Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "After using primary and secondary oil recovery methods, about two third of the original oil in place is left behind in the reservoir. Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods are being used to recover that oil. CO2 flooding is one of the EOR methods that is used to recover the oil. The interest here lies in recovery of heavy oils. The dissolution of CO2 in oil reduces oil viscosity and swells it, making it easier to displace the oil. FLUENT is used to solve the problem of CO2 displacing heavy oil in a tube. Different velocities/capillary numbers (Ca) and different tube radii are used as input into FLUENT to solve different cases. The oil film thickness that left behind (h[subscript infinity]) is reported both without mass transfer and with mass transfer. The oil film thickness that is left behind, h[subscript infinity] is decreased when capillary number is decreased. When there is no mass transfer, the non-dimensional film thickness left behind h[subscript infinity]/R plotted against capillary number Ca fit Bretherton line. Even under mass transfer of CO2 into oil, bubbles show Bretherton-type behavior. Convection in this case opposes the mass transfer and limits how much CO2 can dissolve in oil"--Abstract, Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: Results of a comprehensive research program on factors influencing CO2 flooding are reported. Equipment constructed for static equilibrium measurements of phase volumes, compositions, densities and viscosities is described. Design of an apparatus used for a variety of displacement tests is also reported. Apparatus and experimental procedures are described for a new experiment in which equilibrium phase compositions can be measured rapidly and continuously. Results of displacements of crude oil from slim tubes, cores and mixing cells are presented and interpreted in terms of detailed measurements of the phase behavior and fluid properties of the CO2-crude oil mixtures. The complex phase behavior of low temperature CO2-crude oil mixtures is described and compared with similar behavior for CO2-alkane mixtures. A simple correlation is offered for the ranges of reservoir temperature and pressure at which liquid-liquid and liquid-liquid-vapor phase behavior should be expected to occur. Direct evidence is presented of the efficiency with which a CO2-rich liquid phase can extract hydrocarbons from a crude oil. A simple one-dimensional process simulator for CO2 flooding applications is described. Simulation results are compared with experimental data from slim tube displacements. Good agreement is reported between calculated and experimental results as long as the volume change of CO2 on mixing with the oil is not too great. Sensitivity of calculated results to phase behavior and fluid properties is discussed. Comparison of displacement results, phase behavior measurements, and model calculations provides strong evidence that the high displacement efficiency which can be obtained when pressure is high enough and viscous fingering is controlled is the result of efficient extraction of a broad range of hydrocarbons by a dense CO2-rich phase which is a liquid if the temperature is below about 50°C (130°F).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last 10 years the world has come to a point where the easily explorable oil deposits have now been found, and it is anticipated that such deposits will be depleted by the beginning of the Twenty-first Century. However, the increasing demand of man kind for energy has caused technologists to look into ways of find ing new sources or to reevaluat:e unconventional sources which, in the past, have not been economical. In this respect, heavy crude and tar sand oils are becoming important in fulfilling the world's energy requirements. What are heavy crude and tar sand oils? There is still some confusion as to their definitions, inasmuch as they vary among organizations and countries. In an effort to set agreed meanings, UNITAR, in a meeting in February 1982 in Venezuela, proposed the following definitions (see also Table 1): 1. Heavy crude oil and tar sand oil are petroleum or petroleum like liquids or semi-solids naturally occurring in porous media. The porous media are sands, sandstone, and carbonate rocks. 2. These oils will be characterized by viscosity and density. Viscosity will be used to define heavy crude oil and tar sand oil, and density (oAPI) will be used when viscosity measurements are not available. 3. Heavy crude oil has a gas-free viscosity of 100-10000 mPa.s (cp) 3 o at reservoir temperatures, or a density of 943 kg/m (20 API) 3 o o to 1000 kg/m (10 API) at 15.6 C and at atmospheric oressure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good progress has been made on all aspects of the carbon dioxide (CO/sub 2/) research program at the New Mexico Petroleum Recovery Research Center. Construction of high pressure experimental equipment for measurements of CO/sub 2/ displacement efficiency in cores and slim tubes has been completed. A sophisticated apparatus for measurements of phase behavior and fluid properties of mixtures of CO/sub 2/ and crude oils has been designed and built. The experimental setup permits a variety of multiple contact phase behavior experiments which explore mixture compositions which realistically model displacement processes at temperatures and pressures of interest. Gas chromatography techniques previously used to characterize crude oils have been extended to allow analyses of mixtures containing CO/sub 2/ and hydrocarbons ranging from methane to molecules as heavy as tetracontane (C/sub 40/). A series of displacements with alcohol-oil-water mixtures, which are analogue systems with useful similarities to CO/sub 2/-hydrocarbon systems have been completed. A one-dimensonal CO/sub 2/ flooding simulator has been developed which gives excellent agreement between simulated and experimental results for the analogue alcohol-oil-water displacements. Finally, a qualitative analysis is given for the complex phase behavior observed for mixtures of CO/sub 2/ and crude oils at temperatures below 50/sup 0/C and the effects of phase behavior on expected displacement efficiency are calculated. The results indicate that relatively small changes in pressure can be expected to have a strong influence on the efficiency of CO/sub 2/ displacements of crude oils.
