Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discussions on the Gospels With the exception of a few trifling corrections, the only changes made in this new edition of my work will be found in the insertion of a number of additional notes and illustrations, and of an entire chapter in Part Second, bearing chiefly on the proper authenticity of the Gospels as recently challenged by M. Renan. I have not found any reason to doubt the soundness of the general conclusion which it was my object to establish, or to distrust the validity of the several arguments by which it is supported. On the contrary, after the most careful and repeated consideration of the views here set forth as to the Language of our Lord and His disciples, and the most earnest and grateful attention to the remarks of reviewers, it is with increased confidence that I again submit this portion of my work to the judgment of Biblical scholars. No early or easy acceptance could be anticipated for views so entirely opposed to prevalent conceptions as those which I have ventured to present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quiet Talks on John's Gospel It will be seen very quickly that this little book makes no pretension to being a commentary on, or an exposition of, John's Gospel. That is left to the scholarly folk who eat their meals in the sacred classical languages of the past. It is simply a homely attempt to let out a little of what has been sifting in these years past of this wondrous miniature Bible from John's pen. But I have endeavoured to make every chapter intelligible to readers who are unacquainted with Greek, the welcome which has been extended to my Books of the New Testament having proved to me that there are many persons who, whether they can read Greek or not, want to know the true history of the Gospels. It has been necessary to omit all discussion of many interesting questions. But, I trust that attention has been called to all the most vital, and especially to those which bear upon the Person and teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ. - From the Preface

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels and the Gospel Such readers required no general introduction to the subject to ensure a patient consideration of the immensely important problems of Gospel criticism laid before them; and even now, when these papers go forth in book-form to a wider public, the majority of my readers will still be of those who take an intelligent interest in the subject, and who will approach it without pre j udice. They have the courage to think for them selves, and are, therefore, not to be deterred from reading a book because it bears the name of a Society whose intentions and labours have, for the past quarter of a century, been for the most part as greatly misunderstood as the work of all pioneers the world over in every advance towards a better understanding of the nature of things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of John: An Exposition In each section the text of the American Standard Revised version is given first, then some suggestive com ment which should be enlarged and; supplemented, and then follow some questions for personal reflection and for discussion in the class. These questions are not at all meant to be exhaustive. They are merely suggestive. R. The student should master the content of each paragraph of the Gospel so that at the end he can review in his memory the whole story of the Gospel. To this end each lesson should include a quick review of the sub stance of the Gospel from the beginning. 2. Each section should be viewed and grasped in its relation to the whole scheme and argument of the Gospel. The student should refer constantly to the analysis of the Gospel on pages 19 - 22, and to the fuller analysis of each section on the half-title pages preceding it. 3. The lessons of each section should be taken home into our hearts. The two best books on the Gospel from which help has been constantly drawn and freely used are Westcott' 5 Commentary on the Gospel of John and Dods' volumes on John m the Expositor' 5 Bible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostolic Gospel: With a Critical Reconstruction of the d104 The subject of the present volume has gradually become prominent in recent years through the labour of New Testament critics. The Apostolic Gospel is a primitive document which now exists only as one among other elements contained in the four canonical gospels, and especially in the first and the third. Systematic attempts have been made to restore this document to its original form by the method of comparative criticism. My work differs in several respects from the attempts which have hitherto been made. It is more conservative, inasmuch as it preserves and admits into the text a number of narratives and sayings which have been rejected by critics even like Weiss and Wendt, who are not negative in their tendency. It is also a departure from current opinion, inasmuch as it involves a new estimate of the gospels and a new conception of Christs teaching and ministry. My argument is based entirely on textual evidence. In accordance with such evidence I have rearranged the sayings which are scattered through the gospels or gathered together into secondary formations; and the result is a series of discourses, each of which is authenticated by a clear connection of thought and by adaptation to the historical situation. The memoir thus gained is chronological. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels The object of the Oxford Library of Practical Theology is to supply some carefully considered teaching on matters of Religion to that large body of devout laymen who desire instruction, but are not attracted by the learned treatises which appeal to the theologian. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to translate the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of everyday practical religion; and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title 'The Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. The Editors, while not holding themselves precluded from suggesting criticisms, have regarded their proper task as that of editing, and accordingly they have not interfered with the responsibility of each writer for his treatment of his own subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Authenticity of the Four Gospels N ow, notwithstanding the elaborate character of the controversies which have been raised respecting this question, it will be found that the case can after all be very simply stated. It might be sup posed, from the manner in which the problem is generally discussed by Opponents of the Christian faith, that some elaborate and far-fetched argument is necessary in order to vindicate the received belief respecting the Gospels. There could not be a greater misapprehension. It is the case of our opponents that is marked by these characteristics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Formation of the Gospels The ensuing attempt to solve the synoptic problem is based primarily on the doublets and inconsistencies from which none of the synoptic gospels is free, and on the differences of order by which all three are distinguished. No pretence is made to completeness of treatment. A construction-theory is sketched, which must stand or fall by the test, Will it work?
