Book Synopsis Liberation of Dogma by : Juan L. Segundo
Download or read book Liberation of Dogma written by Juan L. Segundo and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-08-04 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a playful foreword that isn't, Juan Luis Segundo calls his present work posthumous - both because the sensitivity of the topic puts any future works in jeopardy, and because it provides the logical key to all his previous theological work. Thirty years a theologian, Segundo has tried to interpret the meaning of the gospel for believers today. One of the pioneers of Latin American liberation theology, he has tried especially to discern the relevance of faith to the emancipation of human beings from conditions of oppression. In 'The Liberation of Dogma' he turns to foundational questions of Christian faith seldom addressed by liberation theology: the meaning of revelation, and its articulation in dogma. Beginning with a brilliant historical survey of the development of scripture, Segundo lays the basis for his understanding of revelation as a process of divine pedagogy, an interaction between God and the human community in which the latter learn how to learn. The subsequent history of dogma reflects a continuation of the biblical story as the church learns to test and apply paradigms of faith to the challenges of an unfolding cultural and historical situation. Segundo examines the collision that occurred in the Middle Ages, when Greek dogmatic formulations -carefully worded to address problems posed by Hellenistic culture - were imposed on the new barbarian tribes as ready-made truths. This resulted in the loss of a dynamic understanding of revelation and faith, from which the church has only emerged since Vatican II. In his conclusion, Segundo develops a theology of revelation attuned to the signs of the times, a perspective influenced by the experience of Latin America's base communities. According to Segundo, Knowledge of God as 'revealing' something occurs to us when we are discovered to have a historical sensitivity that converges with God's own intentions. It is from a perspective and practice attuned to the Reign of God that we are free to discern God's revelation in history today.

Download or read book What are They Saying about Dogma? written by William E. Reiser and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviews the present status of dogma as a category of Roman Catholic theology. Examines and weighs what contemporary thinkers such as Rahner, Kasper, Dulles, Baum and Schillebeeckx have been saying about dogma and its role in the modern religious world. Dogma, historically, is the antithesis of heresy. What dogma affirms, heresy denies. And yet we have come to see that not all religious positions can be summed up under those two headings. Believers today are able to appreciate the nature of the dynamics of pluralism. Dogma in the twentieth century must be sensitive to a legitimate variety of viewpoints among Christians who attempt to come to grips with religious faith.
Book Synopsis Faith Without Dogma by : Margaret Isherwood
Download or read book Faith Without Dogma written by Margaret Isherwood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is a constant search for meaning, and reflective minds need to find deeper and more comprehensive meaning than that normally proffered by the orthodox teaching of any creedal religion. When this book was initially published in 1964, religion had begun to recognize the importance of psychology and psychology had considered a spiritual principle in man. Miss Isherwood’s purpose in writing this book is to relate science and religion more closely. Her theme is that the evolution of consciousness from protozoa provides a link which not only gives grounds for faith in life and an inspiration for carrying development forward, but which reveals that, as we continuously work at deepening our insight into the realms of spirit, the life process appears to us as steadily more meaningful. Her engaging writing style makes this a fascinating glimpse at a philosophy of religion starting to engage with science.

Book Synopsis What Is Dogma? by : Cardinal Charles Journet
Download or read book What Is Dogma? written by Cardinal Charles Journet and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dogma is one of those words. Many people see dogma as a bad thing-as the unreasonable, unthinking adherence to a belief, even in the face of contrary evidence. But when the Catholic Church presents some of her teachings as dogmas, she does not mean that these tenets are irrational or to be thoughtlessly embraced. Dogma is the bedrock of truth, an inexhaustible feast for the mind, not an impediment to thinking. Why? Because dogmas rest on the Word of God, Truth Himself, who can neither deceive nor be deceived, and who wants his Word to be known. The great theologian Charles Journet explores the meaning of dogma in his classic work What is Dogma? In what sense are dogmas an object of faith? How do reason and faith relate to dogmas? How are dogmas both essentially unchangeable and yet open to development? Are dogmas accessible only in learned theological language or are there common-sense ways of understanding them? Journet addresses these and other important questions. He also discusses examples of dogmatic development: the dogmas of the Trinity, of Christology, and of Mariology. And he explores the relationship of dogma and mystical contemplation. In short, Journet shows why "dogma" is a subject of which Catholics need not be afraid.
Book Synopsis Dogma’s Primrose Path by : John L. Martinez
Download or read book Dogma’s Primrose Path written by John L. Martinez and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dogma’s Primrose Path addresses how the perpetual presence of ignorance, poverty, and war throughout the world is accepted by most people as an inevitable consequence of human life given man’s incurably evil, greedy, and violent nature. John L. Martinez argues that this almost universal acceptance is itself a dogmatically learned and programmed condition. This book suggests that human beings need to discard their dogmatic straightjackets and begin to thrive upon reason, logic, perception, and experience in order to live together fruitfully and peaceably.
