Book excerpt: Young Dr. Paul Allan Kelly traveled many times to southern Texas on vacations, developing such a passion for the region and its people that he eventually moved to Treasure, Texas, to practice medicine. With his floppy straw hat, crazy bib overalls, and love for his Harley motorcycle, Kelly was a bit unorthodox as a small town's only doctor. What he lacked in appearance, he made up for in character. He championed the rights of the people in the small, farming community, and he was obsessed with a desire to change the oppressive slum conditions and poverty of the Mexican American people living here. He stressed the need for greater politically representations in their communities and the importance of voting and participating in the political programs. But some people in powerful positions in this county believed Kelly was a troublemaker. After only three years in practice, Kelly was shot and killed under suspicious circumstances by Deputy Sheriff Billy Joe Smith. Though justice was never achieved in the court system, some of those responsible for Kelly's death paid the price.

Book excerpt: This heartbreaking story starts in a place called the criminal circle where you will meet those who will capture you, judge you and then sentence you under the laws of Street Justice. It follows Taylor and Dogg two young handsome men on a perilous journey from Texas to New York meeting many characters such as Elephant Man, Sugar Daddy and Reverend Omar among many others. It is not an easy story to tell because of the pain, suffering and bloodshed that remind us of the terrifying events that are happening in our neighborhoods every day.

Book excerpt: After the world narrowly avoids World War III, F.B.I. agent Mark Tice turns to politics in his search for justice. Mark comes from a past that is gradually revealed in periodic visits to the catacombs of St. Jude's Cathedral. Politics, crime, terrorism, greed, corruption and their counterparts dominate the present as Mark travels a parallel journey in unexplained visions revealing similar circumstances in the fall of all the great Empires of old. Mark struggles with the problems of the present in fear that the evils of the past are following in the shadows, possibly in the form of those he considers friends. On his lonely journey Mark meets Jennifer Hewitt, who is the reincarnation of his love from a time and place whose existence is in question. Jennifer's family becomes the center of his life's quest. As political success grows an important question must be answered. The appearance of police brutality and corruption is the focus, but how legitimate are the complaints? Jennifer's brother Tony is a rookie police officer, who gives life to the world of law enforcement. Terrorism, political correctness, liberal forces and greedy businessmen jeopardize the stability of the country. A select, somewhat clandestine group, debate these problems on several visits to the Hewitt household. Suspicious deaths and disappearances of prominent people cause great concern throughout the country. Mark and those close to him fear a plot revealed on the grave of a police officer killed by terrorists has been put in motion. Mark needs to find a just society, while some of those close to him want a society of their own making. The consensus is the final result will be Street Justice. If justice and security are not found within the confines of the law, justice must be administered on the streets. Governments must be strong in order to keep justice on the side of right. When governments fail to protect the law-abiding, there is no law, no security and no justice. This is the story line, but the point I am trying to get across is that the failures of the past are becoming evident in the present and making the future predictable.

Book excerpt: In a world where those at the top seem to constantly get away with murder, often quite literally, where white collar crime is punished with a mere slap on the wrist or more often than not just swept under the rug, wouldn't it be nice to see at least some form of punishment meted out? Street Justice poses one of those big what if questions that lurk in the back of our minds. What would we like to see happen to that murderer when he's caught? What if those muggers chose the wrong person to steal from and got a severe beating for their troubles? Now imagine if one day the government decided to do something about it, a token gesture at least, and offer the choice between thirty years behind bars for playing a role in crashing the stock market, or thirty days seeing how the other half, in this case, the homeless. What with overcrowding in prisons as it is, as well as public resentment at having to pay their taxes for people like that to serve a shortened sentence in an open prison watching TV, getting three meals a day when ordinary folk rely on food banks, wouldn't it make more sense to give them a much shorter, but much harsher sentence sleeping out in the cold, eating out of rubbish bins, etc? Based on trust, in this scenario there would be no need for walls, barbed wire, armed guards, etc, only an independent film maker and his crew, moderate government funding and a team of three genuinely homeless men with drug and alcohol issues to run the show. What could possibly go wrong? Heaven forbid it ever did and word were to get out, the whole thing might just be swept under the rug, all footage of the event seized, never to see the light of day ever again. But what if, just if, a transcript of the recorded material still existed? Now imagine those shameless champagne guzzling, tax avoiding, let them eat cake boys getting the only real justice they deserve. Street Justice!

