Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a compilation of important information on the full range of radioactive waste forms that have been developed, or at least suggested, for the incorporation of high-level nuclear waste. Many of the results were published in the ''gray literature'' of final reports of national laboratories or in various, generally less available, proceedings volumes. This is the first publication to draw information on nuclear waste forms for high-level wastes together into a single volume. Although borosilicate glass has become the standard waste form, additional research in this compound is still necessary. With improved technology (particularly processing technologies) and with a more detailed knowledge of repository conditions, glasses and second generation waste forms with improved performance properties can be developed. Sustained research programs on nuclear waste form development will yield results that can only add to public confidence and the final, safe disposal of nuclear waste. The aim of this volume is to provide a 'spring board' for these future research efforts. A detailed presentation is given on the properties and performance of non-crystalline waste forms (borosilicate glass, sintered glass, and lead-iron phosphate glass), and crystalline waste forms (Synroc, tailored ceramics, TiO 2 - ceramic matrix, glass-ceramics and FUETAP concrete). A chapter on Novel Waste Forms reviews a number of methods that warrant further development because of their potential superior performance and unique applications. The final chapter includes a tabulated comparison of important waste form properties and an extended discussion on the corrosion process and radiation damage effects for each waste form. Of particular interest is a performance assessment of nuclear waste borosilicate glass and the crystalline ceramic Synroc. This is the first detailed attempt to compare these two important waste forms on the basis of their materials properties. The discussion emphasizes the difficulties in making such a comparison and details the types of data that are required. Each chapter has been written by an expert and includes a current compilation of waste form properties with an extensive list of references. This volume will provide a stimulus for future research as well as useful reference material for scientists working in the field of nuclear waste disposal and materials science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface Complexation Modelling deals with various aspects associate to the modelling of solutes adsorption from of solutes from aqueous solutions to minerals. The individual contributions cover fundamental aspects and applications. Applications cover case studies and present consistent surface complexation parameter sets. The model approaches range from simplistic to mechanistic. More fundamental contributions address underlying phenomena or stress the opportunities of modern computational methods. Several mineral systems are covered, including goethite, gibbsite, clay minerals etc.Surface Complexation Modelling presents the state-of-the-art of surface complexation modelling and suggests ideas for further model development. A number of chapters are authored by scientists working on nuclear waste storage, where the retention of radionuclides contributes to preventing radionuclide migration from the repository to the biosphere. Other contributions come from soil and environmental chemists with an interest in reactive transport of pollutants in soils or aquifers. - Covering a wide range of disciplines - Bringing together contributions from experts in the field - Providing a balance between the theoretical and applied aspects

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume II in a three-volume set on the Behavior of Radionuclides in the Environment, focusing on Chernobyl. Now, so many years after the Chernobyl accident, new data is emerging and important new findings are being made. The book reviews major research achievements concerning the behavior of Chernobyl-derived radionuclides, including their air transport and resuspension, mobility and bioavailability in the soil-water environment, vertical and lateral migration in soils and sediments, soil-to-plant and soil-to-animal transfer, and water-to-aqueous biota transfer. The long-term dynamics of radionuclides in aquatic ecosystems are also discussed, in particular, the heavily contaminated cooling pond of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which is in the process of being decommissioned. Lessons learned from long-term research on the environmental behavior of radionuclides can help us understand the pathways of environmental contamination, which, in turn, will allow us to improve methods for modeling and predicting the long-term effects of pollution. This book features a wealth of original data and findings, many of which have never been published before, or were not available internationally. The contributing authors are experts from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus with more than 30 years of experience investigating Chernobyl-derived radionuclides in the environment. The content presented here can help to predict the evolution of environmental contamination following a nuclear accident, and specifically the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anodic dissolution of uo2 has been studied in aqueous sodium perchlorate solutions at ph approximately 9.5. under potentiostatic conditions two distinct regions of oxidation/dissolution behaviour were observed. in the potential (e) range 0.100 v approximately e approximately 0.350 v (vs. sce) currents decayed continuously with time due to the formation of oxidized surface films which gradually blocked further oxidation of the electrode. steady-state currents were not achieved even after 24 hours. on the basis of anodic and cathodic charges (q sub(a), q sub(c) respectively) obtained by integration of the anodic current-time plots (q sub(a)) and cathodic potential scans to reduce accumulated oxidized surface films (q sub(c)), it was shown that approximately 90% of the anodic oxidation current went to produce these films. for e approximately 0.350 v, steady-state currrents were obtained and measurements of q sub(a) and q sub(c) showed the majority of the current went to produce soluble species. the film blocking anodic dissolution appeared to be either uo sub(2.67) or, more probably, uo3 middle dot 2h2o located primarily at grain boundaries. it is proposed that, at the higher potentials, rapid oxidation and dissolution followed by the hydrolysis of dissolved uranyl species leads to the development of acidic conditions in the grain boundaries. at these lower ph values the uo3 middle dot 2h2o is soluble and therefore does not accumulate. alternatively, if this oxide has been formed by prior oxidation at a lower potential, the formation of protons on oxidizing at e > approximately 0.350v causes its redissolution, allowing the current to rise to a steady-state value. on the basis of tafel slopes, an attempt was made to demonstrate that the observed behaviour was consistent with dissolution under acidic conditions. this analysis was only partially successful.
