Book excerpt: This study was designed to identify and characterize areas of concentrated use and diving behavior of blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) off the California coast. During the summer of 2004, thirteen blue whales were tagged with implantable Telonics ST-15 Argos satellite-monitored radio tags and five were tagged with Telonics ST-21 Argos satellite-monitored depth of dive tags. Tag duration averaged 100 d with a total of 2159 locations recorded. Whales generally remained near the continental slope and were most often found at the west end of the Santa Barbara Channel, near the Gulf of the Farallones, or between Cape Mendocino and Cape Blanco. Analysis of the 95% kernel density distributions of whale locations showed a one degree increase in sea surface temperature (SST) was correlated with a decrease in whale density by 7% (p

Book excerpt: The western North Atlantic population of the northern right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) was severely depleted by whaling over the last century. Despite over fifty years of protection, fewer than four hundred individuals are believed to exist in the North Atlantic. Relatively little is known about the diving behavior, respiratory physiology, or diel activity of these whales, although such information could be useful in predicting population abundance and distribution in relation to food or environmental variables. Dive behavior data can be collected visually, but collection is limited to daylight hours, calm weather, and fortuitous encounters with study animals. Satellite-monitored radio tags offer the opportunity to collect data on individual whales' diving behavior continuously, over long distances and periods of time, and at relatively low cost. Thirteen North Atlantic right whales were tagged and monitored in the Gulf of Maine between 1989 and 1991. One male was tagged in 1989; two adult males, six adult females (two with calves) and one juvenile were tagged in 1990; one adult female (with a calf) and two juveniles were tagged in 1991. The duration of monitoring for the whales varied from

Blue whale calls were recorded off the coast of California in fall, 1993 and measured for frequency and time characteristics. On average, blue whale calls lasted 16 s, swept down from 18.9 to 17.3 Hz and were repeated every 38 s. These results are similar to blue whale calls recorded elsewhere in that they possess a frequency downsweep component which lasts from 16-18 s. Ambient noise levels in the ocean due to sources such as wind, waves or shipping can make it difficult to detect blue whale calls in raw hydrophone data. The characteristics of the blue whale calls recorded in the field were sufficiently similar to design a matched filter (kernel) to automatically detect calls obscured by ambient noise. This filter worked well at identifying blue whale calls when applied to the data from which it was derived and on data from the U.S. Navy's SOSUS (SOund SUrveillance System) array. The U.S. Navy has been monitoring low-frequency sounds in the northeast Pacific using bottom-mounted hydrophone arrays since the mid- 1950's. The use of this system was extended to the study of low-frequency whale calls. By applying the matched filter developed from field data to each of three hydrophone arrays and using location algorithms developed for seismic work, it was possible to pick the same call on each array and determine its location by examining the arrival time differences at each hydrophone and comparing this to a predefined location. To confirm the validity of these locations, a ground-truthing experiment was conducted whereby a Navy P-3 aircraft was given locations determined with the matched filter to try to visually and/or acoustically locate blue whales off the Oregon coast. Other locations were determined for 10 days in July and August, 1994.

Book excerpt: The acoustic repertoire of the Northeast Pacific population of blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) consists of three different sounds: A, B, and D calls. The pulsed A and tonal B calls can be produced singularly or in phrases or songs, while downswept D calls are only produced as singular calls. Although these sounds have been well described, the behavioral context of sound production is poorly understood. To investigate spatial and temporal variability in blue whale call and song usage off southern California, passive acoustic data collected from four High-Frequency Acoustic Recording Packages (HARPs) were analyzed. The acoustic and dive profile data collected through tags deployed on blue whales were also analyzed to describe the behavioral context of sound production. Singular call and phrase production rates were calculated to assess variability in sound type abundances on different spatial, temporal and behavioral scales. Distinct differences in song type preference were apparent, with offshore sites featuring songs comprised of multiple sequential B units following a single A, while inshore, A and B units alternated. Most blue whale sounds were produced during the summer and fall. The majority of all sounds produced by tagged blue whales occurred during non-lunging dives at shallow depths (less than 30 m). Song production was associated with shallow, non-lunging dives, while singular calls often occurred during lunging dives or bouts of surface behavior. The observed differences in blue whale acoustic behavior off southern California will aid in the development of context specific rates for future models of density estimation.

