Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric Function Theory is a central part of Complex Analysis (one complex variable). The Handbook of Complex Analysis - Geometric Function Theory deals with this field and its many ramifications and relations to other areas of mathematics and physics. The theory of conformal and quasiconformal mappings plays a central role in this Handbook, for example a priori-estimates for these mappings which arise from solving extremal problems, and constructive methods are considered. As a new field the theory of circle packings which goes back to P. Koebe is included. The Handbook should be useful for experts as well as for mathematicians working in other areas, as well as for physicists and engineers.· A collection of independent survey articles in the field of GeometricFunction Theory · Existence theorems and qualitative properties of conformal and quasiconformal mappings · A bibliography, including many hints to applications in electrostatics, heat conduction, potential flows (in the plane)

Book excerpt: The Encyclopaedia of Mathematics is the most up-to-date, authoritative and comprehensive English-language work of reference in mathematics which exists today. With over 7,000 articles from `A-integral' to `Zygmund Class of Functions', supplemented with a wealth of complementary information, and an index volume providing thorough cross-referencing of entries of related interest, the Encyclopaedia of Mathematics offers an immediate source of reference to mathematical definitions, concepts, explanations, surveys, examples, terminology and methods. The depth and breadth of content and the straightforward, careful presentation of the information, with the emphasis on accessibility, makes the Encyclopaedia of Mathematics an immensely useful tool for all mathematicians and other scientists who use, or are confronted by, mathematics in their work. The Enclyclopaedia of Mathematics provides, without doubt, a reference source of mathematical knowledge which is unsurpassed in value and usefulness. It can be highly recommended for use in libraries of universities, research institutes, colleges and even schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most conformal invariants can be described in terms of extremal properties. Conformal invariants and extremal problems are therefore intimately linked and form together the central theme of this classic book which is primarily intended for students with approximately a year's background in complex variable theory. The book emphasizes the geometric approach as well as classical and semi-classical results which Lars Ahlfors felt every student of complex analysis should know before embarking on independent research. At the time of the book's original appearance, much of this material had never appeared in book form, particularly the discussion of the theory of extremal length. Schiffer's variational method also receives special attention, and a proof of $\vert a_4\vert \leq 4$ is included which was new at the time of publication. The last two chapters give an introduction to Riemann surfaces, with topological and analytical background supplied to support a proof of the uniformization theorem. Included in this new reprint is a Foreword by Peter Duren, F. W. Gehring, and Brad Osgood, as well as an extensive errata. ... encompasses a wealth of material in a mere one hundred and fifty-one pages. Its purpose is to present an exposition of selected topics in the geometric theory of functions of one complex variable, which in the author's opinion should be known by all prospective workers in complex analysis. From a methodological point of view the approach of the book is dominated by the notion of conformal invariant and concomitantly by extremal considerations. ... It is a splendid offering. --Reviewed for Math Reviews by M. H. Heins in 1975

Book excerpt: We study the boundary behaviour of a conformal map of the unit disk onto an arbitrary simply connected plane domain. A principal aim of the theory is to obtain a one-to-one correspondence between analytic properties of the function and geometrie properties of the domain. In the classical applications of conformal mapping, the domain is bounded by a piecewise smooth curve. In many recent applications however, the domain has a very bad boundary. It may have nowhere a tangent as is the case for Julia sets. Then the conformal map has many unexpected properties, for instance almost all the boundary is mapped onto almost nothing and vice versa. The book is meant for two groups of users. (1) Graduate students and others who, at various levels, want to learn about conformal mapping. Most sections contain exercises to test the understand ing. They tend to be fairly simple and only a few contain new material. Pre requisites are general real and complex analyis including the basic facts about conformal mapping (e.g. AhI66a). (2) Non-experts who want to get an idea of a particular aspect of confor mal mapping in order to find something useful for their work. Most chapters therefore begin with an overview that states some key results avoiding tech nicalities. The book is not meant as an exhaustive survey of conformal mapping. Several important aspects had to be omitted, e.g. numerical methods (see e.g.

Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the theory of quasiconformal and quasiregular mappings in the euclidean n-dimensional space, (where n is greater than 2). There are many ways to develop this theory as the literature shows. The authors' approach is based on the use of metrics, in particular conformally invariant metrics, which will have a key role throughout the whole book. The intended readership consists of mathematicians from beginning graduate students to researchers. The prerequisite requirements are modest: only some familiarity with basic ideas of real and complex analysis is expected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the theory of spatial quasiregular mappings intended for the uninitiated reader. At the same time the book also addresses specialists in classical analysis and, in particular, geometric function theory. The text leads the reader to the frontier of current research and covers some most recent developments in the subject, previously scatterd through the literature. A major role in this monograph is played by certain conformal invariants which are solutions of extremal problems related to extremal lengths of curve families. These invariants are then applied to prove sharp distortion theorems for quasiregular mappings. One of these extremal problems of conformal geometry generalizes a classical two-dimensional problem of O. Teichmüller. The novel feature of the exposition is the way in which conformal invariants are applied and the sharp results obtained should be of considerable interest even in the two-dimensional particular case. This book combines the features of a textbook and of a research monograph: it is the first introduction to the subject available in English, contains nearly a hundred exercises, a survey of the subject as well as an extensive bibliography and, finally, a list of open problems.

Book excerpt: This is the first systematic presentation of the capacitory approach and symmetrization in the context of complex analysis. The content of the book is original – the main part has not been covered by existing textbooks and monographs. After an introduction to the theory of condenser capacities in the plane, the monotonicity of the capacity under various special transformations (polarization, Gonchar transformation, averaging transformations and others) is established, followed by various types of symmetrization which are one of the main objects of the book. By using symmetrization principles, some metric properties of compact sets are obtained and some extremal decomposition problems are solved. Moreover, the classical and present facts for univalent and multivalent meromorphic functions are proven. This book will be a valuable source for current and future researchers in various branches of complex analysis and potential theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathematics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical En cyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977 - 1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivision has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathe matics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, engineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.
