A number of surveys have been conducted at breeding colonies in recent years to estimate population size and trends. Summarizing the available data, we estimate that approximately 38 000 pairs of Razorbills currently breed in eastern North America. The largest concentrations of Razorbills breed on the Quebec North Shore and in coastal southern Labrador; smaller numbers breed in the Quebec portion of the gulf and estuary of the St. Lawrence River, Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and St. Pierre and Miquelon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ducks, Geese, and Swans of North America has been hailed as a classic since the first edition was published in 1942. A must-have for professional biologists, birders, waterfowl hunters, decoy collectors, and wildlife managers, this fully revised and updated edition provides definitive information on the continent's forty-six species. Maps of both winter and breeding ranges are presented with images by top waterfowl photographers and the acclaimed original artwork of Robert W. (Bob) Hines. Originally authored by F. H. Kortright and later revised by Frank Bellrose, this latest edition, which has been meticulously updated by renowned waterfowl biologist Guy Baldassarre, continues the legacy of esteemed authors. Each species account contains in-depth sections on: - identification - distribution - migration behavior - habitat - population status - breeding biology - rearing of young - recruitment and survival - food habits and feeding ecology - molts and plumages - conservation and management To facilitate identification, the species accounts also include detailed illustrations of wings. An appendix contains comparative illustrations of ducklings, goslings, and cygnets. Guy Baldassarre has hit the target. His remake of the Kortright/Bellrose classic provides good biological descriptions, wonderful photographs and illustrations, and easy-to-understand information about waterfowl. I would encourage every hunter and enthusiast to have these books as an educational guide to waterfowl and their needs.--H. Dale Hall, CEO, Ducks Unlimited, Inc. When, as an eleven-year-old in 1942, I read F. H. Kortright's first edition of this book, it altered the trajectory of my life. Every subsequent edition, including this latest update by Guy Baldassarre, has improved the landmark reference. I can't imagine that anyone interested in waterfowl or wetlands can live without this indispensable book.--Paul A. Johnsgard, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Creating a brand-new version of such a timeless and previously revised classic is a risky venture indeed, but nobody could be better suited for this monumental task than Guy Baldassarre. He has created a stunning new classic, at once magnificent in its visual appeal and truly comprehensive in its scientific breadth and depth. Hats off to Guy for dedicating himself to this project with such obvious passion, patience, and skill. This book absolutely belongs on the shelf or coffee table of anyone who has ever marveled at waterfowl, whether through their binoculars or from inside the duck blind.--John W. Fitzpatrick, Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology Guy Baldassarre was a professor of wildlife ecology at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse until his death in 2012. He is the coauthor of the textbook, Waterfowl Ecology and Management. Book excerpt: The eight currently recognized species of North American geese are part of a familiar group of birds collectively called waterfowl, all of which are smaller than swans and generally larger than ducks. They include the most popular of our aquatic gamebirds, with several million shot each year by sport hunters. Our two most abundant waterfowl, the Canada goose and snow goose, have populations collectively totaling about 15 million individuals. Like swans, the lifelong pairbonding of geese, their familial care, and prolonged social attachment to their offspring are legendary. Their seasonal migratory flights sometimes span thousands of miles, and the sight of their long, wavering flight formations are as much the symbols of seasonal change as are the spring songs of cardinals or the appearance of autumnal leaf colors. This book describes each species' geographic range and subspecies, its identification traits, weights and measurements, and criteria for its age and sex determination. Ecological and behavioral information includes each species' breeding and wintering habitats, its foods and foraging behavior, its local and long distance movements, and its relationships with other species. Reproductive information includes each species' age of maturity, pair-bond pattern, pair-forming behaviors, usual clutch sizes and incubation periods, brooding behavior, and postbreeding behavior. Mortality sources and rates of egg, young, and adult losses are also summarized, and each species' past and current North American populations are estimated. In addition to a text of nearly 60,000 words, the book includes 8 maps, 21 line drawings, and 28 photographs by the author, as well as more than 700 literature citations.

This was about twice as many geese as was reported nesting there in the 1980s, and we estimated that the nesting population grew by 4.2% per year from 1953 to 1998"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The Northern Highlands of Mexico is an increasingly important wintering area for populations of Lesser Snow Geese and Ross" Geese that nest in the Western and Central Canadian Arctic. In Mexico, the growing importance of the Northern Highlands as a wintering area for Ross" Geese and the western Central Flyway population of Lesser Snow Geese underscored the need to conduct field observations in that area and prompted the development of a joint effort involving the Mexican Secretaria de Desarrolla Social, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Canadian Wildlife Service. Some of the objectives were: estimate the number of white geese on the principal wintering areas in the states of Durango and Chihuahua, determine the breeding ground origin of Lesser Snow Goose stocks overwinterin in Mexico, determint ehe incidence and number of Ross' Geese among flocks of white geese, assess the quality and security of white goose wintering habitat, and identify wetland habitats of critical importance to waterfowl.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regular surveys of Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) colonies in Quebec, conducted between 1977 and 2001, resulted in the discovery of 705 colonies, mostly in the western part of the province. While single breeding pairs were occasionally found (9% of Quebec "heronries"), the colonies were generally composed of fewer than 16 breeding pairs, with sometimes over 50 (18 known colonies), as was the case on several islands in the St. Lawrence River. Close to one-third (1919 of the 6481 active nests) of the Quebec Great Blue Heron population was associated with heronries in the St. Lawrence system. Half of the St. Lawrence heronries that were active during two adjacent survey periods (1975-1983 and 1984-1990, or 1984-1990 and 1991-2001) increased in size between periods, while one-third of the colonies decreased in size. One-sixth of the colonies remained the same size during the study period. Great Blue Herons periodically abandon their colonies and settle elsewhere. Our data show that 50% of known Quebec colonies (n = 377 colonies visited more than once) were abandoned after being discovered as active colonies, and, on average, all nests in colonies that are abandoned disappear 7 years after discovery of the colony. On the basis of thorough inventories conducted on the St. Lawrence, we found that all nest platforms in 14 of the 70 colony sites had disappeared in less than 25 years. Since 1977, when regular surveys began, 50-90% of breeding attempts have been successful, yielding an average of over 2.2 chicks per pair. This productivity rate suggests that the Quebec population of Great Blue Herons may be increasing and may explain the recent expansion in its range. Following our 25 years of investigation on the Great Blue Heron in the province, we estimate the current late-summer Great Blue Heron population of Quebec at some 27 000 individuals (6500 pairs producing 2.2 young per pair per year).--Publisher's description.
