Download or read book Bayt Al-'Aqqad written by Peder Mortensen and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today Bayt al-'Aqqad is one of 23 buildings in old Damascus which come under the UNESCO World Heritage programme, but when the Danish Institute in Damascus took over the house in 1997 it had been derelict for 50 years and was in a very sorry state indeed. In the following years Danish architects and restorers worked together with Syrian colleagues on an admirable restoration of the house. Step by step new aspects turned up, showing that the building was not only a beautiful house with a long history - the house is founded on the Roman theatre of Herod - but also that it contained fine examples of the most important periods in the architectural history of Damascus. In this lavishly illustrated book the story of the house and its resurrection is told by architects, restorers, archaeologists and historians and it is a must for anybody who has experienced the joy and fascination of Islamic art and architecture.

Download or read book Damascus written by Brigid Keenan and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damascus, reputed to be the worldʹs oldest continually inhabited city, has enjoyed a history of immense grandeur, enormous political and mercantile power, and great cultural and artistic achievement. In addition to some of Islamʹs most magnificent architecture, such as the Umayyad Mosque, the city boasts a heritage of fairy-tale palaces and sumptuous private houses. Sadly, many of them are in urgent need of restoration. Brigid Keenan and Tim Beddow were given unprecedented access to the inner, "hidden" city, which has resulted in a book that is of immense importance to all concerned with the heritage of architecture in the Islamic world. The superb photographs include façades, courtyards, alleyways and fountains, and the breathtaking interiors that often lie behind the unassuming walls of the old town, with exquisite details in stone, wood, paint, marble, plaster, glass and mother-of-pearl. The whole, published with the generous support of Wafic Rida Said, forms a convincing and elegiac plea for the preservation of the heart of this historic ancient capital. -- Jacket.

Created by world renown coach, Cal Dietz, Triphasic Training breaks down dynamic, athletic movements into their three components (eccentric, isometric, and concentric), and maximizes performance gains by applying stress to the athlete in a way that allows for the continuous development of strength, speed, and power. Who uses Triphasic Training: Everyone! From elite level athletes to absolute beginners, the triphasic method of training allows for maximal performance gains in minimal time. For that reason professional athletes from all backgrounds seek out Coach Dietz each off-season to train with his triphasic system. Coach Dietz has worked with hundreds of athletes from the NFL, NHL, and MLB, as well as several dozen Olympic athletes in track and field, swimming, and hockey. What the book is about: Triphasic Training was originally a digital book with over 3,000 hyperlinks and 6 hours of video lectures, showing the reader exactly how to perform every exercise and apply the training methods. To ensure that you do not miss out on this valuable component, inside your book you will find a web link to a downloadable PDF that contains all of the hyperlinks and videos from the original digital book. The PDF is laid out to allow you to easily follow along as you read the book. Simply scroll in the PDF to the page that you are reading in the book and it will have every hyperlink and video that is on that page. The book contains over 350 pages, divided clearly into 2 parts: the “why” and the “what”. The first three sections go through the physiological basis for the Triphasic method, undulated block periodization, and general biological applications of stress. The authors will explain how to incorporate the Triphasic methods into existing programs, with complete descriptions on adapting it to virtually any scenario. Sections 4 through 7 are devoted entirely to programming, with over 3,000 exercises and 52 weeks of programs for numerous different sports. Included in the programming section are: Over 3,000 exercises, each hyperlinked to a video tutorial that shows you exactly how to perform the exercise. 5 separate 24-week training programs built for either 6 day, 5 day, 4 day, 3 day, or 2 day models. Over 6 hours of video lectures by Coach Dietz further explaining the Triphasic Training method. These lectures go even deeper into the physiology and application of what he does with his elite athletes. Over two dozen tables showing exactly when and how to modify exercises to ensure continuous improvement in your athletes. Peaking programs for football lineman or skill players, baseball, swimming, volleyball, and hockey players (among others). A complete 52 week training program for football.
Book Synopsis Energy Efficiency and Historic Buildings by : David Pickles
Download or read book Energy Efficiency and Historic Buildings written by David Pickles and published by . This book was released on 2015-05-14 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidance is aimed at homeowners and those managing or renting historic or older domestic buildings who may need to commission an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) or who have received one for an older property that has been purchased or rented. Details are provided on the type of information included in an EPC, how it is calculated, and its limitations as an assessment method when applied to older buildings. The guidance also covers the issues to be taken into account when commissioning an EPC and considering its recommendations. Almost every older building can accommodate some energy improvements without harming either its special interest or environmental performance. However, an appropriate balance needs to be achieved between building conservation and measures to improve energy efficiency if lasting damage is to be avoided both to a building’s character and significance and its fabric.

