Book excerpt: Catch documentation schemes (CDS) are just one in an array of tools designed to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The schemes provide a means for countries to cooperate in providing information about the legality of fish as it moves through the supply chain, from catch to market. Many countries are familiar with the specific information requirements on CDS forms; some, however, are less aware of the need for robust national systems to validate and verify that information. This document seeks to align and improve existing national monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) tools, as well as product tracking systems, in order to support more effective national CDS implementation and strengthen CDS throughout the international supply chain. The document contains chapters on the legal and policy background to CDS, an introduction to the features and requirements of existing schemes, as well as guidance on how to handle CDS information requirements and identify national key data elements. Finally, it provides a series of exercises for assessing relevant national capabilities and coordination processes, including the management and exchange of information.

Book excerpt: From the participation of researchers in most important international conferences in the field, it is noted that activities in automatic document processing have been continuously growing. This book is an edited volume in Digital Document Processing where the chapters are written by several internationally renowned researchers in the domain. It will be useful for both students and researchers working on various aspects of document image analysis and recognition problems. It contains chapters on topics that are not covered by any textbook, but are more futuristic like “Going beyond the Myth of Paperlessness”, or interesting application areas like “The Role of Document Image Analysis in Trustworthy Elections” as well as “Word Recognition for Museum Index Cards with SNT-Grid”. Persons developing document analysis software for industry may also find the chapters useful and attractive. The language of the chapters is simple and clear, along with drawings/diagrams wherever necessary. An adequate number of references are given at the end of each chapter. Overall, the book is highly readable and will be an asset to the community. Book excerpt: This Open Access book presents feedback from the ‘Territorial Agroecological Transition in Action’- TATA-BOX research project, which was devoted to these specific issues. The multidisciplinary and multi-organisation research team steered a four-year action-research process in two territories of France. It also presents: i) the key dimensions to be considered when dealing with agroecological transition: diversity of agriculture models, management of uncertainties, polycentric governance, autonomies, and role of actors’ networks; ii) an operational and original participatory process and associated boundary tools to support local stakeholders in shifting from a shared diagnosis to a shared action plan for transition, and in so doing developing mutual understanding and involvement; iii) an analysis of the main effects of the methodology on research organisation and on stakeholders’ development and application; iv) critical analysis and foresights on the main outcomes of TATA-BOX, provided by external researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains all papers presented at SSPR 2002 and SPR 2002 hosted by the University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada, August 6-9, 2002. This was the third time these two workshops were held back-to-back. SSPR was the ninth International Workshop on Structural and Syntactic Pattern Recognition and the SPR was the fourth International Workshop on Statis- cal Techniques in Pattern Recognition. These workshops have traditionally been held in conjunction with ICPR (International Conference on Pattern Recog- tion), and are the major events for technical committees TC2 and TC1, resp- tively, of the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR). The workshops were held in parallel and closely coordinated. This was an attempt to resolve the dilemma of how to deal, in the light of the progressive specialization of pattern recognition, with the need for narrow-focus workshops without further fragmenting the ?eld and introducing yet another conference that would compete for the time and resources of potential participants. A total of 116 papers were received from many countries with the submission and reviewingprocesses beingcarried out separately for each workshop. A total of 45 papers were accepted for oral presentation and 35 for posters. In addition four invited speakers presented informative talks and overviews of their research. They were: Tom Dietterich, Oregon State University, USA Sven Dickinson, the University of Toronto, Canada Edwin Hancock, University of York, UK Anil Jain, Michigan State University, USA SSPR 2002 and SPR 2002 were sponsored by the IAPR and the University of Windsor.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, the author makes several contributions to the study of design of graphical materials. The thesis begins with a review of the relationship between design and aesthetics, and the use of mathematical models to capture this relationship. Then, a novel method for linking linguistic concepts to colors using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation Dual Topic Model is proposed. Next, the thesis studies the relationship between aesthetics and spatial layout by formalizing the notion of visual balance. Applying principles of salience and Gaussian mixture models over a body of about 120,000 aesthetically rated professional photographs, the author provides confirmation of Arnhem's theory about spatial layout. The thesis concludes with a description of tools to support automatically generating personalized design.

Book excerpt: We introduce a lazy XSLT interpreter that provides random access to the transformation result. This allows efficient pipelining of transformation sequences. Nodes of the result tree are computed only upon initial access. As these computations have limited fan-in, sparse output coverage propagates backwards through the pipeline. In comparative measurements with traditional eager implementations, our approach is on par for complete coverage and excels as coverage becomes sparser. In contrast to eager evaluation, lazy evaluation also admits infinite intermediate results, thus extending the design space for transformation sequences. To demonstrate that lazy evaluation preserves the semantics of XSLT, we reduce XSLT to the lambda calculus via a functional language. While this is possible for all languages, most imperative languages cannot profit from the confluence of lambda as only one reduction applies at a time.
