Book excerpt: In 1998, Brenda Nottestad, a young Christian wife and mother, with two children, was breathing a sigh of relief that her life was so blessed and that her two children were growing into high achieving, good kids. Anorexia and bulimia were foreign to her with the exception of an occasional made-for-TV movie. Until, that is, her own daughter, at age 15 was caught throwing up at school and the cheerleading advisor contacted Brenda. Thus began the journey that is in this book. It is a mother's journal from the depths of disbelief and despair through a maze of counseling, medical treatment and prayer to reach the other side of a mountain she never dreamed her family would be asked to climb. As Brenda grieved, battled and fought the forces of darkness for her daughter, the easy answers she thought would come, just were not there. For every step forward, there were two steps backward. The healing truly had to be a process--a journey of intellect and faith. This book is a remarkable insight into a mother's heart, a daughter's pain, a family's faith, and God's truly amazing grace to overcome the insidious world that is eating disorders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Distorting Mirror analyzes the multiple and complex ways in which urban Chinese subjects saw themselves interacting with the new visual culture that emerged during the turbulent period between the 1880s and the 1930s. The media and visual forms examined include lithography, photography, advertising, film, and theatrical performances. Urbanites actively engaged with and enjoyed this visual culture, which was largely driven by the subjective desire for the empty promises of modernity—promises comprised of such abstract and fleeting concepts as new, exciting, and fashionable. Detailing and analyzing the trajectories of development of various visual representations, Laikwan Pang emphasizes their interactions. In doing so, she demonstrates that visual modernity was not only a combination of independent cultural phenomena, but also a partially coherent sociocultural discourse whose influences were seen in different and collective parts of the culture. The work begins with an overall historical account and theorization of a new lithographic pictorial culture developing at the end of the nineteenth century and an examination of modernity’s obsession with the investigation of the real. Subsequent chapters treat the fascination with the image of the female body in the new visual culture; entertainment venues in which this culture unfolded and was performed; how urbanites came to terms with and interacted with the new reality; and the production and reception of images, the dynamics between these two being a theme explored throughout the book. Modernity, as the author shows, can be seen as spectacle. At the same time, she demonstrates that, although the excessiveness of this spectacle captivated the modern subject, it did not completely overwhelm or immobilize those who engaged with it. After all, she argues, they participated in and performed with this ephemeral visual culture in an attempt to come to terms with their own new, modern self.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one would use a "funhouse" mirror that distorts reflections or a broken mirror that impairs images to apply makeup or style hair. Why, then, do we se the worldly mirrors of others' opinions and our own presumptuous thoughts to view our inner selves? These types of mirrors not only give us a false perception of ourselves, but also they wound us and hold us captive the reflected ugliness of fear, guilt, worry, condemnation, and perfectionism. Many of us see and feel the paralyzing effects of these ugly burdens, but we have no idea how to take them off. Consequently, we continually live in the destructive trap of insecurity, knowing deep down there is more to life than what we are experiencing. Seeing Yourself in the Mirror of Truth illuminates the destructive impact that deception and lies have on your identity. Not only will you become acquainted with the truth that sets you free from this trap, but also you will be taught how to tame, shape, and polish your personality using God's mirror. Just like you partner with the mirror each morning to polish your appearance, you will learn how to partner with God through His Word to see and remove your ugly insecurities as you willingly let God transform you into a beautiful woman in Jesus Christ. Are you ready to look into the mirror of truth?

Book excerpt: R.K. Laxman, cartoonist par excellence, is also one of the country's most entertaining writers. The Distorted Mirror brings together some of his best short stories, essays and travelogues. The collection begins with 'An Accident', a most unusual mystery story where the murder weapon is a newspaper. In other stories, we are introduced to Gopal, a schoolboy in an ordinary small town that is transformed one day when the Viceroy visits; Shantha, a little girl who makes an interesting discovery in the midst of a wedding; and Bhasker, a writer who is suddenly confronted by his past. Each story is marked by Laxman's ability to delineate a character or a moment with a few deft strokes and imbued with his trademark wit. No less fascinating are the travelogues—about the United States, Australia, the Andamans, Darjeeling, Mauritius and Kathmandu—which are brought to life by Laxman's vivid descriptions and his inimitable way of looking at the world around him. The collection is rounded off with a few rare and delightful anecdotes about Laxman's cartooning career, a subject on which he is usually reticent. Accompanied by Laxman's illustrations, the pieces in The Distorted Mirror will amuse and entertain every fan of R.K. Laxman's.

