Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of the Sudan was long the largest country in Africa and, according to the general consensus, also one of the least successful in many ways. This was not entirely its fault since it lay along the fault line between Muslim and Christian Africa and between the Nile Valley civilizations and African Sudanic cultures. This partly explains the long and bloody warfare waged by the Southerners to achieve independence, which they did in July 2011. So this hefty book actually covers not one but two states. This fourth edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Sudan does so, first, through a lengthy and detailed chronology tracing its relatively few successes and numerous failures. The introductory essay does an admirable job of putting it all in perspective. But the most informative part is the dictionary, with now over 700 entries for this fourth edition. They deal with important personalities, politics, the economy, society, culture, religion and inevitably the civil war. There are also appendixes and an extensive bibliography.

Book excerpt: The Chronicle of Discovery and Conquest of Guinea in two volumes is a historical source which is considered the main authority for the early Portuguese voyages of discovery down the African coast and in the ocean, more especially for those undertaken under the auspices of Prince Henry the Navigator. The work is written by Portuguese chronicler Zurara and is serves as the principal historical source for modern conception of Prince Henry the Navigator and the Henrican age of Portuguese discoveries (although Zurara only covers part of it, the period 1434-1448). Zurara's chronicle is openly hagiographic of the prince and reliant on his recollections. It contains some account of the life work of that prince, and has a biographical as a geographical interest.

Smith was always intrigued by family stories told to her by her parents, grandparents, and close family friends. Birthed out of the intense desire of her mother (Shirley Mae LaVergne Williams) to discover more about her paternal roots, Leona set out on a journey to research her familys history and discovered some amazing truths about her ancestors. Told through family records and stories handed down through many generations and through the use of true to life accounts obtained from Federal Slave Narratives set in Louisiana, St. Landry Up From Slavery Then Came the Fire!! is an epic story deeply rooted in historical fact that spans over 300 years of the LaVergne and Williams families. From the shores of Africa to the rice fields of St. Landry Parish, Louisiana and beyond, St. Landry Up From Slavery Then Came the Fire! explores the hardships, struggles, defeats and triumphs endued by the families through the cruel injustices of slavery, classism and racism. Most importantly, it also explores the families resolute faith in God and gives documented accounts and firsthand testimonies of the amazing, miraculous power of God at work in their lives down through the generations that has left a legacy of hope, courage, and success that still endures today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Discovering Body Language (DBL): For Your EYES Only” is a classic; it gives a timeless message about the use of body language in different circumstances. The book surmises both the positive and negative messages that people portray through the course of conversation. The aim of this book is to sharpen your eyes to see the hidden. A lot of people do not know the signs of deception even if they are glaring and that is why such individuals fall prey of unwanted circumstances. If you make this book your companion, then it becomes your inner sight to have a thorough understanding of people’s thoughts and intents towards you. This book only discusses an aspect of the areas covered in The Encyclopedia of Body Language, a best-seller by the author. In the latter, the author holistically x-rayed all aspects of body language and readers can convert body language knowledge to profit. It is a book that sets captives of communication free. The greatest giveaway of this book is that you will know how to read body language effectively. The author does not offer limited knowledge here. Rather, he gives every reader the master key to make informed decisions by listening to the body language of their co-interlocutors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional economic theory studies idealized markets in which prices alone can guide efficient allocation, with no need for central organization. Such models build from Adam Smith’s famous concept of an invisible hand, which guides markets and renders regulation or interference largely unnecessary. Yet for many markets, prices alone are not enough to guide feasible and efficient outcomes, and regulation alone is not enough, either. Consider air traffic control at major airports. While prices could encourage airlines to take off and land at less congested times, prices alone do just part of the job; an air traffic control system is still indispensable to avoid disastrous consequences. With just an air traffic controller, however, limited resources can be wasted or poorly used. What’s needed in this and many other real-world cases is an auction system that can effectively reveal prices while still maintaining enough direct control to ensure that complex constraints are satisfied. In Discovering Prices, Paul Milgrom—the world’s most frequently cited academic expert on auction design—describes how auctions can be used to discover prices and guide efficient resource allocations, even when resources are diverse, constraints are critical, and market-clearing prices may not even exist. Economists have long understood that externalities and market power both necessitate market organization. In this book, Milgrom introduces complex constraints as another reason for market design. Both lively and technical, Milgrom roots his new theories in real-world examples (including the ambitious U.S. incentive auction of radio frequencies, whose design he led) and provides economists with crucial new tools for dealing with the world’s growing complex resource-allocation problems.
