Book excerpt: Satellite-linked dive-recording instruments were deployed on four eastern Arctic bowhead whales. Two of the tagged animals were sexually mature females accompanied by calves. The other two animals were inferred to be an adult male and a juvenile female. Dive measurement data was received between July 5 and August 11, 2003. Tags reported data for 17-34 days for a total of 96 tag-days. Differences between whales were evident for surface time and certain dive characteristics; females accompanied by calves had the lowest mean dive duration and spent more time at the surface than the other whales. No differences in surface time or dive characteristics were observed for time-of-day. Adjustments to sightability estimates for application to aerial surveys of bowhead whales in the eastern Arctic are discussed.

Book excerpt: We used satellite telemetry to examine bowhead whale movement behavior, residence times, and dive behavior in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea, 2006 – 18. We explored the timing and duration of use of three subregions (western, central, eastern) within the Alaskan Beaufort Sea and applied a two-state switching state-space model to infer bowhead whale behavior state as either transiting or lingering. Transiting whales made direct movements whereas lingering whales changed direction frequently and were presumably feeding. In spring, whales migrated across the Alaskan Beaufort Sea in 7.17 ± 0.41 days, primarily off the continental shelf over deep water. During the autumn migration, whales spent over twice as much time crossing the Alaskan Beaufort Sea than in spring, averaging 18.66 ± 2.30 days, spending 10.05 ± 1.22 days in the western subregion near Point Barrow. Most whales remained on the shelf during the autumn migration and frequently dove to the seafloor, where they spent 45% of their time regardless of behavioral state. Consistent dive behavior in autumn suggests that the whales were looking for food while migrating, and the identification of lingering locations likely reflects feeding. The lack of lingering locations in the eastern and central subregions suggests that prey densities are rarely sufficient to warrant whales pausing their migration for multiple days, unlike in the western subregion near Point Barrow, where bowhead whales regularly lingered for long periods of time.

Book excerpt: Bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) are managed as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act due to depletion by commercial whaling during the late 1800s. Bowheads are an important subsistence and cultural resource for coastal people of northern Alaska. Until recently, the entire Bering-Chukchi-Beaufort stock was thought to migrate through the Beaufort Sea twice annually: during their eastward, spring migration and their westward, fall migration. Recent summer sightings indicate some bowheads may stay in the Bering and Chukchi Seas and not enter the Beaufort at all. The importance of the Beaufort Sea for feeding is also in question due to conflicting study results.

Book excerpt: The following report contains detailed information on the movement patterns of beluga whales that were satellite-tagged in 1999 and 2000 in Cook Inlet, Alaska. The seasonal movements and dive patterns of three whales CI-9901, CI-0001, and CI-0002 were analyzed, and movement data from the whales tagged in 2000 were referenced to in a subsequent paper by Hobbs et al. (2005). However, the detailed analyses of diving behavior and movement patterns of these individual whales were never made available until now. The seasonal movements and dive patterns of three belugas in Cook Inlet, Alaska, were monitored between June and January 1999-2000 using satellite telemetry. One adult male whale was tagged on 30 May 1999 and tracked until 16 September 1999 (109 days), and one juvenile female and one adult male were tagged on 13 September 2000 and tracked until 2 (115 days) and 18 January 2001 (124 days), respectively. Whales remained in the inlet the entire time they were tracked. Mean dive depths across the entire tracking period ranged from 2.6 m (SD = 5.2) to 5.2 m (SD = 8.8). Mean dive durations ranged from 1.4 minutes (SD = 2.0) to 3.1 minutes (SD = 4.1). Overall mean time at surface (between 0 and 1 m) ranged from 23% to 70% and appeared to be related to season and location. Behavioral periods were identified for each whale (4-60 days) based on stationary movements in a particular part of the inlet and unique diving behavior during that time. Significant differences were found between diving behavior and tidal rate of change and direction, as well as whale location and average sea-ice concentration. Belugas in Cook Inlet display seasonal variation in dive behavior and movement patterns, both of which have implications for sightings rates, correction factors, and abundance estimates obtained for the population. Book excerpt: The western North Atlantic population of the northern right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) was severely depleted by whaling over the last century. Despite over fifty years of protection, fewer than four hundred individuals are believed to exist in the North Atlantic. Relatively little is known about the diving behavior, respiratory physiology, or diel activity of these whales, although such information could be useful in predicting population abundance and distribution in relation to food or environmental variables. Dive behavior data can be collected visually, but collection is limited to daylight hours, calm weather, and fortuitous encounters with study animals. Satellite-monitored radio tags offer the opportunity to collect data on individual whales' diving behavior continuously, over long distances and periods of time, and at relatively low cost. Thirteen North Atlantic right whales were tagged and monitored in the Gulf of Maine between 1989 and 1991. One male was tagged in 1989; two adult males, six adult females (two with calves) and one juvenile were tagged in 1990; one adult female (with a calf) and two juveniles were tagged in 1991. The duration of monitoring for the whales varied from

Book excerpt: This dissertation has been prepared in manuscript format and contains four individual papers. Each paper/chapter is formatted for the journal to which it has been, or will be, submitted. In the first manuscript, “From Whaling to Tagging: The evolution of knowledge regarding humpback whales in their North Atlantic breeding grounds”, I describe the evolution of humpback whale research from the days of Yankee whaling to the most recent satellite telemetry project in the West Indies breeding grounds. The humpback whales that over-winter in the West Indies are part of one of the most heavily studied whale populations in the world; projects conducted in this area have served as models for humpback whale research world-wide. This manuscript will be submitted for publication in Mammal Review in 2014. In my second manuscript, “Local and migratory movements of humpback whales satellite tracked in the North Atlantic Ocean”, I report the results of a satellite telemetry project that was conducted in the winters of 2008 through 2012 in the breeding areas of Silver Bank (Dominican Republic) and Guadeloupe (French West Indies). The results from this project add a level of detail to the current knowledge about North Atlantic humpback whale habitat use, migration, and population structure that could not be obtained without current satellite tagging technology. This paper has been reviewed and accepted for publication by the Canadian Journal of Zoology and will be published by November, 2013 ii In my third manuscript, “Individual variation in movements of humpback whales satellite tracked in the eastern Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea”, I report the results from a satellite telemetry project conducted off Dutch Harbor, (Alaska, USA) in the summers of 2007 through 2011. Satellite telemetry from this project showed the fine-scale use of foraging habitat in a North Pacific feeding ground. Additionally, a long-distance, within-season travel event was recorded in 2010, prompting speculation about the humpback population structure throughout the Bering Sea. This manuscript has been reviewed and accepted for publication by Endangered Species Research and will be published by November, 2013. In the fourth manuscript, “Assessing implantable satellite tag extrusion using light sensors”, I report the results of a novel approach for remotely quantifying tag rejection; the use of tag-mounted light sensors to indicate extrusion rate. The data for this paper were collected during a 2011 follow-up study aimed at assessing the behavioral and physiological responses of Gulf of Maine humpback whales to current tagging methods. Tag diagnostic technology like this, while still being developed, could significantly improve future telemetry work by updating tag design and placement methods to increase overall project efficiency. This paper has been accepted as a poster presentation at the 20th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals (December 2013, Dunedin New Zealand). It will be updated with the results from the 2013 Gulf of Maine tagging field season and submitted to a peer reviewed journal in 2014.
