Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before now, biological systems could only be expressed in terms of linear relationships, however, as knowledge grows and new techniques of analysis on biological systems is made available, we are realizing the non-linearity of these systems. The concepts and techniques of nonlinear analysis allow for more realistic and accurate models in science. The Future of Pharmaceuticals: A Nonlinear Analysis provides an opportunity to understand the non-linearity of biological systems and its application in various areas of science, primarily pharmaceutical sciences. This book will benefit professionals in pharmaceutical industries, academia, and policy who are interested in an entirely new approach to how we will treat disease in the future. Key Features: Addresses a new approach of nonlinear analysis. Applies a theory of projection to chalk out the future, instead of basing on linear evolution. Provides an opportunity to better understand the non-linearity in biological systems and its applications in various areas of science, primarily pharmaceutical sciences. Helps change the thought process for those looking for answers to their questions which they do not find in the linear relationship approach. Encourages a broader perspective for the creative process of drug development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drugs are administered to patients with the intention of achieving an expected therapeutic response. Yet drug therapy remains a medical art because of the wide variation in individual responses to standard drug doses. Pharmacogenetics emerged as a field aimed at identifying heritable factors that are predictive of individual variations in drug efficacy and toxicity from the dedicated work of a small group of investigators who in the 1950s began to enrich the discipline of pharmacology by integrating it with human genetics. Pharmacogenetics provides the experimental framework to understand variation in human reactions to drugs and other exogenous substances as a function of inborn human genetic variability. Recently, pharmacogenetics has experienced a period of rapid growth and redefinition. The human genome initiative has provided a wealth of primary genetic information and functional genomic data to fuel the understanding of genetic polymorphism and its functional consequences on a genomic scale. Today, the field of pharmacogenetics is a well-integrated, worldwide network engaging a vast community of academic, institutional, and industrial scientists. The second edition of this highly regarded book provides a systematic and comprehensive account of the foundations, fundamentals, and futures of the field of pharmacogenetics and serves as introduction to all facets of pharmacogenetics for physicians, pharmacists, epidemiologists and other professionals in the life sciences. Dr. Wendell Weber has completely revised and updated each chapter in this new edition to reflect the enormous changes in this field.

Book excerpt: Learn to implement effective control measures for mutagenic impurities in pharmaceutical development In Mutagenic Impurities: Strategies for Identification and Control, distinguished chemist Andrew Teasdale delivers a thorough examination of mutagenic impurities and their impact on the pharmaceutical industry. The book incorporates the adoption of the ICH M7 guideline and focuses on mutagenic impurities from both a toxicological and analytical perspective. The editor has created a primary reference for any professional or student studying or working with mutagenic impurities and offers readers a definitive narrative of applicable guidelines and practical, tested solutions. It demonstrates the development of effective control measures, including chapters on the purge tool for risk assessment. The book incorporates a discussion of N-Nitrosamines which was arguably the largest mutagenic impurity issue ever faced by the pharmaceutical industry, resulting in the recall of Zantac and similar drugs resulting from N-Nitrosamine contamination. Readers will also benefit from the inclusion of: A thorough introduction to the development of regulatory guidelines for mutagenic and genotoxic impurities, including a historical perspective on the development of the EMEA guidelines and the ICH M7 guideline An exploration of in silico assessment of mutagenicity, including use of structure activity relationship evaluation as a tool in the evaluation of the genotoxic potential of impurities A discussion of a toxicological perspective on mutagenic impurities, including the assessment of mutagenicity and examining the mutagenic and carcinogenic potential of common synthetic reagents Perfect for chemists, analysts, and regulatory professionals, Mutagenic Impurities: Strategies for Identification and Control will also earn a place in the libraries of toxicologists and clinical safety scientists seeking a one-stop reference on the subject of mutagenic impurity identification and control.

Book excerpt: Numerous pharmaceutical substances and their metabolites have been identified in the aquatic environment. Due to their unique environmental fate and lack of appropriate biomonitoring techniques, the potential risk of these compounds to public and environmental health has largely been undetermined. Recent interest in quantifying pharmaceuticals in waste effluents and aquatic environments has identified the need to develop bioanalytical assays that will accurately reflect presence of these compounds. The goal of this research was to investigate the use of DNA microarrays as a bioanalytical tool for analysis of pharmaceutical contamination in re-use waters. Results from this study suggest that prototypic pharmaceutical contaminants target molecular events associated with pharmaceutical-induced gene induction and repression in exposed organisms. Gene expression profiles are subsequently evaluated as a means to discern pharmaceutical exposure. When fully developed, this bioanalytical approach will provide an efficient and robust method for screening pharmaceutical contaminants in reuse and other water matrices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal biotechnology is a broad field including polarities of fundamental and applied research, as well as DNA science, covering key topics of DNA studies and its recent applications. In Introduction to Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, DNA isolation procedures followed by molecular markers and screening methods of the genomic library are explained in detail. Interesting areas such as isolation, sequencing and synthesis of genes, with broader coverage of the latter, are also described. The book begins with an introduction to biotechnology and its main branches, explaining both the basic science and the applications of biotechnology-derived pharmaceuticals, with special emphasis on their clinical use. It then moves on to the historical development and scope of biotechnology with an overall review of early applications that scientists employed long before the field was defined. Additionally, this book offers first-hand accounts of the use of biotechnology tools in the area of genetic engineering and provides comprehensive information related to current developments in the following parameters: plasmids, basic techniques used in gene transfer, and basic principles used in transgenesis. The text also provides the fundamental understanding of stem cell and gene therapy, and offers a short description of current information on these topics as well as their clinical associations and related therapeutic options.
