A parallel can be drawn to recreational sailors who are comfortable sailing in local or coastal waters but have not totally mastered the skills of returning the boat to the slip. Watching neighbors expertly guide their boats into slips and hearing them discuss terms like prop walk and spring lines, they realize there may be a gap in their knowledge. Now for the good news - this is the book you've been looking for. It is the most complete book written on everything you should know about docking your monohull or catamaran. Covering boat characteristics, environmental effects, and different scenarios, you will find a technique to safely dock your boat under any condition. Designed to be read in conjunction with American Sailing's 118 Docking Endorsement course, it is also a stand-alone book for any sailor wanting to improve boat handling skills. You will find everything you need to know in this 137-page book. - Learn why your boat handles like it does - Learn how to assess the variable effects - Learn to use external clues to assist your maneuvering - Learn to use spring lines and prop walk to your advantage - Impress your boat neighbors with your new skills - Learn to love docking

Book excerpt: A review of the literature relating to the role of prediction in manual control resulted in substantial evidence indicating that learning to control vehicles in complex maneuvers such as orbital docking is primarily a matter of learning to predict the future states of the vehicle. The purpose of this project was to: (a) investigate the relation between the ability to predict and manual control skill, and (b) determine the effect of prediction training on learning vehicular control. Two simulated docking experiments were performed. The results supported the hypothesis that ability to control is highly correlated with ability to predict. It was also demonstrated that while prediction training alone is no more effective than standard training, a combination of the two training methods appears to be much more effective than training in either control or prediction alone. It is therefore recommended that manual control training programs incorporate training in prediction. It is also recommended that associated training devices be revised or developed so as to incorporate means of training prediction skills and of measuring prediction capability. (Author).

Soon it’s clear that their prisoner could bring down everything they once believed was worth dying for—and everything they now have to live for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true story told through the eyes of an Officer who served twenty-two months aboard the LST. The ship was scheduled for a six-month tour in the Mediterranean. On January 7, 1952, the ship sailed into a devastating storm, and six hours later, they were losing cargo overboard. In addition to the loss of cargo, the ship is plagued with a navigator threatened with failure to carry out a direct order. In Malta, the LST hits two water barges and one British LCM. Two crewmen were fighting in Naples return to the ship, where one stabs the other; the LST collides with the refueling tanker; two crewmen fighting aboard ship and one threatens the Exec; forty crewmen end up fighting on the main deck; and a duty officer nearly falls overboard. Finally, the ship is beached in Terceria with a large hole in the bottom of its hull. As if that’s not enough, the Captain and Exec bring lady friends aboard the ship; the crew attempts to sail without the Captain and Exec and end up sailing into a force 3 hurricane. Captain Black Mark is the story of all these things. As incredible as it sounds, is it any wonder that the captain develops irrational fixations that his superiors were aware of everything that was happening and that it was these things that prevented him from being promoted.

The stage is set as two lovers forge their lives together and invent new technology to overcome forces set in motion by man's many years of neglect. A new hero arises from the ranks: G.I. Joe Rieu. About the Author Jerry R Brenning lives with his wife of 55 years in Indian Lake Estates, Florida. After a long engineering career, he is able to pursue his passion for painting and inventing. After years of seeing man inventing ways to explore our world, it is obvious that something is missing. I believe space litter is a hidden problem, destined for disaster.

Homo sapiens Terra has become Homo sapiens Galactica. Following the invention of faster-than-light travel in 2530, the Great Hegira went from a trickle to a flood as human-occupied space expanded at an exponential clip. Over the centuries, rivalries grew, as did star system navies. When widespread war finally came, it raged across entire sectors. Mass bombardments of enemy planets took their toll. Much that had been built during the preceding thousand years was smashed in flashes of nuclear fusion. A dark age descended. Eventually, a new Pax Galactica took hold. The return of stability brought with it a renaissance. Much knowledge that had been lost was regained. Much, but not all. On worlds across human space, parents told their children stories of a place where once dwelt knights and princesses, magicians and dragons, where bold warriors sallied forth to victory or defeat. What the children did not learn was where this magical place could be found. The years of chaos had robbed them of that information. The stellar coordinates of Sol were lost. And with them, the location of Planet Earth.