Download or read book Frankenstein Unbound written by Brian W. Aldiss and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A disruption of time and space sends a modern man back two hundred years to confront Dr. Frankenstein’s immortal monster in this brilliant reinvention of Mary Shelley’s classic tale Some years into the twenty-first century, a newly devised weapon of mass destruction will do far worse than kill; it will disrupt time and space. Suddenly, land, buildings, animals, and people are falling through “timeslips” and being transported briefly back to earlier eras. One of these inadvertent time travelers, Joe Bodenland, is shocked when he finds himself parked outside a villa on the shore of Lake Geneva—and soon after, unbelievably, in the presence of nineteenth-century literary luminaries Lord Byron and Percy Shelley, along with Shelley’s very enticing fiancée, budding author Mary. But when Joe comes face to face with a real, flesh-and-blood Victor Frankenstein and the monster the mad doctor brought into this world, the visitor from the future realizes that not only has time been disrupted, reality itself has been transmogrified. And this Frankenstein, it seems, is far from finished with his unholy endeavors, leaving it up to Joe to make it right for the sake of history—and for the bewitching lady novelist who has stolen his heart—before he is rudely thrust back to his own time. An absolutely stunning reinvention of a cherished literary classic, Frankenstein Unbound proves once more that there are no limits to the unparalleled creative genius of science fiction Grand Master W. Brian Aldiss, one of the most revered names in the field of speculative fiction.
Download or read book The Combinations written by Louis Armand and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. Drama. Art. The "European anti-novel" in all its unrepentant glory is here in THE COMBINATIONS, following in the tradition of Sterne, Rabelais, Cervantes, Joyce, Perec. Shortlisted for the 2016 Not the Booker prize. In 8 octaves, 64 chapters and 888 pages, Louis Armand's THE COMBINATIONS is an unprecedented "work of attempted fiction" that combines the beauty & intellectual exertion that is chess with the panorama of futility & chaos that is Prague (a.k.a. "Golem City"), across the 20th-century and before/after. Golem City, the ship of fools boarded by the famed D's (e.g. John) and K's (e.g. Edward) of the 16th/17th centuries (who attempted and failed to turn lead into gold), and the infamous H's (e.g. Adolf, e.g. Reinhard) of the 20th (who attempted and succeeded in turning flesh into soap). Armand's prose weaves together the City's thousand-and- one fascinating tales with a deeply personal account of one lost soul set adrift amid the early-90s' awakening from the nightmare that was the previous half-century of communist Mitteleuropa. THE COMBINATIONS is a text whose 1) erudition dazzles, 2) structure humbles, 3) monotony never bores, 4) humour disarms, 5) relentlessness overwhelms, 6) storytelling captivates, 7) poignancy remains poignant, and 8) style simply never exhausts itself. Your move, Reader.
Book Synopsis Studies in Tectonic Culture by : Kenneth Frampton
Download or read book Studies in Tectonic Culture written by Kenneth Frampton and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2001-08-24 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed of ten essays and an epilogue that trace the history of contemporary form as an evolving poetic of structure and construction, the book's analytical framework rests on Frampton's close readings of key French and German, and English sources from the eighteenth century to the present. Kenneth Frampton's long-awaited follow-up to his classic A Critical History of Modern Architecture is certain to influence any future debate on the evolution of modern architecture. Studies in Tectonic Culture is nothing less than a rethinking of the entire modern architectural tradition. The notion of tectonics as employed by Frampton—the focus on architecture as a constructional craft—constitutes a direct challenge to current mainstream thinking on the artistic limits of postmodernism, and suggests a convincing alternative. Indeed, Frampton argues, modern architecture is invariably as much about structure and construction as it is about space and abstract form. Composed of ten essays and an epilogue that trace the history of contemporary form as an evolving poetic of structure and construction, the book's analytical framework rests on Frampton's close readings of key French and German, and English sources from the eighteenth century to the present. He clarifies the various turns that structural engineering and tectonic imagination have taken in the work of such architects as Perret, Wright, Kahn, Scarpa, and Mies, and shows how both constructional form and material character were integral to an evolving architectural expression of their work. Frampton also demonstrates that the way in which these elements are articulated from one work to the next provides a basis upon which to evaluate the works as a whole. This is especially evident in his consideration of the work of Perret, Mies, and Kahn and the continuities in their thought and attitudes that linked them to the past. Frampton considers the conscious cultivation of the tectonic tradition in architecture as an essential element in the future development of architectural form, casting a critical new light on the entire issue of modernity and on the place of much work that has passed as "avant-garde." Book Synopsis Fenitschka ; And, Deviations by : Lou Andreas-Salomé
Download or read book Fenitschka ; And, Deviations written by Lou Andreas-Salomé and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of these two novellas, Lou Andreas SalomÈ, is not as well known through her own writing as through her friendships with such men as Friedrich Nietzsche, Rainer Maria Rilke, Sigmund Freud, Martin Buber, et al. and on whom she had significant influence. As one of the first women to study at a European university, her relationships with men differed vastly from those of other women of her time, and one might count her among the avant-garde of the women's movement. Fenitschka, the first of the two stories in this volume, is based on an experience in Lou SalomÈ's life which gave rise to the libretto of the better known of two operas, Lulu by Alan Berg. The second opera entitled Deviations was written only a few years ago by the Italian composer and conductor Guiseppe Sinopoli. Whereas the first work bears only a very slightóand less than favorableóresemblance to the character of this exceptional woman, the second, though not a chronological account of her life, captures her spirit much more faithfully and once again bears witness to the fact that she aroused and stimulated the creativity of those whose lives she touched.
