Book excerpt: This dissertation uses discourse analysis, specifically Longacre's discourse analysis model, for the interpretation of Ezek 40-48. It is found that the theme of holiness provides the key to understanding Ezek 40-48 and serves as the thread that makes the passage an integral part of the book. Maintaining God's holiness is the purpose for Ezekiel's final vision. To demonstrate the thesis, the study makes use of the complete dynamic process of discourse analysis: first from the parts up to the whole, then from the whole down to the parts. Chapter 2 analyzes the individual parts of Ezekiel to determine the macrostructure of the whole book. The connections between Ezek 40-48 and the rest of the book are then explored. Chapter 3 analyzes the parts of Ezek 40-48 to get the arrangement and purpose of the whole section. This chapter discusses how the theme of holiness is emphasized in the arrangement of Ezek 40-48. In chapter 4-7, after getting the overall arrangement of Ezek 40-48, four topics, namely the temple, priesthood, kingship and the land, are studied in detail. The theme of holiness manifested in the four topics is respectively investigated. This dissertation supports the integrity of the last nine chapters of Ezekiel and offers a new understanding of the text. First, the purpose of the final temple vision is not to provide a blueprint for the new temple, but to show the importance of holiness and provide the way for maintaining that holiness. Second, each part of Ezek 40-48 is held together by the theme of holiness to form an integrated unit. Third, the right way to worship God is to maintain God's holiness. When God's people are holy, God will be with them even when there is not a physical temple in the city (Ezek 48:35). This points to the eschatological view of the New Jerusalem, where the temple is not a physical entity but God himself (Rev 21).

In contrast, a number of human geographers have asserted that space, more than time, provides the most revealing insights into behavior. By giving priority to the geographical perspective in her study of Ezekiel 40-48, the author both clarifies aspects of the text which scholars have found problematic and demonstrates a provocative new methodology for biblical studies more generally. Ezekiel 40-48, according to the argument of this book, articulates a vision and rhetorical strategy for organizing a society according to a new set of spatial rules, in response to the experience of exile. "Territoriality," as here defined, is an effort to control access to social space in order to prevent a recurrence of the boundary violations that led to exile. This study will be of interest to students of Ezekiel, human geography, critical methodology, and rhetoric alike.

The author applies Skopostheorie, a modern functional theory of translation, to understand the goals of translation in LXX Ezekiel 40-48, which include highlighting the distance and hence authority of the source text, suggesting solutions to problems posed by the text, and updating elements of the vision in light of Hellenistic culture. The goal of the translation was both to preserve the authority and to heighten the persuasive power of these chapters for his Hellenistic readers" --

Book excerpt: Ezekiel's prophecy was written 400 BC and was fulfilled in our time exactly as it was written;however, God sealed this prophecy until it was revealed to me and shared in this book. God put His will in the hearts and minds of His chosen people and they did everything according to His will. Ezekiel's prophecy and many others tell us that the Bible is the word of God, written by God, and we can trust every word in the Bible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Revelation 21-22, John offered a resplendent portrayal of a new Jerusalem without a temple, in which he seemed to reference the final chapters of Ezekiel. The puzzling issue for interpreters is why John chose to utilize Ezekiel's temple vision if he wanted to dispense with the temple. Andrea Robinson delves into the complex relationship between these two visions of heaven and earth, examining parallels between Revelation 21-22 and Ezekiel 40-48. In the process, Robinson also explores a variety of apocalyptic works from the Second Temple period to determine the tenor of thought in regard to the concepts of the temple and the messiah in John's day. Ultimately, she helps readers understand how John utilizes Ezekiel's imagery to portray Jesus Christ as the eschatological temple--the place where heaven and earth unite. By uncovering how original hearers would have understood John's visions, Robinson's insightful study helps modern readers appropriate the same hope of a glorious future with the Messiah.

Along with certain other key passages of the Old Testament, like Isaiah 7:14 and 52:13-53:12 and portions of Daniel, the concluding chapters of Ezekiel form a kind of continental divide in the area of Biblical interpretation. It is one of the areas where the literal interpretation of the Bible and the spiritualizing or allegorizing method diverge widely.

Book excerpt: In this original study, Dr Davis argues that Ezekiel's place in the history of prophecy is overdue for reassessment. As against current views that Ezekiel represents the collapse of prophetism into priestly and scribal forms, she argues that something radically different in prophecy begins with Ezekiel. Ezekiel represents the creation of a new literary idiom for prophecy. He develops an archival speech form oriented less toward current events than to reshaping the tradition. He has taken a step backward from direct confrontation with an audience as the basic dynamic of communication, and has made the medium of prophecy not the person of the prophet but the text. Like the postexilic prophets, Ezekiel participated in the transformation of the social role of prophecy, and thereby saved himself from oblivion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyses the book of Ezekiel as a tool of communication, arguing that the book was designed to shape the self-understanding of the exilic community. A discussion of the historical context precedes a chapter that deals with the basic thrust and literary arrangement of Ezekiel. A detailed examination of individual rhetorical techniques (use of the watchman motif, legal traditions, emotional language, and others) and of crucial passages (especially 24:15-27 and 37:1-14) follows. The final chapter explores the book's suitability for the situation for which it was designed. This work gives readers the opportunity to study the book of Ezekiel as a whole and to explore some of its intricacies. Its methodology is an example of the fruitful integration of traditional critical methods and more recent literary and sociological approaches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ezekiel is a transitional character writing in times of dramatic change. A priest without a temple, called to the prophetic office; an exile without a country, writing to his fellow exiles; a public figure for a while without a voice, Ezekiel composes a magnum opus that touched the hearts and minds of his generation and a work that continues to speak of the power and love of God more than two thousand years later. Steven Tuell has captured the breadth and depth of the man and his profound recognition of the power and grace of God for a disenfranchised community. He has provided clear understanding of a complex book of the Bible that many in the past have found confusing and murky. He clarifies the theological underpinnings of the text and brings the brilliance of this book into the light. His explanation of the visionary closing chapters of the book that center on a new nation and a new center of worship is cogent and clear. The New International Biblical Commentary offers the best of contemporary scholarship in a format that both general readers and serious students can use with profit. Based on the widely used New International Version translation, the NIBC presents careful section-by-section exposition with key terms and phrases highlighted and all Hebrew transliterated. A separate section of notes at the close of each chapter provides additional textual and technical comments. Each commentary also includes a selected bibliography as well as Scripture and subject indexes.
