Book Synopsis Advances in Optical Amplifiers by : Paul Urquhart
Download or read book Advances in Optical Amplifiers written by Paul Urquhart and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical amplifiers play a central role in all categories of fibre communications systems and networks. By compensating for the losses exerted by the transmission medium and the components through which the signals pass, they reduce the need for expensive and slow optical-electrical-optical conversion. The photonic gain media, which are normally based on glass- or semiconductor-based waveguides, can amplify many high speed wavelength division multiplexed channels simultaneously. Recent research has also concentrated on wavelength conversion, switching, demultiplexing in the time domain and other enhanced functions. Advances in Optical Amplifiers presents up to date results on amplifier performance, along with explanations of their relevance, from leading researchers in the field. Its chapters cover amplifiers based on rare earth doped fibres and waveguides, stimulated Raman scattering, nonlinear parametric processes and semiconductor media. Wavelength conversion and other enhanced signal processing functions are also considered in depth. This book is targeted at research, development and design engineers from teams in manufacturing industry, academia and telecommunications service operators.

Book Synopsis Design and the Elastic Mind by : Paola Antonelli
Download or read book Design and the Elastic Mind written by Paola Antonelli and published by The Museum of Modern Art. This book was released on 2008 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few decades, individuals have experienced dramatic changes in some of the most established dimensions of human life: time, space, matter, and individuality. Minds today must be able to synthesize such transformations, whether they are working across several time zones, travelling between satellite maps and nanoscale images, drowning in information, or acting fast in order to preserve some slow downtime. Design and the Elastic Mind focuses on designers ability to grasp momentous advances in technology, science and social mores and convert them into useful objects and systems. The projects included range from nanodevices to vehicles, appliances to interfaces and building facades, pragmatic solutions for everyday use to provocative ideas meant to influence our future choices. Designed by award-winning book designer Irma Boom, this volume also features essays by Paola Antonelli; design critic and historian Hugh Aldersey- Williams; visualization design expert Peter Hall; and nanophysicist Ted Sargent that further explore the promising relationship between design and science.
Download or read book Félix Guattari written by Gary Genosko and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first detailed assessment of the life and work of Felix Guattari--"Mr. Anti" as the French press labelled him--the friend of and collaborator with Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Lacan and Antonio Negri, and one of the 20th Century's last great activist-intellectuals. Guattari is widely known for his celebrated writings with Deleuze, but these writings do not represent the true breadth and impact of his thinking, writing and activism. Guattari's major work as a clinical and theoretical innovator in psychoanalysis was closely linked to his participation in struggles against Europe.
Book Synopsis Machine Learning for Computer Vision by : Roberto Cipolla

The International Computer Vision Summer School - ICVSS was established in 2007 to provide both an objective and clear overview and an in-depth analysis of the state-of-the-art research in Computer Vision. The courses are delivered by world renowned experts in the field, from both academia and industry, and cover both theoretical and practical aspects of real Computer Vision problems. The school is organized every year by University of Cambridge (Computer Vision and Robotics Group) and University of Catania (Image Processing Lab). Different topics are covered each year. A summary of the past Computer Vision Summer Schools can be found at: http://www.dmi.unict.it/icvss This edited volume contains a selection of articles covering some of the talks and tutorials held during the last editions of the school. The chapters provide an in-depth overview of challenging areas with key references to the existing literature.
Download or read book Nature Design written by Angeli Sachs and published by Lars Muller Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nature has been a source of inspiration in the design of the human environment, and its influence on contemporary design is more than evident. The "model of nature," with its forms, structures, and organizing principles, does not only inspire the widest range of concept and design processes, but also can be expressed in a broad spectrum of forms and functions. Nature Design addresses this phenomenon from the eighteenth century until today, and presents an international selection of objects and projects from the fields of design, architecture, landscape architecture, art, photography, and scientific research that do not simply depict or imitate nature, but use it as a starting point and reservoir of inspiration for eclectic and innovative responses to the relationship between man and his environment." --Book Jacket.

Book Synopsis Aesthetics and Its Discontents by : Jacques Rancière
Download or read book Aesthetics and Its Discontents written by Jacques Rancière and published by Polity. This book was released on 2009-08-24 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only yesterday aesthetics stood accused of concealing cultural games of social distinction. Now it is considered a parasitic discourse from which artistic practices must be freed. But aesthetics is not a discourse. It is an historical regime of the identification of art. This regime is paradoxical, because it founds the autonomy of art only at the price of suppressing the boundaries separating its practices and its objects from those of everyday life and of making free aesthetic play into the promise of a new revolution. Aesthetics is not a politics by accident but in essence. But this politics operates in the unresolved tension between two opposed forms of politics: the first consists in transforming art into forms of collective life, the second in preserving from all forms of militant or commercial compromise the autonomy that makes it a promise of emancipation. This constitutive tension sheds light on the paradoxes and transformations of critical art. It also makes it possible to understand why today's calls to free art from aesthetics are misguided and lead to a smothering of both aesthetics and politics in ethics.
