Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When corporations claim the same citizenship rights as human citizens, they exercise an undue influence on health policy and democratic processes. Surprisingly, the same basic repertoire of tactics has been found to be employed by corporations to effect this influence, regardless of the specific industry at work. In this book, authors from around the world reveal the range of tactics used across the corporate world that ultimately favor the bottom line over the greater good. The Bottom Line or Public Health deconstructs some of the most ubiquitous tactics at play, including public relations, political influence, legal maneuvering, and financial power, using the pharmaceutical, food and agriculture, tobacco, alcohol, and motor vehicle industries as illustration. However, there is a growing global movement to counter this corporate force. The book discusses the role of non-governmental organizations, indigenous peoples' groups, health advocates, and social justice activists, and the ways in which they are working to reduce corporate power and put control of policy back in the hands of individuals. The Bottom Line or Public Health is for scholars interested in studying the corporate entity, and for individuals and organizations who want to reclaim democracy for human citizens so that health is placed above the bottom line.

Book excerpt: Health Professional as Educator: Principles of Teaching and Learning focuses on the role of the health professional as educator of patients/clients, staff, and students in the clinical arena and classroom settings. It covers key principles of teaching and learning in both scope and depth, providing information from research and practice on the educational process, the characteristics of the learner, and techniques and strategies of teaching and learning. This comprehensive text covers important topics including literacy; compliance and motivation; assessment of learning needs, learning styles, and readiness to learn; behavioral objectives; teaching methods; instructional materials; technology in education; gender, socioeconomic, and cultural influences on learning; and evaluation of teaching and learning. Case studies are provided in each chapter for application of the concepts, review questions at the end of each chapter assist the reader with review of the important material presented, and an instructor's manual provides numerous materials for presentation and testing of content. Unlike other textbooks on education, this text contains a comprehensive coverage of literacy in the adult client population, including guidelines on how to develop and/or critique printed education materials for effective patient/client teaching. It also includes a chapter on writing behavioral objectives and developing teaching plans and learning contracts. There are unique topics included in this text, such as the teaching and learning of motor skills, how to access motivation, the concept of the learning curve, the concept of the spacing effect (massed and distributive learning); gender, socioeconomic, and cultural attributes of the learner, working with a wide variety of diverse populations, and the ethics of student-teacher and client-teacher relationships. - Publisher.

Book excerpt: Factoring health and related costs into decision making is essential to confronting the nation's health problems and enhancing public well-being. Some policies and programs historically not recognized as relating to health are believed or known to have important health consequences. For example, public health has been linked to an array of policies that determine the quality and location of housing, availability of public transportation, land use and street connectivity, agricultural practices and the availability of various types of food, and development and location of businesses and industry. Improving Health in the United States: The Role of Health Impact Assessment offers guidance to officials in the public and private sectors on conducting HIAs to evaluate public health consequences of proposed decisions-such as those to build a major roadway, plan a city's growth, or develop national agricultural policies-and suggests actions that could minimize adverse health impacts and optimize beneficial ones. Several approaches could be used to incorporate aspects of health into decision making, but HIA holds particular promise because of its applicability to a broad array of programs, consideration of both adverse and beneficial health effects, ability to consider and incorporate various types of evidence, and engagement of communities and stakeholders in a deliberative process. The report notes that HIA should not be assumed to be the best approach to every health policy question but rather should be seen as part of a spectrum of public health and policy-oriented approaches. The report presents a six-step framework for conducting HIA of proposed policies, programs, plans, and projects at federal, state, tribal, and local levels, including within the private sector. In addition, the report identifies several challenges to the successful use of HIA, such as balancing the need to provide timely information with the realities of varying data quality, producing quantitative estimates of health effects, and engaging stakeholders.
