An effort has been made to present in a concrete way the various steps that may be taken to establish a wholesome school "spirit" that will reduce disciplinary difficulties to a minimum. To this end, most of the chapters deal rather with positive and non-coercive than with restrictive and repressive methods of treatment. By way of introduction, the essential characteristics of a well-disciplined school are described, and the problem of creating these conditions is stated. The unruly or disorderly school is then assumed; the various causes which lead to disorder are analyzed; and the steps that may be taken to transform the situation are discussed in detail with as many typical concrete illustrations as the limitations of space permit. Coercive measures are treated briefly, following the discussion of the positive measures. An attempt has been made to outline the evolution of the idea of punishment as a coercive agency; and the different types of penalties commonly employed in the school are described and evaluated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art of Class Management and Discipline There are many works on school management that present the theory of school order and control from the point of view of the principal or superintendent. The pedagogical student learns in her normal or training school all about school virtues and motives. She is made acquainted with systematic treatises on the theory of school government. But after she has graduated and has come face to face with a class of mischievous boys, the theories that seemed so reasonable before are now strangely impotent. She finds that she is confronted by a condition, not a theory. Class management is an art and a fine art at that. An art must be acquired by practice; and if one would make rapid progress and avoid errors, a teacher is necessary. This little book is intended as a slight contribution to the art of class discipline. It is offered to that hapless young woman who is just beginning to teach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Discipline of the School Ir was not the daring of my own spirit which first conceived the idea of practically denying an old pedagogic maxim which says that, given lessons well taught, the order of a school will take care of itself. Neither was I the first to gainsay the truth of the cheerful superstition that no specific help upon questions of discipline may be given a teacher; that each situation, as it presents itself, must be met in the light of certain general principles which are doubtless very sound, but which do not always readily come to mind in the nick of time. Nevertheless these new doctrines met a ready response from one to whom experience and observation have combined to show that the management of behavior is in itself a definite phase of school work, and a definite problem to be solved; and that fairly concrete means of achieving good results may be passed from one teacher to another, as truly as a concrete manner of teaching a geography lesson may be taught one teacher by another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of School Discipline, Vol. 1 In attempting to present a subjective treatment of School Discipline, I am aware that I undertake an ambitious task. - It involves in my case the necessity of laying down the postulates of a new science, as it were, and erecting thereon a structure symmetrical in form, and strong in the fitness and completeness of its parts. As I am not acquainted with any previous attempt to formulate the elements and principles of what I regard as the science of School Discipline, I have been compelled to arrange and give names to the divisions and classifications occurring in the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rationale of Discipline: As Exemplified in the High School of Edinburgh Much has been written on the right training of youth, from the days of Plato and Quintilian down to the present time. The age at which a boys education should begin - what he should learn, and in what order - what should be taught to all, and what reserved for particular classes and professions - what portion of the religious element should enter into the course of instruction - whether a public or private education should be preferred, - are questions which have long divided both the speculations of philosophers and the practice of parents. But the actual details of school management and discipline have rarely been communicated to the world. No sooner is a boy committed to the charge of a domestic tutor or of a public teacher, than the scene closes, and little is heard of what passes, till he come forth in due time more or less of a scholar or a dunce. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Formal Discipline And the result on the side of education, both in theory and practice, is apparent, Any subject which exercises the stu dent is as good as any other, or, if there is any difference, it is one of degree. The remoteness of the subject from the life which the student is to follow is of no importance, whether this remoteness relates to the subject matter, the method of getting that subject matter, or the accomplishment effected by the study. Though one were to be a Christian in adult life in morals and religion, the study of pagan literature was as generally helpful in that direction as the study of Jewish literature, for after all it gave the general things called culture, outlook, The same was held to be true of history, so that even yet modern history occupies a very subordinate place, if any at all, in most of the high schools, which are thinking more especially of the mental development of the student as opposed to the college which has more nearly in mind the nearness of practical life, Indeed, the great argument for the classics, for geometry, for algebra, in the older courses, and later for the introduction of botany, physics and astronomy, and still later for drawing, nature study and manual training, has been in more or less explicit form the dogma of formal discipline, z'. E., that each of these are generally helpful to the mind as such, or, one grade removed from this, are productive of ready memory, keen per ception, accurate reason, lively imagination. Such words or phrases as intellectual power, moral training, mental force, fibre, taste, character, disposition are the ends of school training. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Drawing upon new research in psychology, education, and cognitive science, the authors have demystified a complex topic into clear explanations of seven powerful learning principles. Full of great ideas and practical suggestions, all based on solid research evidence, this book is essential reading for instructors at all levels who wish to improve their students' learning." —Barbara Gross Davis, assistant vice chancellor for educational development, University of California, Berkeley, and author, Tools for Teaching "This book is a must-read for every instructor, new or experienced. Although I have been teaching for almost thirty years, as I read this book I found myself resonating with many of its ideas, and I discovered new ways of thinking about teaching." —Eugenia T. Paulus, professor of chemistry, North Hennepin Community College, and 2008 U.S. Community Colleges Professor of the Year from The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education "Thank you Carnegie Mellon for making accessible what has previously been inaccessible to those of us who are not learning scientists. Your focus on the essence of learning combined with concrete examples of the daily challenges of teaching and clear tactical strategies for faculty to consider is a welcome work. I will recommend this book to all my colleagues." —Catherine M. Casserly, senior partner, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching "As you read about each of the seven basic learning principles in this book, you will find advice that is grounded in learning theory, based on research evidence, relevant to college teaching, and easy to understand. The authors have extensive knowledge and experience in applying the science of learning to college teaching, and they graciously share it with you in this organized and readable book." —From the Foreword by Richard E. Book excerpt: THE KEY TO DISCIPLINE IS NOT PUNISHMENT, BUT MUTUAL RESPECT All parents try to do their best--but the best of intentions don't always produce the best results. Dr. Jane Nelsen, an experienced psychologist, educator, and mother, believes that children misbehave when they feel thwarted in their need to belong and in their need for love and attention. An authoritative approach, using phrases like " Because I said so!" , will only lead to rebellious behavior. Instead, parents need basic principles that bring them and their children closer. They need Positive Discipline. Dr. Nelsen explains that parents who use kindness and firmness to teach life skills will encourage self-respect, self-discipline, cooperation, good behavior, and problem-solving skills in their children. In Positive Discipline, revised and updated for the '90s, she shows all of us, parents and teachers alike, exactly how her practical program works--answering, step-by-step, such important questions as: *What works better than punishment to teach children positive, good behavior? *What mistakes do most parents make " in the name of love" ? *How can parents turn their mistakes into assets? *How can praise be dangerous? *What are the dangers of trying to be " Super Mom" ? *How can teachers avoid discipline problems in the classroom? " It is positive! It works! It saves your sanity! And it is easy to share with others." --Julie Pope, Parent Sacramento, CA " As a parent and psychotherapist, I have found enormous value and practical wisdom in Positive Discipline. It conveys a win/win atmosphere for parents and children. The techniques are so easy tolearn and fun to use...Anyone following these concepts will see almost instant results and big smiles on the faces of their children." --Katherine Dusay, Psychotherapist San Francisco, CA
