Download or read book Cork written by Frank Keohane and published by Pevsner Architectural Guides: Buildings of Ireland. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This authoritative guide to the architecture of County Cork covers all sites and buildings of merit, great and small. Comprehensive and easy to use, this guide covers the architectural riches of Ireland's largest county. The many atmospheric castles and tower houses include Carrigadrohid, Lohort, and Kanturk; among later country houses, Kilshannig and Fota represent Irish Georgian architecture at its best. Coastal towns such as Kinsale and Youghal are built on Viking and Norman foundations. Many of the architectural highlights are in the city of Cork, where the Georgian streets and quays are diversified by grand neoclassical public buildings, presided over by the Gothic Revival masterpiece of St. Fin Barre's Cathedral. The strategic importance of Cork harbor is reflected in its diverse fortifications, especially those of the Stuart, Hanoverian, and Victorian periods"--Publisher's website
Book Synopsis The Classical Commentary by : Gibson
Download or read book The Classical Commentary written by Gibson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection explores the issues raised by the writing and reading of commentaries on classical Greek and Latin texts. Written primarily by practising commentators, the papers examine philosophical, narratological, and historiographical commentaries; ancient, Byzantine, and Renaissance commentary practice and theory, with special emphasis on Galen, Tzetzes, and La Cerda; the relationship between the author of the primary text, the commentary writer, and the reader; special problems posed by fragmentary and spurious texts; the role and scope of citation, selectivity, lemmatization, and revision; the practical future of commentary-writing and publication; and the way computers are changing the shape of the classical commentary. With a genesis in discussion panels mounted in the UK in 1996 and the US in 1997, the volume continues recent international dialogue on the genre and future of commentaries.

Book Synopsis Experimental Lecture by Colonel Spanker by : Anonymous
Download or read book Experimental Lecture by Colonel Spanker written by Anonymous and published by . This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the assembly-room of the Society of Aristocratic Flagellants, Mayfair, Colonel Spanker strives to confirm his thesis that the punishment of a refined young lady produces more exquisite pleasures than flogging lower-class women and prostitutes... Experimental Lecture by Colonel Spanker is one of the most notorious nineteenth-century English flagellant novels. Henry Spencer Ashbee's Catena Librorum Tacendorum describes it as 'the most coldly cruel and unblushingly indecent of any we have ever read, [it] stands entirely alone in the English language.' (Fraxi, 1885: 250) This edition of Experimental Lecture also includes the full text of The Yellow Room or, Alice Darvell's Subjection, a late Victorian novella focusing on the delights of birching and the pleasures of cruelty. Following the death of her aunt, beautiful Alice Darvell is sent to live with Sir Edward Bosmere, a stern disciplinarian and devotee of Venus Callipyge, who initiates her into the mysteries of the rod. The Yellow Room was first published in 1891. The name of the author, M. Le Comte du Bouleau, is a pseudonym. Authorship is attributed to an English lawyer, Stanislas Matthew de Rhodes (1857-1932). He is also credited with writing Gynecocracy (1893) and The Petticoat Dominant (1898), which are available from Birchgrove Press.
