Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1980s Maun is reminiscent of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick’s 1880s Barberton, and Django is no less of a character than the legendary Jock of the Bushveld. Named for the hero in a spaghetti western, and oblivious to his diminutive statue, Django, a Jack Russell cross, squares up to the challenges life as a safari guide’s dog throws at him. As a pup he puts the ferocious Pitbull terrier Buford firmly in his place; the only other animal to have done so was a hyena. Django’s baptism to life in the bush takes place at the tender age of not-quite-a-year old. With Peter and Salome he embarks on an arduous trek through the Okavango Delta and it is here that his humans quickly learn to heed his warnings and pay careful attention to his intuition. Over the years, and as he notches up safaris Django develops a keen understanding of life in the bush, his nose, eyes and ears are an early-warning radar system to the less-in-tune humans and many is the time that his sharp sense of danger saves lives. These are wild, remote parts of southern Africa, angry buffalo, venomous snakes and stampeding herds of elephant are common if unsuspectingly stumbled upon. Django holds his own in the face of a lion charge and endears himself to the locals of these sacred lands. In his travels he wins the hearts of a tribe of Kalahari Bushmen, descendants of the oldest people on earth. In the Namib Desert he encounters the red ochre-adorned Himba people who try to claim him for their own, and while venturing into the remote Kaokoveld he befriends the most endangered tribe in Africa. In one interlude, in the depths of Barotseland, Zambia, a young boy, influenced by tribal lore regarding the white man, flees screaming in fear of being eaten by these strange white-skinned people and their dog. As the shared adventures in this odyssey unfold, the reader cannot help but fall hopelessly in love with the intelligence and charm of this plucky terrier. His adventures are woven into an enthralling tapestry that reveals a host of intriguing, colourful characters, an understanding of the hyper-specialized ecological system of the Delta and some truly hilarious encounters. Praise for Django: ‘…a wonderful read – an experience more than just a read actually.’ Trish Frielinghaus ‘One of the greatest pleasure of reviewing books for publishers is when really great ones come along – this is one: Django by Peter Comley’ Lesley Cripps Thomson ‘…magic book, with a free flowing writing style; very Bill Bryson, with a proper African view! I feel I knew Django.’ Julian Hill ‘Wonderful and so beautifully and wittily written. Great treat.’ Heather MacDonald ‘We very much enjoyed the delightful story of Django.’ Anthony and Sandy Collier

Book excerpt: In the tradition of the beloved New York Times bestsellers Marley and Me and Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love, a charming, inspirational memoir about empathy, resilience, kindness, and an adorable deaf blind pink dog. When Connecticut veterinarian Melissa Shapiro gets a call about a tiny deaf blind puppy rescued from a hoarding situation in need of fostering, she doesn’t hesitate to say, “yes.” Little does she know how that decision will transform her, her family, and legions of admirers destined to embrace the saga of the indomitable pink pup. One of the most anxious dogs Melissa had ever encountered, the traumatized Piglet weighed under two pounds upon his welcome into the Shapiro household—which included Melissa’s husband Warren and their three college-aged kids, plus six other rescued dogs. After weeks of reassurance, and lots of love, Piglet connected, gained confidence, and his extraordinary spirit emerged. Melissa soon forged a powerful bond with Piglet, allowing the two to communicate without sound or visual cues. Two months later, when the day arrived to say good-bye to the now dashing, six-pound pink boy dog with the larger than life spirit, Melissa faced a heart-wrenching decision. Could she hand him over to someone willing to give Piglet the full-time attention he required or could she adapt her schedule and her household to make a permanent place for him in her life and work? Of course, the answer was simple: love would find a way. Curious, engaged, and incredibly eager to learn, Piglet quickly became part of the family. What started out as a few simple Facebook posts of Piglet and his pack rapidly evolved into a global celebration of Piglet’s infectiously positive mindset. Piglet: The Unexpected Story of a Deaf, Blind, Pink Puppy and His Family fully illustrates this heartwarming story of one special little puppy with a purpose to teach the power of empathy, love, and kindness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visiting Martin Luther King, Jr. at the peak of the civil rights movement, the journalist William Worthy almost sat on a loaded pistol. “Just for self-defense,” King assured him. One of King's advisors remembered the reverend's home as “an arsenal.” Like King, many nonviolent activists embraced their constitutional right to self-protection—yet this crucial dimension of the civil rights struggle has been long ignored. In This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed, civil rights scholar Charles E. Cobb, Jr. reveals how nonviolent activists and their allies kept the civil rights movement alive by bearing—and, when necessary, using—firearms. Whether patrolling their neighborhoods, garrisoning their homes, or firing back at attackers, these men and women were crucial to the movement's success, as were the weapons they carried. Drawing on his firsthand experiences in the Southern Freedom Movement and interviews with fellow participants, Cobb offers a controversial examination of the vital role guns have played in securing American liberties.

