Book excerpt: What does it mean to be part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)? A denomination that intentionally unites Christians who have different ideas about what it means to be Christian is bound to struggle to agree on its core values and beliefs — but respected Disciples Michael Kinnamon and Jan Linn believe unity is possible through reforming worship, relationships, and mission. A timely update of their landmark book, Disciples identifies common ground and continues the conversation started by Stone and Campbell two centuries ago on the American frontier.

Book Synopsis Love Like Jesus: How Jesus Loved People (and how you can love like Jesus) by : Kurt Bennett
Download or read book Love Like Jesus: How Jesus Loved People (and how you can love like Jesus) written by Kurt Bennett and published by Enoch Media. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on Kurt Bennett's popular-ish blog God Running, Love Like Jesus begins with the story of how after a life of regular church attendance and Bible study, Bennett was challenged by a pastor to study Jesus. That led to an obsessive seven-year deep dive. After pouring over Jesus' every interaction with another human being, he realized he was doing a much better job of studying Jesus' words than he was following Jesus' words and example. The honest and fearless revelations of Bennett's own moral failures affirm he wrote this book for himself as much as for others. Love Like Jesus examines a variety of stories, examples, and research, including: -Specific examples of how Jesus communicated God's love to others. -How Jesus demonstrated all five of Gary Chapman's love languages (and how you can too). -The story of how Billy Graham extended Christ's extraordinary love and grace toward a man who misrepresented Jesus to millions. -How to respond to critics the way Jesus did. -How to love unlovable people the way Jesus did. -How to survive a life of loving like Jesus (or how not to become a Christian doormat). -How Jesus didn't love everyone the same (and why you shouldn't either). -How Jesus guarded his heart by taking care of himself--he even napped--and why you should do the same.-How Jesus loved his betrayer Judas, even to the very end. With genuine unfiltered honesty, Love Like Jesus, shows you how to live a life according to God's definition of success: A life of loving God well, and loving the people around you well too. A life of loving like Jesus.

Book Synopsis The Imperfect Disciple by : Jared C. Wilson
Download or read book The Imperfect Disciple written by Jared C. Wilson and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too many discipleship books are written for clean, perfect people who know all the right Sunday school answers. The Imperfect Disciple is for the rest of us--people who screw up, people who are weary, people who are wondering if it's safe to say what they're really thinking. For the believer who is tired of quasi-spiritual lifehacks being passed off as true, down-and-dirty discipleship, here is a discipleship book that isn't afraid to be honest about the mess we call real life. With incisive wit, warm humor, and moving stories, Jared Wilson shows readers how the gospel works in them and in their lives when - they can't get their act together - they think God is giving them the silent treatment - they think church would be better without all the people - they're not happy with the person in the mirror - and much more Wilson frees readers from the self-doubt and even the misplaced self-confidence they may feel as they walk with Jesus down the often difficult road of life. The result is a faith that weathers storms, lifts burdens, and goes forth to make more imperfect disciples.

