Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation studies certain problems in distributed coding of correlated sources. The first problem considers the design of efficient coders in a robust distributed source coding scenario. Here, the information is encoded at independent terminals and transmitted across separate channels, any of which may fail. This scenario subsumes a wide range of source and source-channel coding/quantization problems, including multiple descriptions and the CEO problem. A global optimization algorithm based on deterministic annealing is proposed for the joint design of all the system components. The proposed approach avoids many poor local optima, is independent of initialization, and does not make any simplifying assumption on the underlying source distribution.

Achieving efficient, fault-tolerant realizations of very large, highly dynamic, complex, unconventional networks is a real challenge for abstract modelling, algorithmic design and analysis, but a solid foundational and theoretical background seems to be lacking. This book presents high-quality contributions by leading experts worldwide on the key algorithmic and complexity-theoretic aspects of wireless sensor networks. The intended audience includes researchers and graduate students working on sensor networks, and the broader areas of wireless networking and distributed computing, as well as practitioners in the relevant application areas. The book can also serve as a text for advanced courses and seminars.

Book excerpt: We consider the joint source-channel coding (JSCC) problem where the real valued outputs of two correlated memoryless Gaussian sources are scalar quantized, bit assigned, and transmitted, without applying any error correcting code, over a multiple access channel (MAC) which consists of two orthogonal point-to-point time-correlated Rayleigh fading sub-channels with soft-decision demodulation. At the receiver side, a joint sequence maximum a posteriori (MAP) detector is used to exploit the correlation between the two sources as well as the redundancy left in the quantizers' indices, the channel's soft-decision outputs, and noise memory. The MAC's sub-channels are modeled via non-binary Markov noise discrete channels recently shown to effectively represent point-to-point fading channels. Two scenarios are studied in this book. In the first scenario, the sources are memoryless and generated according to a bivariate Gaussian distribution with a given correlation parameter. In the second scenario, the sources have memory, captured by a changing correlation parameter which is governed by a two state first order Markov process.

Book excerpt: In this work we propose a new method for compressing multiple correlated sources with a very low-complexity encoder in the presence of side information. Our approach uses ideas from compressed sensing and distributed source coding. At the encoder, syndromes of the quantized compressively sensed sources are generated and transmitted. The decoder uses side information to predict the compressed sources. The predictions are then used to recover the quantized measurements via a two-stage decoding process consisting of bitplane prediction and syndrome decoding. Finally, guided by the structure of the sources and the side information, the sources are reconstructed from the recovered measurements. As a motivating example, we consider the compression of multispectral images acquired on board satellites, where resources, such as computational power and memory, are scarce. Our experimental results exhibit a significant improvement in the rate-distortion trade-off when compared against approaches with similar encoder complexity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In many sensor network applications, the sensor readings are inter-node correlated. In such cases, efficient gathering of sensor readings requires distributed compression. Distributed source coding provides practical solutions for compression of these correlated readings when the appropriate rates for the marginal encoding is known at the sensor nodes. In this thesis, we present a data-gathering technique for sensor networks that exploits correlation between sensor data at different locations in the network. Contrary to distributed source coding, our method does not rely on knowledge of the source correlation model in each node although this knowledge is required at the decoder node. Similar to network coding, our proposed method (which we call Quantized Network Coding) propagates mixtures of packets through the network. The main conceptual difference between our technique and other existing methods is that Quantized Network Coding operates on the field of real numbers and not on a finite field. In this thesis, we study our quantized network coding in both lossless and lossy networks. In the study of lossless networks, we discuss the theoretical foundations for our data gathering technique. By exploiting principles borrowed from compressed sensing, we show that the proposed technique can achieve a good approximation of the sensor readings at the sink node with only a few packets received, and that this approximation gets progressively better as the number of received packets increases. Our first approach is to explain the theoretical foundations for sparse recovery from quantized network coded packets based on an analysis of the Restricted Isometry Property of the corresponding measurement matrices. Extensive simulations comparing the proposed Quantized Network Coding to classic network coding and packet forwarding scenarios demonstrate the delay/distortion advantage of quantized network coding. Furthermore, we discuss the advantages of quantized network coding in a Bayesian scenario where the prior of the sensor readings is available at the decoder node. For such Bayesian scenarios, we also discuss the adaptation of a message passing based decoding algorithm with the aid of simulations. To study the practicality of quantized network coding in lossy networks, we adapt it into the IEEE 802.15.4 standard which characterizes low rate wireless communication for sensor networks. This is done by developing a comprehensive implementation of the PHY and MAC layers of the standard and then adjusting the MAC layer settings to match with our requirements. Our computer simulations using the developed implementation show a significant decrease of the delay in many simulation scenarios. The results obtained using this implementation show more advantages for quantized network coding compared to classic routing based protocols especially for high packet drop rates." --

The few available for advanced readers fail to convey the breadth of knowledge required for those aiming to develop next-generation solutions for WSNs. Filling this void, Wireless Sensor Networks: From Theory to Applications supplies comprehensive coverage of WSNs. In order to provide the wide-ranging guidance required, the book brings together the contributions of domain experts working in the various subfields of WSNs worldwide. This edited volume examines recent advances in WSN technologies and considers the theoretical problems in WSN, including issues with monitoring, routing, and power control. It also details methodologies that can provide solutions to these problems. The book’s 25 chapters are divided into seven parts: Data Collection Physical Layer and Interfacing Routing and Transport Protocols Energy-Saving Approaches Mobile and Multimedia WSN Data Storage and Monitoring Applications The book examines applications of WSN across a range of fields, including health, military, transportation, and mining. Addressing the main challenges in applying WSNs across all phases of our life, it explains how WSNs can assist in community development. Complete with a list of references at the end of each chapter, this book is ideal for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, scholars, academics, industrial researchers, and practicing engineers working on WSNs. The text assumes that readers possess a foundation in computer networks, wireless communication, and basic electronics.