Book excerpt: "But what Emily Jenkins and Chris Appelhans’ lyrical collaboration is really about is the intoxicating thrill of friendship, and boundless joy of play..." –The New York Times A “merry read-aloud.” –The Wall Street Journal Winner of the 2018 Zena Sutherland Award for Best Text From a heavyweight author and illustrator duo comes a delicious tongue twister of a picture book that features a little round greyhound and a little round groundhog. With very spare, incredibly lively language, this is an entertaining read-aloud, with two amazing—and oh-so-adorable—characters at its heart. When a greyhound meets a groundhog, wordplay and crazy antics ensue. The two animals, much like kids, work themselves into a frenzy as they whirl around and around one another. (Around, round hound. Around, groundhog!) The pace picks up (Around and around and astound and astound!), until they ultimately wear themselves out. “Jenkins’s masterful text is deceptively simple.” —NPR on Toys Meet Snow by Emily Jenkins “Appelhans, whose career up to now has been in animated films such as Coraline, is a revelation.” —Booklist, Starred, on Sparky!, illustrated by Chris Appelhans “Appelhans makes an auspicious picture book debut with strikingly beautiful watercolor and pencil illustrations. His style, reminiscent of Jon Klassen’s, incorporates a muted color palette, but with a slightly softer, rounder quality, while also weaving in visual deadpan humor.” —The Horn Book

Book excerpt: The e-mail Danny and Allison read on their new computer in 1996 looks no different from the millions of others received by Web users around the world, with one glaring exception--it was sent by their dads who died during the 1970s. While residing in the afterworld at an amenity-laden paradise called Midway Manor, guitar-strumming Mickey Parks and piano-playing Lloyd Wallace monitor and manipulate the lives of their adult children on earth from the mid-'70s through the 1990s. Tampering with the facility's sophisticated computer, the dads thrust Mickey's daughter Allison and Lloyd's son Danny into a passionate but sometimes stormy relationship-a relationship steeped in Danny's heavy drinking and entangled in the often-zany world of men's adventure magazine publishing. After carefully implementing a plan to send their son and daughter a gift of knowledge that could enrich their lives forever, the dads' brief contact is cut short. They are banished to another destination in the afterworld, but not before they impart indisputable proof of life after death--and unwittingly put Danny's and Allison's earthbound lives on the line.

Book excerpt: Sisters Lark and Clef have spent their lives honing their bodies for sleight, an interdisciplinary art form that combines elements of dance, architecture, acrobatics, and spoken word. After being estranged for several years, the sisters are reunited by a deceptive and ambitious sleight troupe director named West who needs the sisters' opposing approaches to the form--Lark is tormented and fragile, but a prodigy; Clef is driven to excel, but lacks the spark of artistic genius. When a disturbing mass murder makes national headlines, West seizes on the event as inspiration for his new performance, one that threatens to destroy the very artists performing it. In language that is at once unsettling and hypnotic, Sleight explores ideas of performance, gender, and family to ask the question: what is the role of art in the face of unthinkable tragedy? Kirsten Kaschock has earned degrees from Yale University, the University of Iowa, Syracuse University, and the University of Georgia. The author of two collections of poetry, Unfathoms and A Beautiful Name for a Girl, she resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she is currently a doctoral fellow in dance at Temple University.
