Book Synopsis On Pythagoreanism by : Gabriele Cornelli
Download or read book On Pythagoreanism written by Gabriele Cornelli and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the conference “On Pythagoreanism”, held in Brasilia in 2011, was to bring together leading scholars from all over the world to define the status quaestionis for the ever-increasing interest and research on Pythagoreanism in the 21st century. The papers included in this volume exemplify the variety of topics and approaches now being used to understand the polyhedral image of one of the most fascinating and long-lasting intellectual phenomena in Western history. Cornelli’s paper opens the volume by charting the course of Pythagorean studies over the past two centuries. The remaining contributions range chronologically from Pythagoras and the early Pythagoreans of the archaic period (6th-5th centuries BCE) through the classical, hellenistic and late antique periods, to the eighteenth century. Thematically they treat the connections of Pythagoreanism with Orphism and religion, with mathematics, metaphysics and epistemology and with politics and the Pythagorean way of life.

This book was released on 2022-09-14 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together researchers to analyse and describe the concept of happiness in its various appearances in the history of thought. They trace its journey from the very first writings in Greek literature and historiography, through early Greek philosophy, Classical, Hellenistic and Neoplatonic philosophers, 10th century Christian manuscript writings, early and late medieval mysticism to the medieval Hindu philosophy of liberation, early modern philosophy and contemporary positive psychology. As the volume shows, happiness appears in many forms, all connected with the human sense of approaching oneness with the world or with the divine.

Book Synopsis 'Greek' and 'Roman' in Latin Medical Texts by : Brigitte Maire
Download or read book 'Greek' and 'Roman' in Latin Medical Texts written by Brigitte Maire and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin medical texts transmit medical theories and practices that originated mainly in Greece. This interaction took place through juxtaposition, assimilation and transformation of ideas. 'Greek' and 'Roman' in Latin Medical Texts studies the ways in which this cultural interaction influenced the development of the medical profession and the growth of knowledge of human and animal bodies, and especially how it provided the foundations for innovations in the areas of anatomy, pathology and pharmacology, from the earliest Latin medical texts until well into the medieval world.
Book Synopsis Theophrastus of Eresus: Commentary Volume 9.1 by : Massimo Raffa
Download or read book Theophrastus of Eresus: Commentary Volume 9.1 written by Massimo Raffa and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many subjects on which Theophrastus wrote, music is one of the most fascinating, as is testified by the sources discussed in this volume. Although scanty, the material we have—sixteen texts altogether, most of which are indirect testimonies—gives an idea of the originality and modernity of Theophrastus’ thought on music, and makes us regret that we do not know more. Our philosopher conceives of music as something that originates from a movement in the soul caused by passions and comes into existence through the body. Accordingly, he is interested in performance—i.e. the way in which musical expression is brought to the listener—and its effects on the soul and the body—e.g. musical therapy.