Book excerpt: Blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus Linnaeus) eat almost exclusively euphausiids and must find dense aggregations above the local mean to satisfy their energetic needs. The paradox implied by the predator-prey relationship between these large baleen whales and euphausiids is how the whales can acquire sufficient food from such small, patchily distributed prey. This problem can be conceptualized as interactions on multiple spatial scales. Through analysis of the euphausiid mandible remains in whale fecal samples, I determined that the prey of blue whales from the northeast Pacific population is consistently and overwhelmingly dominated by Thysanoessa spinifera Holmes, a large neritic euphausiid. Based on the blue whales' extremely limited diet, I hypothesized that blue whales and T. spinifera would be consistently co-located across a range of spatial scales. I investigated the spatial relationship between the predator and prey at multiple spatial scales: the North Pacific Ocean, the California Current System, a regional scale where there is long-term sampling by the CalCOFI program, and a local scale near blue whale aggregation centers. The distributions of blue whales and T. spinifera were only related at the two largest scales investigated. An apparent northward blue whale range expansion beginning around 1997 did not appear to be related to reductions in T. spinifera prey in more southern waters. As sampled, the regional and local scales did not capture the scale of interaction between these predators and prey, suggesting that a smaller scale of sampling was necessary closer to the ambit of a foraging whale. Focusing on a single bathymetric feature (Nine Mile Bank near San Diego, California) I tested the hypothesis that both prey euphausiids and baleen whales aggregate at such abrupt changes in topography. Instead of serving as a point of increased relative abundance, the bank actually represented an offshore limit for blue, fin, and humpback whales feeding on T. spinifera. T. spinifera adults were found deeper in the water than less energetically valuable smaller individuals. The results of this dissertation suggest that blue whales are highly selective predators that can locate and feed on vertical aggregations of T. spinifera located near steep topography.

Book excerpt: Calls of blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus), fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus), and humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) were identified in the data from U.S. Navy Sound Surveilance System (SOSUS) and other hydrophone arrays. These data on calling whales from November 1995 through July 1999 have been listed here for four offshore, deep-water Regions along continental margins of the North and Northeast Pacific. The occurrence of calling whales was monitored during two-day periods each week. Call data recorded from each array identified species, call occurrence, variation, received beam, and relative numbers of calling whales. This allowed assessment of seasonal distribution of calls for the different species, and provided locations for sources received at multiple arrays. Blue whale tonal sounds were distributed widely, received most in the NW Region, with a peak in occurrence in the fall. Fin whale "20-Hz" repetitive pulse sequences were received from whales grouped in local areas in all Regions, with a peak in occurrence in midwinter. Humpback songs were received from December through May particularly in the SE Region. The offshore listening systems allowed basin-wide monitoring of the seasonal distribution of these callng whales.

Book excerpt: Passive acoustic monitoring is increasingly used by the scientific community to study, survey and census marine mammals, especially cetaceans, many of which are easier to hear than to see. PAM is also used to support efforts to mitigate potential negative effects of human activities such as ship traffic, military and civilian sonar and offshore exploration. Walter Zimmer provides an integrated approach to PAM, combining physical principles, discussion of technical tools and application-oriented concepts of operations. Additionally, relevant information and tools necessary to assess existing and future PAM systems are presented, with Matlab code used to generate figures and results so readers can reproduce data and modify code to analyse the impact of changes. This allows the principles to be studied whilst discovering potential difficulties and side effects. Aimed at graduate students and researchers, the book provides all information and tools necessary to gain a comprehensive understanding of this interdisciplinary subject.
