viewed as a probability logic - were influential circumstances conducive to a new edition. Chapter 1, presenting Boole's ideas on a mathematical treatment of logic, from their emergence in his early 1847 work on through to his immediate successors, has been considerably enlarged. Chapter 2 includes additional discussion of the ``uninterpretable'' notion, both semantically and syntactically. Chapter 3 now includes a revival of Boole's abandoned propositional logic and, also, a discussion of his hitherto unnoticed brush with ancient formal logic. Chapter 5 has an improved explanation of why Boole's probability method works. Chapter 6, Applications and Probability Logic, is a new addition. Changes from the first edition have brought about a three-fold increase in the bibliography.

Book Synopsis Secundum Naturam (According to Nature) by : Ron Hall
Download or read book Secundum Naturam (According to Nature) written by Ron Hall and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2020-04-09 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stoicism is a logical philosophy. Herein, one may learn to reason like a Stoic, which leads to making progress toward living in accord with nature, and from which an abiding happiness is produced. Secundum Naturam is an exploration of Stoicism, given the thesis that the philosophical doctrines derive from Stoic logic. Itself, Stoic logic derives from one, first principle: contradiction does not exist in nature, although we contradict nature when we err. The connectives, modalities, and argument resolutions are all defined with respect to contradiction as conflict (between Both p and Not p). And when your will contradicts nature, you are living contrary to nature, while the goal is to live secundum naturam, according to nature. Best of all, learn how to improve yourself with Stoic logic, according to reason, according to nature, only with Secundum Naturam.
