Book excerpt: In a world where survival comes at the cost of truly living, is love enough to mend their broken wings? Behind the power suits and the flashing, flirty eyes, Wren has a secret vulnerable side. Following the devastating loss of her father and the discovery of a bird journal they made in her childhood, she sets out to find something she just can't name. Is that something--or someone--tied to the little paper cranes she keeps finding along the way? With no one left to understand him, black sheep Laurie Byrd pours out his heart into letters and drawings he never intends to send--then he folds them into paper cranes that he leaves behind like messages in little winged bottles. He never dreams someone might be finding them. God damn it, Sylvia, for a few moments I tricked myself into feeling really alive. I cut it off before anyone got hurt, but just for a moment or two, I really thought I might feel something again--something like trust. Something like love. Not the kind of love we had, but something new. Something like hope. "Can you go home again? Maybe not, but you can find home when you stop running from the past."~ Katina F, Amazon reviewer "A sweet romance in the new adult fiction genre, this book completely delivers. The setting of the story against a backdrop of 'birding' was fascinating, in that it introduced a world to me that I know nothing about, and a unique way of two people finding each other. Pick up a copy!" ~M. Frastley, Amazon reviewer "I must admit that when I got to the end of this book, I let out a tiny whimper from under my breath. It was over and I didn't want it to be; the style of writing was unique, fun, quirky and witty." ~JC at All Is Read "Sweet and delightful." ~Yolanda, of Yolanda Has So Many Books And So Little Time

Book excerpt: A “raw, relentless, and heart-poundingly real” (Ruth Ware, New York Times bestselling author) thriller set against the harsh beauty of the Maine wilderness, The River at Night charts the journey of four friends as they fight to survive the aftermath of a white water rafting accident. Winifred Allen needs a vacation. Stifled by a soul-crushing job, devastated by the death of her beloved brother, and lonely after the end of a fifteen-year marriage, Wini is feeling vulnerable. So when her three best friends insist on a high-octane getaway for their annual girls’ trip, she signs on, despite her misgivings. What starts out as an invigorating hiking and rafting excursion in the remote Allagash Wilderness soon becomes an all-too-real nightmare; a freak accident leaves the women stranded, separating them from their raft and everything they need to survive. When night descends, a fire on the mountainside lures them to a ramshackle camp that appears to be their lifeline. But as Wini and her friends grasp the true intent of their supposed saviors, long buried secrets emerge and lifelong allegiances are put to the test. To survive, Wini must reach beyond the world she knows to harness an inner strength she never knew she possessed. With intimately observed characters and visceral prose, The River at Night “will leave you gasping, your heart racing, eyes peering over your shoulder to see what follows from behind” (Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author). This is a dark exploration of creatures—both friend and foe—that you won’t soon forget.

Book Synopsis Indentations and Other Stories by : Joe Schall
Download or read book Indentations and Other Stories written by Joe Schall and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1990-12-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indentation and Other Stories is a collection of nine stories ranging from the wildly funny and idiosyncratic to the downright bizarre. The title story features a pathological dentist who seeks a quirky catharsis by decorating his apartment in hygienic dental paraphernalia. Other tales frolic through the lives of characters who border on the delightfully absurd: a woman, after going through menopause, struggles to recreate her menstrual periods by altering her diet; a former New York street reporter, fired because of his "ideals," aspires to become a credible street person and decides, tentatively, to have a religious experience; an English major turned psychologist writes a pseudoscientific "article"—complete with footnotes and a University of New Jersey cover letter—which argues, by example, for the use of figurative language in scientific journal writing. Other stories are more humanizing: "The Perils of Asthma" is a sympathetic lok at a twelve-year-old boy struggling to grow up amidst his perplexing asthma, his eccentric Catholic parents, and his mystifying quasi-erections. All of the stories are grounded in the allure of language, the luxuriance of detail, and the celebration of human compulsion and obsession.

Book excerpt: COMING OF AGE This true story starts with a boy growing up in the sixties who had to deal with a disabled Dad who was a war vet. His dad was said to have been dragged off the battlefield, placed into the army's mental institution, and forced to receive electrical shocks to the brain. The only thing required for this war vet to be released was just a simple signature from anyone who would take full responsibility for this disabled vent. This vet was part of a family and was known to be abusive to his wife and children who were under his care. This story is about a boy in the ’60s who felt he may have been raised on the wrong side of the railroad tracks. This boy, known as Ronnie, had to live and survive the ordeal of living with this mentally ill father and a very young mother who was married at the young age of thirteen. The boy was being mentored by some believers in God and the environment he had to grow up in. In the sixties, things were very different. There were no cell phones or computers, and you had more time to try and stay out of trouble or get into trouble. Boys coming of age at that time were required to take showers at school and dress according to school regulations. If you got out of line, you got your butt spanked. A boy allowed to wander the neighborhood could sometimes find himself in serious trouble or awkward situations. In the sixties, boys, running around in the buff, and skinny dipping were not unheard of. This boy felt blessed by angels looking over him for some of the life-threatening situations he found himself in. This is his story….
