Book excerpt: The amount and variety of waste that humanity dumps in landfill sites is nothing short of a scandal, believes Rafat Siddique, of Deemed University in Patiala, India. Instead, we ought to be building new homes out of it! Siddique shows in this important book that many non-hazardous waste materials and by-products which are landfilled, can in fact be used in making concrete and similar construction materials.

Book excerpt: A cement kiln carrying out co-processing is typically equipped with a bypass system, to solve the problem of chlorine enrichment and circulation in the kiln. However, in such a setup, the proper disposal of bypass ash is technically difficult. In this study, the fact that chlorine and potassium are enriched in kiln dust (and bypass dust) was confirmed by tracking and analyzing the composition and phase of the fuel, raw materials, and kiln dust in a cement kiln system. Additionally, we elucidated the formation mechanism of the chlor-alkali compound, KCl, in the kiln. Furthermore, with bypass ash as a raw material, the dissolution of K+ and Cl+ ions and the removal of harmful metal ions, such as Pb2+in bypass ash, were realized by water washing and cement kiln tail flue gas treatment. The extraction rate of Cl element was 76.62 %. Based on the fact that the solubilities of different salts vary with temperature, we developed a suitable three-effect evaporation process. A KCl salt, with purity of up to 90 %, was successfully extracted from the washing solution of bypass ash, using the heat provided by the waste heat power generation system of the cement kiln. Except for KCl, all other materials could be reintroduced to the cement kiln system, without secondary pollution. In summary, in this study, we effectively solved the problem of chlorine enrichment in the co-disposal process through the bypass, while avoiding the adverse impact of Cl resulting from the waste on cement production and ensuring the quality of cement products and effective waste disposal. In addition, the entire system realized the highly innovative engineering practice of turning waste into treasure (producing high-purity sylvite products from kiln ash). The hot steam of the salt extraction process was also provided by the waste heat power generation system, which reduced the manufacturing energy consumption and had apparent environmental and economic effects. This study provides a reference for cleaner production and carbon reduction technologies and can serve as a framework for future resource utilization in the cement industry.

Book excerpt: Incineration has been used widely for waste disposal, including household, hazardous, and medical wasteâ€"but there is increasing public concern over the benefits of combusting the waste versus the health risk from pollutants emitted during combustion. Waste Incineration and Public Health informs the emerging debate with the most up-to-date information available on incineration, pollution, and human healthâ€"along with expert conclusions and recommendations for further research and improvement of such areas as risk communication. The committee provides details on: Processes involved in incineration and how contaminants are released. Environmental dynamics of contaminants and routes of human exposure. Tools and approaches for assessing possible human health effects. Scientific concerns pertinent to future regulatory actions. The book also examines some of the social, psychological, and economic factors that affect the communities where incineration takes place and addresses the problem of uncertainty and variation in predicting the health effects of incineration processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lea's Chemistry of Cement and Concrete deals with the chemical and physical properties of cements and concretes and their relation to the practical problems that arise in manufacture and use. As such it is addressed not only to the chemist and those concerned with the science and technology of silicate materials, but also to those interested in the use of concrete in building and civil engineering construction. Much attention is given to the suitability of materials, to the conditions under which concrete can excel and those where it may deteriorate and to the precautionary or remedial measures that can be adopted. First published in 1935, this is the fourth edition and the first to appear since the death of Sir Frederick Lea, the original author. Over the life of the first three editions, this book has become the authority on its subject. The fourth edition is edited by Professor Peter C. Hewlett, Director of the British Board of Agrement and visiting Industrial Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Dundee. Professor Hewlett has brought together a distinguished body of international contributors to produce an edition which is a worthy successor to the previous editions.

This book was released on 2019-02-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the quest to mitigate the buildup of greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere, researchers and policymakers have increasingly turned their attention to techniques for capturing greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, either from the locations where they are emitted or directly from the atmosphere. Once captured, these gases can be stored or put to use. While both carbon storage and carbon utilization have costs, utilization offers the opportunity to recover some of the cost and even generate economic value. While current carbon utilization projects operate at a relatively small scale, some estimates suggest the market for waste carbon-derived products could grow to hundreds of billions of dollars within a few decades, utilizing several thousand teragrams of waste carbon gases per year. Gaseous Carbon Waste Streams Utilization: Status and Research Needs assesses research and development needs relevant to understanding and improving the commercial viability of waste carbon utilization technologies and defines a research agenda to address key challenges. The report is intended to help inform decision making surrounding the development and deployment of waste carbon utilization technologies under a variety of circumstances, whether motivated by a goal to improve processes for making carbon-based products, to generate revenue, or to achieve environmental goals.
