This book was released on 1992-12-18 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor J Dirk Walecka has made significant and lasting contributions to the field of nuclear physics. His work on many-body theory and electron scattering from nuclei profoundly influenced the direction of research in electromagnetic nuclear physics. His formulation of semileptonic weak interactions with nuclei introduced many nuclear physicists to the 'standard model' and the concept of the nucleus as a 'laboratory' for studying fundamental interactions. His development of meson-baryon field theories for nuclear systems ('quantum hadrodynamics') initiated novel research on relativistic effects in nuclei, high-density nuclear matter, and applications of field-theoretic techniques to the nuclear many-body problem. This proceedings focusses on three major areas of Professor Walecka's research: many-body theory, electroweak interactions in nuclei and relativistic nuclear physics. The topics discussed cover a broad and interesting range in condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, high-energy physics and cosmology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains the text of the invited talks delivered at the Eighth International Conference on Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories held at SchloB Seggau, Province of Styria, Austria, during the period August 22-26, 1994. The pro ceedings of the Fifth Conference (Oulu, Finland 1987), the Sixth Conference (Arad, Israel 1989) and the Seventh Conference (Minneapolis, USA 1991) have been published. by Plenum as the first three volumes of this series. Papers from the First Conference (Trieste, Italy 1978) comprise Nuclear Physics volume A328, Nos. 1 and 2, the Second Conference (Oaxtepec, Mexico 1979) was published by Springer-Verlag as volume 142 of "Lecture Notes in Physics," entitled "Recent Progress in Many Body Theories." Vol ume 198 of the same series contains the papers from the Third Conference (Altenberg, 1983). These volumes intend to cover a broad spectrum of current research topics in physics that benefit from the application of many-body theories for their elucidation. At the same time there is a focus on the development and refinement of many-body methods. One of the major aims of the conference series has been to foster the exchange of ideas among physicists working in such diverse areas as nuclear physics, quantum chemistry, complex systems, lattice Hamiltonians, quantum fluids and condensed matter physics. The present volume contains contributions from all these areas. th The conference was dedicated on the occasion of Ludwig Boltzmann's 150 birthday.

Book excerpt: In view of the rapid growth in both experimental and theoretical studies of multiphoton processes and multiphoton spectroscopy of atoms, ions and molecules in many interdisciplinary fields, an Advanced Series that contains review papers readable not only to active researchers in these areas but also to those who are not experts in the field but intend to enter the field is very necessary. This series attempts to serve this purpose. Each review article is written in a self-contained manner by the experts in the area so that the readers can grasp the knowledge in the area without too much preparation. The collection of topics in this volume will prove useful, valuable and stimulating not only to active researchers but also to other scientists in the areas of biology, chemistry, materials science and physics.
