She's successfully run her own dog training business for years, perfectly content with her beloved rescue pitbull as the main man in her life. She's given everything to her business, and her lack of social life (or slobber-free clothes) has been completely worth it. But all that changes when she meets Charlie Gill, the hottest client she's ever had. The only problem? Charlie's taken. Luckily, Cora has a new friend--the sweet, lovably geeky Eli Crawford. More loyal than a retriever, he's always there to help Cora with her problems, including her love life. That's why she's shocked to realize that even as things start heating up with Charlie, there might just be a more-than-friends spark between her and Eli, too. As Cora's life gets more tangled up than a dogwalker's leashes--and as she prepares to audition for a dog-training TV show that may irrevocably change her entire life--she has to figure things out before it all goes straight to the dogs."--

Book excerpt: The author makes it easy for you to create a tiny paper mache dog of your own. You only need a few basic tools and some materials that you may already have lying around the house. The only thing you may need to purchase is a few feet of aluminum wire for the armature -- or use some wire you alredy have on hand. First, choose a pattern from the 27 breeds included in the book. Then build your armature by bending the wires, using the pattern for a guide. This makes sure that your finished sculpture will have the right proportions for your breed. Add a few bits of crumpled aluminum foil to round out the forms, with the pattern guiding you, and then twist and bend your little dog into any position you desire. With these simple steps it's easy to create a lively original sculpture of your own design. When your armature is finished, the author shows you how to make the two layers of paper mache as smooth as you want it to be. You can add wrinkles, fur, happy mouths and other details after the paper mache is dry. If you would like to paint your dog, you can use the author's recipe for an inexpensive home-made gesso to add interesting textures. Then the author gives you suggestions for painting your sculpture, including an easy way to paint brindled spots, how to give an all-white dog an interesting coat, how to emphasize heavily-textured fur with acrylic glazing liquid, and more. The author is a well-known paper mache artist who has written several popular books on the subject. She also writes tutorials and creates videos for her blog, at UltimatePaperMache.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of surrealism and ghostliness, Katharine Conley provides a new, unifying theory of surrealist art and thought based on history and the paradigm of puns and anamorphosis. In Surrealist Ghostliness, Conley discusses surrealism as a movement haunted by the experience of World War I and the repressed ghost of spiritualism. From the perspective of surrealist automatism, this double haunting produced a unifying paradigm of textual and visual puns that both pervades surrealist thought and art and commemorates the surrealists’ response to the Freudian unconscious. Extending the gothic imagination inherited from the eighteenth century, the surrealists inaugurated the psychological century with an exploration of ghostliness through doubles, puns, and anamorphosis, revealing through visual activation the underlying coexistence of realities as opposed as life and death. Surrealist Ghostliness explores examples of surrealist ghostliness in film, photography, painting, sculpture, and installation art from the 1920s through the 1990s by artists from Europe and North America from the center to the periphery of the surrealist movement. Works by Man Ray, Claude Cahun, Brassaï and Salvador Dalí, Lee Miller, Dorothea Tanning, Francesca Woodman, Pierre Alechinsky, and Susan Hiller illuminate the surrealist ghostliness that pervades the twentieth-century arts and compellingly unifies the century’s most influential yet disparate avant-garde movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller “Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations. FROM THE PUBLISHER: Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to. FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book: Pictures Words Stories about things that happened to me Stories about things that happened to other people because of me Eight billion dollars* Stories about dogs The secret to eternal happiness* *These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Art is continually haunted by the animal', wrote Deleuze and Guattari. Over the past two decades, animals have quite literally invaded the gallery space, from Joseph Beuys' co-habiting with a coyote, Janis Kounelli's instillation of live horses, Damien Hirst's shark in formaldehyde to Mark Dion's natural history displays and Marco Evaristti's 'goldfish in a blender'. In this latest addition to the highly acclaimed 'Art and...' series, Giovanni Aloi surveys the insistent presence of animals in the world of contemporary art, exploring the leading concepts which inform this emerging practice. From exhibitions featuring live animals, to taxidermy, and interspecies communication, Giovanni Aloi explores how animals feature in modern art with a range of thought-provoking and innovative visual representations. Art and Animals challenges ideas of identity, 'otherness' and civilisation by explaining the role animals have occupied in our cultural development and illustrating their presence in the visual arts today.