Book excerpt: A mirror, when clear, reflects an exact representation of any who stand before it. Each gift, imperfection, and scar is seen clearly and in detail. A mirror that is skewed will still portray a reflection, but the reflection will not directly represent reality. This is the general theory behind the famed Funhouse Mirrors, and why they are so intriguing. In an instant, one can see their reality differently. Sometimes we see something we dislike, and other times, we see what we prefer. Louis Bianco believes our perceptions are like mirrors, reflecting what occurs in real life back into our cognition. Skewed perceptions, much like mirrors, will distort our cognition, causing us to see reality differently than what is actually in front of us. America, is our cognition distorted? Through this book, Bianco hopes that each of us can decide for ourselves how accurately our perceptions depict reality. ***** "Louis Bianco once again provides our world with extraordinary testimony that is presented in a well-organized, scientific, and yet graceful manner. In Bianco's first creation, he challenged everything we knew about disability and diagnosis. In this powerful book, he challenges every perception we have about our country, our world, and how we see ourselves in our own 'mirror.' Funhouse Mirrors is a must for every bookshelf. I assure you, you will be grateful for this introspective journey with this gifted and brilliant author." ~ Catherine Hughes, bestselling author, blogger, coach, editor, speaker, and trainer, The Caffeinated Advocate

Book excerpt: How did Spanish-American writers and veterans in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century use epic poetry to search for ethical solutions to the violent conflicts of their age?Winner of the 2017-18 AHGBI-Spanish Embassy Publication Prize The Epic Mirror studies how Spanish-American writers and veterans in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century used epic poetry to search for ethical solutions to the violent conflicts of their age. The wars about which they wrote took place at the frontiers of the Spanish empire, where new political communities were emerging: fiercely independent Amerindian republics, rebellious Spanish settlers, maroon kingdoms of fugitive African slaves. This colonial reality generated a distinctive vision of just warfare and political community. Working across the fields of Hispanic literature, the history of political thought, and studies of empire, colonialism and globalisation, Choi reinterprets three major works of colonial Latin American literature: Alonso de Ercilla's La Araucana (1569-90), Pedro de Oña's Arauco domado (1596), and Juan de Miramontes Zuázola's Armas antárticas (1608-9). She argues that these works provide a rare insight into the development of political thought in Viceregal Peru. Through the imaginative mirrors of epic, the reader is forced to ask the same questions of the unfinished conquests of the Americas as of those in Africa, Asia or Europe: when conflicting forces are divided by irreconcilable world views, even if the war is won, how is it possible to achieve peace?'s La Araucana (1569-90), Pedro de Oña's Arauco domado (1596), and Juan de Miramontes Zuázola's Armas antárticas (1608-9). Book excerpt: After immigrating with his German Jewish family to South America in the 1930s, Heinz Magnus hopes to escape the Nazi regime and build a new life for himself. But with the storm clouds of war gathering over Europe, the Politeama Theatre in Buenos Aires is chosen as the venue for the Chess Tournament of Nations. The world's eyes are suddenly fixed on Heinz's newly adopted city. Heinz and a colorful cast of characters--drawn from real life, the author's imagination, and stolen from the pages of Stefan Zweig--find themselves caught up in a web of political intrigue, romantic entanglements, and sporting competition that seems to hold the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Ariel Magnus leaves no stone unturned in his efforts to learn more about his grandfather and the country to which he emigrated in the 1930s. Chess with My Grandfather is a playful, genre-shifting novel combining tales of international espionage, documentary evidence, and family lore. In this extraordinary book, Magnus blends fact and fiction in a delirious exploration of a dark period of history, family, identity, the power of art and literature and, of course, the fascinating world of chess.

Book excerpt: As one of the best-known survivors of the concentration camps, Primo Levi's testimony to his experiences in Auschwitz is internationally recognised as one of the most significant works of the last century. This volume examines each of Levi's works in detail, assessing and analysing the influence of Levi's time in Auschwitz on his writing. It identifies a variety of thematic, temporal, stylistic and linguistic echoes of Levi's concentration camp testimony, and traces these echoes throughout his subsequent, apparently unrelated, work. The book provides original and fascinating insights into the works of this remarkable writer, giving readers a new understanding and perspective on the immense significance and the pervasive influence of the holocaust on Levi's creative output.
