Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses and Memoirs, Addressed to Young Women It may be as well to announce in the opening chapter that the whole course will be of a decidedly religious nature. For all' the general directions and excellences of female character, I shall refer to the various works which on these topics have issued from the pr'ess. Mv subject is religion, my object is the soul, my aim is sal vation. I View you, my female friends, as destined to another world, and it is my business to aid and stimulate you, by patient continuance in well-doing, to seek for glory, honour, and immortality, and to obtain eternal life. I look beyond the painted and gaudy scene of earth's fading vanities, to the everlasting ages through which you must exist in torment or bliss and, God helping me, it shall not be my fault if you do not live in comfort, die in peace, and inherit salvation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourse to Young Ladies Sermon In assuming to address you of the other sex, I feel some hesitation, because I lack in my own nature a woman's heart. It is not for one who cannot know from his own experience your peculiar emotions and sentiments, under all varieties of circumstances, to tell you the best things for your mission and your time. It needs that heart should speak to heart, and soul to soul. You must have a thousand suggestions of which we of the other sex are wholly Ignorant. It takes a like nature thoroughly to comprehend its like. Then I see that this grosser, ruder man's nature of mine, that comes forth out of the dust, cannot fully divine that gentler, rarer nature of yours, which did not so directly spring from the earth. Nor, perhaps, can I speak to you so very well or wisely of the influence of outward circumstances and conditions upon that more instinctive, more enduring nature, as when by birth, by education, by association, by fortune, by society, by rank, by station, by your own thoughts and feelings, purposes and desires, your character, example, influence, and action are all touched, swayed, controlled, and fixed in a thousand ways unknown to us. But then I can come as your brother, standing outside the tabernacle, and say some things to the spirit dwelling within. Peters The only striking peculiarities that marked her early years, now recollected by her friends, were quickness of temper, uncommon sprightliness of mind, great physical activity, and strong affections. In re lation to this period of -her life her mother remarks, She was full of animation and spirits. She walked, or rather ran alone, when eight months old; and after she had once gained the use of her feet, she was seldom off from them while awake. All her move; ments were rapid, and her activity beyond any thing I have ever witnessed. This activity invariably at tracted the notice of strangers it was of so restless and ceaseless a character, that some have supposed it induced disease, and was remotely the cause of her early and premature death. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Hyegyong's memoirs, which recount the chilling murder of her husband by his father, form one of the best known and most popular classics of Korean literature. From 1795 until 1805 Lady Hyegyong composed this masterpiece, depicting a court life Shakespearean in its pathos, drama, and grandeur. Presented in its social, cultural, and historical contexts, this first complete English translation opens a door into a world teeming with conflicting passions, political intrigue, and the daily preoccupations of a deeply intelligent and articulate woman. JaHyun Kim Haboush's accurate, fluid translation captures the intimate and expressive voice of this consummate storyteller. Reissued nearly twenty years after its initial publication with a new foreword by Dorothy Ko, The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong is a unique exploration of Korean selfhood and an extraordinary example of autobiography in the premodern era.

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller and one of 2019's best-reviewed books, a poetic memoir and call to action from the award-winning author of Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson! Bestselling author Laurie Halse Anderson is known for the unflinching way she writes about, and advocates for, survivors of sexual assault. Now, inspired by her fans and enraged by how little in our culture has changed since her groundbreaking novel Speak was first published twenty years ago, she has written a poetry memoir that is as vulnerable as it is rallying, as timely as it is timeless. In free verse, Anderson shares reflections, rants, and calls to action woven between deeply personal stories from her life that she's never written about before. Described as "powerful," "captivating," and "essential" in the nine starred reviews it's received, this must-read memoir is being hailed as one of 2019's best books for teens and adults. A denouncement of our society's failures and a love letter to all the people with the courage to say #MeToo and #TimesUp, whether aloud, online, or only in their own hearts, SHOUT speaks truth to power in a loud, clear voice-- and once you hear it, it is impossible to ignore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a period characterized by expanding markets, national consolidation, and social upheaval, print culture picked up momentum as the nineteenth century turned into the twentieth. Books, magazines, and newspapers were produced more quickly and more cheaply, reaching ever-increasing numbers of readers. Volume 4 of A History of the Book in America traces the complex, even contradictory consequences of these changes in the production, circulation, and use of print. Contributors to this volume explain that although mass production encouraged consolidation and standardization, readers increasingly adapted print to serve their own purposes, allowing for increased diversity in the midst of concentration and integration. Considering the book in larger social and cultural networks, essays address the rise of consumer culture, the extension of literacy and reading through schooling, the expansion of secondary and postsecondary education and the growth of the textbook industry, the growing influence of the professions and their dependence on print culture, and the history of relevant technology. As the essays here attest, the expansion of print culture between 1880 and 1940 enabled it to become part of Americans' everyday business, social, political, and religious lives.
