Il peut y avoir de grandes différences sur la réglementation des essais cliniques (autorité de santé, comité d'éthique), réglementation du travail, la réglementation douanière, la définition de l'éthique, du consentement éclairé, le rapport au temps et à la planification, la gestion de l'urgence. Un essai clinique ne peut être conduit que si les droits, la sécurité, la dignité et le bien-être des participants sont protégés et priment sur tout autre intérêt ; et s'il a pour but de produire des données fiables et robustes. Une bonne connaissance du pays, de ses us et coutumes et de sa réglementation relative aux essais cliniques est importante afin d'éviter tout retard dans la mise en place de la recherche, mais aussi afin d'éviter toute situation éthiquement ou culturellement immorale. Il est important de noter que le succès thérapeutique dépend non seulement de donner l'agent thérapeutique correct au patient mais aussi les informations appropriées pour l'utiliser avec succès ; c'est dans cette étape qu'intervient le pharmacien et le médecin qui ont un rôle clef dans la réussite thérapeutique.