Serving parishes in her diocese as the Director of New Evangelization, Stanz has recognized a practical and motivational way to restructure a parish's mission – start with Jesus. She aims to help regular people be transformed from the inside out by growing in relationship with Jesus Christ through individual and group experiences, thus transforming our parish communities. Start with Jesus will be an essential resource for decision-makers and thought-leaders in parishes, but its true strength lies in its value for the countless Catholics longing for peace, healing, and hope in the context of our parish communities. It will be an inspiration to Catholics who come to Mass each week, parents trying to instill the faith in their children, leaders searching for an effective and sustainable approach to parish renewal, and to all who are curious about developing a relationship with Jesus.
Book Synopsis Making Disciples by : Sylvia Wilkey Collinson
Download or read book Making Disciples written by Sylvia Wilkey Collinson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian faith community regards the making of disciples as a prime directive of Jesus himself, though this theme is not dominant in contemporary models of teaching in the church. This investigation seeks to develop a theory of discipling and to test its congruence as an effective educational strategy with the objectives of modern Christian faith communities. After briefly examining the discipling model of teaching as practiced in the world of the Ancient Near East, a detailed study of New Testament texts investigates the practice of discipling by Jesus and his followers and in the church of the first century. An understanding of the concept of discipling is gained by gradually refining its definition as the study progresses through a contemporary examination of other informal models of education. Religious and educational research findings are explored to enable the validity of the discipling model to be determined. Finally, the definition is used as a benchmark to examine various contemporary educational theories within the community of faith. In contrast to the schooling model, discipling has been shown to be an effective model for teaching attitudes, values, and behavior as well as knowledge and beliefs in today's church. Its emphasis on commitment to learning relationships within a nurturing community and active involvement in the mission of Christ to the world, and its capacity to adapt to differences in age, culture, ability, and interests, make it a model of teaching worthy of much greater attention by the Christian faith community.
Book Synopsis Making Disciples Across Cultures by : Charles A. Davis
Download or read book Making Disciples Across Cultures written by Charles A. Davis and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture affects how we make disciples. We often unconsciously bring our own cultural assumptions into ministry and mission, not realizing that how we think and operate is not necessarily the best or only way to do things. In today's global environment, disciplemaking requires the cultural humility and flexibility to adapt between different cultural approaches. Charles Davis, former director of TEAM, provides a framework for missional disciplemaking across diverse cultural contexts. He shows how we can recalibrate our ministry efforts, like adjusting sound levels on a mixer board, to accommodate different cultural assumptions. With on-the-ground stories from a lifetime of mission experience, Davis navigates such tensions as knowledge and behavior, individualism and collectivism, and truth and works to help Christian workers minister more effectively. Ministry teams, church planters, pastors and missionaries working interculturally at home or overseas can be part of God's movement of making disciples. Discover how the body of Christ grows in the unity and diversity of the global church.

Book Synopsis The Twelve Chosen Disciples by : Ian Fleck
Download or read book The Twelve Chosen Disciples written by Ian Fleck and published by Ambassador International. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christians are unable to give the names, or many details, of Jesus’ twelve disciples and yet we can learn many lessons from their lives. Each of them had his own personality but Jesus was able to change and use them in the service of the Kingdom of God. They had faults like we do. They were a mixed bunch of people, each with their own gifts and struggles. God calls all sorts of people, and we cannot forget that Jesus was selecting men for a leadership role in the early church. We can use the example of the apostles to inspire and teach us. This is a tremendously useful book that will have a place on many a minister’s bookshelf. From Andrew through to Judas, Ian Fleck’s survey is detailed but accessible and never dry. This is a timely book, coming at a time when many in the church are speaking of the need for discipleship, yet, all too often, little or nothing is ever said of the first disciples. This book opens up their lives to us. Rev. Dr. Paul Bailie Chief Executive, Mission Africa (Working in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Chad and Kenya) Inspired by material concerning the Twelve disciples which he has assembled from the Four Gospels, and in interaction with other Scripture texts and some ancient traditions, Ian Fleck in this series of meditations has succeeded in deriving, from the lives of Jesus’ choses followers, challenging, inspirational and practical lessons for readers to apply in discipleship of Christ today. Rev Dr. Gordon Campbell Professor of New Testament, Union Theological College, Belfast
Book Synopsis Becoming a Parish of Intentional Disciples by : Sherry A. Weddell, Editor
Download or read book Becoming a Parish of Intentional Disciples written by Sherry A. Weddell, Editor and published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is not the same thing to have known Jesus as not to have known him, not the same thing to walk with him as to walk blindly, not the same thing to hear his word as not to know it.... We know that with Jesus life becomes richer."-Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel In her first book, Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus, Sherry Weddell, cofounder of the Catherine of Siena Institute, captured the attention of Catholics across the globe as she uncovered the life-changing power that accompanies the conscious decision to follow Jesus as his disciple. Now, in the groundbreaking Becoming a Parish of Intentional Disciples, she has gathered together experienced leaders and collaborators whose exceptional field-tested wisdom and enthusiasm for transforming Catholic parishes into centers of discipleship and apostolic outreach is both inspiring and practical. The authors consider: The role of intercessory prayer in parish transformation How "fireside chats" can help a pastor connect with his parishioners and call them to personal discipleship and mission The co-responsibility of lay people andpastors in the work of making disciples The revolutionary impact of a discipleship approach to youth ministry How one parish successfully fostered a culture of intentional discipleship, and much more As Sherry asks in her own chapter, "Are we willing to answer the call and pay the price necessary to become a new generation of saints through which God can do extraordinary things in our time?"
