Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the universe come into being? What is the nature of God? Of the human spirit? All who seek understanding will find this book an illuminating presentation of India's oldest and most profound religious and philosophical tradition. The Wisdom of the Vedas was first published in 1931 by Kailas Press under the title India's Outlook on Life. The Theosophical Publishing House published a second edition in 1973, and again in 1980 under the Quest imprint. The present 1992 edition was edited to reflect the modern use of inclusive language, and includes an introduction by Vedic scholar David Frawley. Mr. Frawley explains to the Western reader, "The Vedas are the original scripture or source teaching of the Hindu tradition, from which its many branches of Vedanta, Yoga, and Tantra have emerged through time, and to which they all look back with reverence." The Vedas are also "..the background relative to which the Buddhist religion evolved, and Buddhism also preserves many Vedic terms and practices." The study then, of the Vedas is important to understanding many different Eastern teachings. The author is from India, and has an unusual ability to frame the subtleties of Eastern thought for the Western world.

Book Synopsis The Jews of Britain, 1656 to 2000 by : Todd M. Endelman
Download or read book The Jews of Britain, 1656 to 2000 written by Todd M. Endelman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2002-03-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Todd Endelman's spare and elegant narrative, the history of British Jewry in the modern period is characterized by a curious mixture of prominence and inconspicuousness. British Jews have been central to the unfolding of key political events of the modern period, especially the establishment of the State of Israel, but inconspicuous in shaping the character and outlook of modern Jewry. Their story, less dramatic perhaps than that of other Jewish communities, is no less deserving of this comprehensive and finely balanced analytical account. Even though Jews were never completely absent from Britain after the expulsion of 1290, it was not until the mid- seventeenth century that a permanent community took root. Endelman devotes chapters to the resettlement; to the integration and acculturation that took place, more intensively than in other European states, during the eighteenth century; to the remarkable economic transformation of Anglo-Jewry between 1800 and 1870; to the tide of immigration from Eastern Europe between 1870 and 1914 and the emergence of unprecedented hostility to Jews; to the effects of World War I and the turbulent events up to and including the Holocaust; and to the contradictory currents propelling Jewish life in Britain from 1948 to the end of the twentieth century. We discover not only the many ways in which the Anglo-Jewish experience was unique but also what it had in common with those of other Western Jewish communities.
Book Synopsis Likkutei Dibburim by : Joseph Isaac Schneersohn
Download or read book Likkutei Dibburim written by Joseph Isaac Schneersohn and published by Kehot Publications Society. This book was released on 1987 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Likkutei Dibburim, a cherished treasure-chest of the Chabad Chasidic heritage, is a record of talks delivered by the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe in Latvia, Poland, and the United States during the years 1929 to 1950. It is a unique work - by turns expository, philosophical, narrative and nostalgic. The talks embrace an overwhelming range of subjects, from the Rebbe's memories of childhood and family to his eloquent and sometimes impassioned passages of exhortation. They include glimpses of faces and sounds that conjure up the mystique of a vanished shtetl world, delicately-drawn vignettes, fascinating chronicles of the early history of the Chasidic movement, and creative and instructive expositions of Chasidic concepts. One theme links all of these subjects like a thread of gold: the intense spiritual and personal bond with all his fellow Jews, that is of the essence of the very concept of Rebbe.
Book Synopsis Letters of Light by : Kalonymus Kalman Epstein
Download or read book Letters of Light written by Kalonymus Kalman Epstein and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-02-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters of Light is a translation of over ninety passages from a well-known Hasidic text, Ma'or va-shemesh, consisting of homilies of Kalonymus Kalman Epstein of Krakow, together with a running commentary and analysis by Aryeh Wineman. With remarkable creativity, the Krakow preacher recast biblical episodes and texts through the prism both of the pietistic values of Hasidism, with its accent on the inner life and the Divine innerness of all existence, and of his ongoing wrestling with questions of the primacy of the individual vis-a-vis that of the community. The commentary traces the route leading from the Torah-text itself through various later sources to the Krakow preacher's own reading of the biblical text, one that often transforms the very tenor of the text he was expounding. Though composed almost two centuries ago, Ma'or va-Shemesh comprises an impressive spiritual statement, many parts of which can speak to our own time and its spiritual strivings.
