Book excerpt: For as long as man has contemplated the origin of the universe and the life within it, the search for answers has led some to religion in pursuit of a Creator, and others believe that science, especially Darwinian natural selection has all the answers. Divine Evolution represents the author's attempt to reconcile the creationism account found in Genesis with the wealth of scientific evidence to explain life without supernaturally directed influence. Not confined purely to religious writings or scientific textbooks, this book explores contemporary scientific evidence in support of evolution and the religious, spiritual, psychological and personal sources of information that might provide answers to the great existential questions of "Who am I?" and "How did I get here?"Both atheists and religious people alike seek the answers to these questions. Rather than limiting the scope of the search to purely religious or purely secular sources, Divine Evolution presents an intriguing new perspective rationally developed after evaluating the physical evidence found in the fossil record, and more importantly what that evidence means. It also explores the psychological perspective of religious beliefs, and to see if any evidence exists in support for the supernatural.

Book Synopsis Darwin, Dharma, and the Divine by : G. Clinton Godart
Download or read book Darwin, Dharma, and the Divine written by G. Clinton Godart and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darwin, Dharma, and the Divine is the first book in English on the history of evolutionary theory in Japan. Bringing to life more than a century of ideas, G. Clinton Godart examines how and why Japanese intellectuals, religious thinkers of different faiths, philosophers, biologists, journalists, activists, and ideologues engaged with evolutionary theory and religion. How did Japanese religiously think about evolution? What were their main concerns? Did they reject evolution on religious grounds, or—as was more often the case—how did they combine evolutionary theory with their religious beliefs? Evolutionary theory was controversial and never passively accepted in Japan: It took a hundred years of appropriating, translating, thinking, and debating to reconsider the natural world and the relation between nature, science, and the sacred in light of evolutionary theory. Since its introduction in the nineteenth century, Japanese intellectuals—including Buddhist, Shinto, Confucian, and Christian thinkers—in their own ways and often with opposing agendas, struggled to formulate a meaningful worldview after Darwin. In the decades that followed, as the Japanese redefined their relation to nature and built a modern nation-state, the debates on evolutionary theory intensified and state ideologues grew increasingly hostile toward its principles. Throughout the religious reception of evolution was dominated by a long-held fear of the idea of nature and society as cold and materialist, governed by the mindless “struggle for survival.” This aversion endeavored many religious thinkers, philosophers, and biologists to find goodness and the divine within nature and evolution. It was this drive, argues Godart, that shaped much of Japan’s modern intellectual history and changed Japanese understandings of nature, society, and the sacred. Darwin, Dharma, and the Divine will contribute significantly to two of the most debated topics in the history of evolutionary theory: religion and the political legacy of evolution. It will, therefore, appeal to the broad audience interested in Darwin studies as well as students and scholars of Japanese intellectual history, religion, and philosophy.

Book Synopsis Divine Imperfection by : L. Appel Jr.
Download or read book Divine Imperfection written by L. Appel Jr. and published by XinXii. This book was released on 2022-02-25 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The root of human dilemmas, although they always present themselves in multiple hues, invariably plunges into the question of human dualism, consciousness and matter. There's a subtle cosmic Darwinism going on that we haven't paid attention to yet. A real universal filter is at work, silently decimating intelligent biological species across the Universe. From our animal matrix either this subtle “something” that we decide to identify as “consciousness” will emerge, or our bodily instincts will inevitably lead us to nuclear suicide. The "Fermi paradox" suggests this possibility explicitly. The human mind, this highly efficient and complex biological software, emerged from this same Darwinian process of violent and brutal struggle for survival. So, the mind also naturally tends to aggression and violence when dissociated from consciousness, that “energy” that many decided to call pejoratively as “the ghost in the machine”. The human world in general expresses precisely such “reality” created by the mind, when dissociated from consciousness. Hence our inclination towards indifference and aggression. Our animal instincts are still highly active, determining our every move. So, the nuclear age effectively corresponds to the turning point of intelligent species. Every day we seem to take a step forward towards "defcon 1", the threat of imminent nuclear destruction. The existence of the doomsday clock is known only to a few. Atomic weapons are not "peace insurers" by the certainty of mutual assured destruction (M.A.D.). This is a truly insane perspective that exposes us in our ravings, making it more than clear that we have deviated from our natural evolutionary course. However, if we implode ourselves, it will only show that we never had what it takes to persevere as a conscious biological species. The Universe, however, will lose nothing. It is it's simple and natural way of functioning. The Parable of the Sower reminds us of this reality.
