Book excerpt: This practical book contains 10 interventions a facilitator can use to help a team to develop a strategy at divisional, business unit or functional level. These interventions can be used in both online and physical meetings. The interventions will help a team to: Reflect on the journey their division has taken to date and the strengths that the team can use on the next phase of their journey. Uncover the paradigms that drive what currently happens in their division. Then develop new paradigms that open up new possibilities and opportunities for the division. Develop a vision of the future organization within which the division will operate. Analyse what stakeholders expect from the division. Use trends to identify new opportunities for the division. Develop a scenario of the future environment within which the division will operate. Use their division's strengths to identify new opportunities. Develop a new identity for their division. Develop an extended vision for their division that shows what they will need to have in place to delight their future stakeholders. Identify the first steps to implement the divisional vision. As a leader of a division, business unit or function, you will need to develop a divisional strategy whenever: Your organization or group develops a new strategy which will now place additional demands on the area you control. You need to 'align' the strategy of your division, unit or function to the organization's strategy. You need to present a powerful strategy to your executive team or board of directors in order to get the budget your division needs. You have a number of departments reporting to you - each headed by a good leader. But the different departments are not supporting one another in the way they should. Customers of your division complain that it is difficult to get a problem solved that cuts across the different departments in your division. Your team complains that they are stressed. There are too many projects and initiatives. Priorities are unclear. In this book, we give you 10 tried and tested 'recipes' to help facilitate a strategy workshop at a divisional level. Like any good recipe we provide all the information you may need to successfully facilitate each intervention. This includes: The goal of the intervention. Who the intervention is for. The time required. The materials you will need. Instructions for a practical group activity. Instructions for getting feedback after the group activity. An explanation of why this intervention works. In this book, Ruth Tearle shares the practical interventions she has used successfully as a sought-after strategic planning consultant. These interventions are powerful because they help teams to develop a strategy that provides focus for the division, aligns to the corporate strategy, and delights the stakeholders of the division. If you are a leader of a division or business unit, a strategist, an Organizational Development facilitator, or a Human Resources business partner, then this is a book to keep in your professional toolkit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Shows how humans have brought us to the brink and how humanity can find solutions. I urge people to read with humility and the daring to act.” —Harpal Singh, former Chair, Save the Children, India, and former Vice Chair, Save the Children International In conversations with people all over the world, from government officials and business leaders to taxi drivers and schoolteachers, Blair Sheppard, global leader for strategy and leadership at PwC, discovered they all had surprisingly similar concerns. In this prescient and pragmatic book, he and his team sum up these concerns in what they call the ADAPT framework: Asymmetry of wealth; Disruption wrought by the unexpected and often problematic consequences of technology; Age disparities--stresses caused by very young or very old populations in developed and emerging countries; Polarization as a symptom of the breakdown in global and national consensus; and loss of Trust in the institutions that underpin and stabilize society. These concerns are in turn precipitating four crises: a crisis of prosperity, a crisis of technology, a crisis of institutional legitimacy, and a crisis of leadership. Sheppard and his team analyze the complex roots of these crises--but they also offer solutions, albeit often seemingly counterintuitive ones. For example, in an era of globalization, we need to place a much greater emphasis on developing self-sustaining local economies. And as technology permeates our lives, we need computer scientists and engineers conversant with sociology and psychology and poets who can code. The authors argue persuasively that we have only a decade to make headway on these problems. But if we tackle them now, thoughtfully, imaginatively, creatively, and energetically, in ten years we could be looking at a dawn instead of darkness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of management is in crisis - the old remedies no longer work and organizations are failing at an increasing rate. Although many talk of 'joined up thinking', few offer practical guidance on how to achieve this in organizations. The Fractal Organization sets down the practical implications of a well tested systemic approach to building organizations that are capable of surviving and flourishing in these turbulent times. "An excellent read…Many organizations fail at the mercy of their own ignorance. The author has done an excellent job in making ‘the science of effective organization’ accessible to management, providing them with a new knowledge to deal with the uncertainties that the markets place upon them." Stephen J. Brewis, Business Architect, British Telecom "...one of the most interesting, thorough and rigorous guides to management that I have ever read, … introduces new insights in every chapter… carries a credibility which acts as a counterbalance to the sometimes difficult message which he conveys which is that a lot of mainstream management practice is at best ineffective and at worst downright destructive. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in management or systems thinking." Penny Marrington, Course Chair, Systems Group, Open University "In my opinion this book manages to present sound academic theory that is relevant and helpful to the practitioner in the business. I experienced several A-HA moments." Pauline Marsh, Strategy Director, CS&S International, BAE SYSTEMS "The insights of the Viable System Model have been open only to a select few for much too long. Hoverstadt has gone furthest in bringing these ideas to a wider audience…Management books have too often been serious but not practical, or practical but not serious. This book is both brilliantly serious and practical, and often entertaining too." Professor Peter Kawalak, Manchester Business School "Integrates mainstream management ideas with the systems ideas underpinning the VSM, and flows and reads well. As a starting point for developing understanding of the VSM in today's world this book improves greatly on all books that have gone before, I would certainly recommend it to colleagues, clients, and students." Dr. Robin Asby, Course Chair, Communication and Systems, Open University

Managing for Change addresses the key operational issues facing NGO managers, drawing lessons from the reality of southern NGOs. It explores areas such as the formation of strategy, effective NGO leadership, the handling of donor relations, staff motivation and development, and the management styles most appropriate to crises and change.

Book excerpt: Internal Pricing surveys of the transfer pricing literature with a focus on commonly-used pricing schemes using incomplete contracting models. Chapter 2 develops the basic symmetric information model to compare the performance of cost-based and negotiated pricing in the absence of external input markets. Chapter 3 considers market-based pricing and the role of internal price adjustments; it ignores investments and focuses solely on trading incentives. Chapter 4 adds investments to the model of Chapter 3 and shows that investment opportunities further strengthen the case for internal adjustments. Chapter 5 reconsiders the initial analysis of Chapter 2 for the case of asymmetrically informed divisional managers. The book ends with the author's conclusions and an appendix including the mathematical proofs. A key theme running through Internal Pricing is that the firm's central office (i.e headquarters) plays a rather limited role in mediating individual transactions. This captures the stylized empirical fact that in most firms, headquarters designs the broad "rules of the game" by choosing a pricing mechanism and compensation contracts, but usually does not get involved in pricing on a product-by-product basis.
