Book excerpt: Zero has been axial in human development, but the origin and discovery of zero has never been satisfactorily addressed by a comprehensive, systematic and above all interdisciplinary research program. In this volume, over 40 international scholars explore zero under four broad themes: history; religion, philosophy & linguistics; arts; and mathematics & the sciences. Some propose that the invention/discovery of zero may have been facilitated by the prior evolution of a sophisticated concept of Nothingness or Emptiness (as it is understood in non-European traditions); and conversely, inhibited by the absence of, or aversion to, such a concept of Nothingness in the West. But not all scholars agree. Join the debate.

Book excerpt: The common sense on the division by zero with the long and mysterious history is wrong and our basic idea on the space around the point at infinity is also wrong since Euclid. On the gradient or on differential coefficients we have a great missing since tan(π/2) = 0. Our mathematics is also wrong in elementary mathematics on the division by zero. In this book in a new and definite sense, we will show and give various applications of the division by zero 0/0 = 1/0 = z/0 = 0. In particular, we will introduce several fundamental concepts in calculus, Euclidean geometry, analytic geometry, complex analysis and differential equations. We will see new properties on the Laurent expansion, singularity, derivative, extension of solutions of differential equations beyond analytical and isolated singularities, and reduction problems of differential equations. On Euclidean geometry and analytic geometry, we will find new fields by the concept of the division by zero. We will collect many concrete properties in mathematical sciences from the viewpoint of the division by zero. We will know that the division by zero is our elementary and fundamental mathematics.

Book excerpt: This book presents a systematic, comprehensive treatment of analog and discrete signal analysis and synthesis and an introduction to analog communication theory. This evolved from my 40 years of teaching at Oklahoma State University (OSU). It is based on three courses, Signal Analysis (a second semester junior level course), Active Filters (a first semester senior level course), and Digital signal processing (a second semester senior level course). I have taught these courses a number of times using this material along with existing texts. The references for the books and journals (over 160 references) are listed in the bibliography section. At the undergraduate level, most signal analysis courses do not require probability theory. Only, a very small portion of this topic is included here. I emphasized the basics in the book with simple mathematics and the soph- tication is minimal. Theorem-proof type of material is not emphasized. The book uses the following model: 1. Learn basics 2. Check the work using bench marks 3. Use software to see if the results are accurate The book provides detailed examples (over 400) with applications. A thr- number system is used consisting of chapter number – section number – example or problem number, thus allowing the student to quickly identify the related material in the appropriate section of the book. The book includes well over 400 homework problems. Problem numbers are identified using the above three-number system.

Book excerpt: About the fifth century BC, three civilizations independently and simultaneously began to philosophize about nothing: China (chapter 3), India (chapters 4 and 5), and Greece (chapters 6-10). They had previously focused on what is the case. Light poured on nature, architecture, and society. But then, in a cross-civilizational black-out, emerged disparate nay-sayers who shifted attention to what is not the case. Behold, the holes in a sponge are absences of sponge! Holes are what make the sponge useful for absorbing liquid. The sponge can exist without the holes. But the holes cannot "exist" without the sponge. They are parasites that depend on their host. Yet the two get along well. Without holes, there would not be so many sponges in your house. Your shadow is a more complex parasite. It is a hole you bore into the light. Your shadow depends on both you and the light. You and light are rather mysterious. Your shadow partakes of both mysteries. .

Book excerpt: When Julie Miller began writing her successful developmental math series, one of her primary goals was to bridge the gap between preparatory courses and college algebra. For thousands of students, the Miller/OËNeill/Hyde (or M/O/H) series has provided a solid foundation in developmental mathematics. With the Miller College Algebra series, Julie has carried forward her clear, concise writing style; highly effective pedagogical features; and complete author-created technological package to students in this course area. The main objectives of the college algebra series are three-fold: Ë Provide students with a clear and logical presentation of the basic concepts that will prepare them for continued study in mathematics. Ë Help students develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills that will benefit them in all aspects of life. Ë Motivate students by demonstrating the significance of mathematics in their lives through practical applications.

Book excerpt: Based on a series of lectures for adult students, this lively and entertaining book proves that, far from being a dusty, dull subject, geometry is in fact full of beauty and fascination. The author's infectious enthusiasm is put to use in explaining many of the key concepts in the field, starting with the Golden Number and taking the reader on a geometrical journey via Shapes and Solids, through the Fourth Dimension, finishing up with Einstein's Theories of Relativity. Equally suitable as a gift for a youngster or as a nostalgic journey back into the world of mathematics for older readers, John Barnes' book is the perfect antidote for anyone whose maths lessons at school are a source of painful memories. Where once geometry was a source of confusion and frustration, Barnes brings enlightenment and entertainment. In this second edition, stimulated by recent lectures at Oxford, further material and extra illustrations have been added on many topics including Coloured Cubes, Chaos and Crystals.

Book excerpt: Calculus Set Free: Infinitesimals to the Rescue is a single-variable calculus textbook that incorporates the use of infinitesimal methods. The procedures used throughout make many of the calculations simpler and the concepts clearer for undergraduate students, heightening success and easing a significant burden of entry into STEM disciplines. This text features a student-friendly exposition with ample marginal notes, examples, illustrations, and more. The exercises include a wide range of difficulty levels, stretching from very simple rapid response questions to the occasional exercise meant to test knowledge. While some exercises require the use of technology to work through, none are dependent on any specific software. The answers to odd-numbered exercises in the back of the book include both simplified and non-simplified answers, hints, or alternative answers. Throughout the text, notes in the margins include comments meant to supplement understanding, sometimes including line-by-line commentary for worked examples. Without sacrificing academic rigor, Calculus Set Free offers an engaging style that helps students to solidify their understanding on difficult theoretical calculus.

This book uses history, puzzles, and lively debates to demonstrate how it is possible to devise new artificial systems of mathematical rules. It contends that departures from traditional rules can even be the basis for new applications.
