Book excerpt: The study describes the integration attempts of Russian immigrants to the Finnish labour market and to the Finnish society. The aim is to describe and examine the immigration and integration as a process, investigating the possible obstacles, difficulties and challenges on integration. The results of the study will show what kind of difficulties the integration process has as well as the demands of the Finnish labour market when Russian immigrants are seeking employment.Even though the integration process of Russian immigrants is under investigation, the research has a presumption. The research concentrates into the integration process from the perspective of Russian immigrants. The presumption is that there can be discrimination against the Russian immigrants both in Finnish society and Finnish labour market. Integration to the society is approached from the perspective of individual experience. Integration to the labour market is simply measured by getting employed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines racial and ethnic discrimination in the labour markets and workplaces of western Europe. Scholars from ten different countries set out the experience and implications of this exclusion for two main groups: the more established second and third generations of postwar migrant descent, and the 'new' migrants, including seasonal and undocumented workers and refugees, who are vulnerable to extreme exploitation and unregulated working environments. The book finishes by addressing the implications of these issues for trade unions and employers in Europe.

Book excerpt: The Finnish population will age more rapidly over the next 25 years than in most other OECD countries, with the numbers aged 65 years or older likely to increase from 15 per cent in the year 2000 to 25 per cent by 2025. These population ageing trends are likely to result in labour shortages which could adversely impact on production levels, as well as straining public expenditures which are already relatively high by OECD standards. The report finds that Finland will need to reverse the trend towards early retirement if it is to meet these challenges, and recommends a number of measures to achieve this aim, including reforming pensions and income support arrangements; removing barriers to employment of older workers and improving their employability through lifelong learning strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK population is ageing rapidly. While age discrimination laws are seen as having broad potential to address the 'ageing challenge' and achieve instrumental and intrinsic objectives in the context of employment, it is unclear what impact they are having in practice. This monograph addresses two overarching research questions in the employment field: How are UK age discrimination laws operating in practice? How (if at all) could UK age discrimination laws be improved? A reflexive law theoretical standpoint is employed to investigate these issues, applying a mixed methods research design that engages qualitative, quantitative, doctrinal and comparative elements. This book demonstrates the substantial limitations of the Equality Act 2010 (UK) for achieving instrumental and intrinsic objectives. Drawing on qualitative expert interviews, statistical analysis and organisational case studies, it illustrates the failure of age discrimination laws to achieve attitudinal change in the UK, and reveals the limited prevalence of proactive measures to support older workers. Integrating doctrinal analysis, comparative analysis of Finnish law, and the Delphi method, it proposes targeted legal and policy changes to address demographic change, and offers an agenda for reform that may increase the impact of age discrimination laws, and enable them to respond effectively to demographic ageing. Runner up of the 2017 SLS Peter Birks Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship. The author was also awarded the 2020 ISA-RCSL Adam Podgórecki Junior Prize.