Book excerpt: The true story of the most despicable political prosecution in American military history—in the book that won a presidential pardon. On the morning of July 2, 2012, in the most dangerous warzone in the world, Lieutenant Clint Lorance took command of his small band of American paratroopers at the spearhead of the American War in Afghanistan. Intelligence reports that morning warned of a Taliban ambush against Lorance’s platoon. Fifteen minutes into their patrol, three military-age Afghan males crowded on a motorcycle and sped aggressively down a Taliban-controlled dirt road toward Lorance’s men… Three weeks earlier, outside the massive American Kandahar Airfield, Taliban terrorists struck by motorcycle, riding into a crowded area, detonating body-bombs and killing twenty-two people. Sixty-three days before that, three Ohio National Guard soldiers were murdered in another motorcycle-suicide bombing. Suicide-by-motorcycle had become a common Taliban murder-tactic against Americans… It was a split-second decision: Either open fire and protect his men or ignore the speeding motorcycle and pray his men weren’t about to get blown up. Lorance ordered his men to fire. When no weapons were found on the Afghan bodies, the Army betrayed one of its finest young officers and prosecuted Lorance for murder. Hiding crucial evidence from the military jury and ordering Lorance’s own men to testify against him or face murder charges themselves, the Army railroaded Lorance into a 20-year prison sentence at Fort Leavenworth. Updated with breaking news, plus a copy of the pardon! “Gripping…. A true-life thriller... [a] page-turner.”—The Baltimore Sun “This one will keep you planted in your reading chair from start to finish.”—Sun-Sentinel

The Mother of all Eating, a one-hander, with its central character a corrupt Lesotho official, is a grinding satire on materialism in which the protagonist gets his come-uppance. You Fool, How Can the Sky Fall? is an unbridled study in grotesquerie, reflecting a belief, traceable throughout Mda's work, that government by those who inherit a revolution is almost inevitably, in the first decade or two, hi-jacked by the smart operators. The Bells of Amersfoort, with its graphic portrayal of the isolation imposed by exile, picks up on the themes of the other two plays but adds to them the concept of 'healing', both of the soul and of the land, in a lyrical work which holds out more hope than do its companions in this volume. The plays are introduced by Rob Amato, who directed much of Mda's earlier work.

Book excerpt: The Democratic Party left rural America behind. This urgent rallying cry shows how Democrats can win back and empower overlooked communities that have been pushing politics to the right—and why long-term progressive political power depends on it. Through 2 successful elections in rural red districts that few thought could be won by a Democrat, twentysomethings Maine state senator Chloe Maxmin (D-District 13) and campaign manager Canyon Woodward saw how the Democratic Party has focused for too long on the interests of elite leaders and big donors, forcing the party to abandon the concerns of rural America—jeopardizing climate justice, racial equity, economic justice, and more. Dirt Road Revival looks at how we got here and lays out a road map for progressive campaigns in rural America to build an inclusive, robust, grassroots politics that fights for equity and justice across our country. First, Maxmin and Woodward detail how rural America has been left behind. They explore rural healthcare, economic struggle, brain drain, aging communities, whiteness and racism, education access, broadband, Big Agriculture, and more. Drawing on their own experiences, they paint a picture of rural America today and pinpoint the strategic failures of Democrats that have caused the party to lose its rural foothold. Next, they tell the story of their successful campaigns in the most rural county in the most rural state in the nation. In 2018, Maxmin became the only Democrat to ever win Maine House District 88 and then unseated the highest-ranking Republican in Maine —the Senate Minority Leader—in 2020, making her the youngest woman senator in Maine’s history. Finally, Maxmin and Woodward distill their experiences into concrete lessons that can be applied to rural districts across the country to build power from the state and local levels on up. They lay out a new long-term vision for Democrats to rebuild trust and win campaigns in rural America by translating progressive values to a rural context, moving beyond the failed strategies of establishment consultants and utilizing grassroots-movement organizing strategies to effectively engage moderate rural voters.
