Book excerpt: This book examines the state of strategic communication as a discipline and how it has emerged as a unique area of scholarship in the beginning of the 21st century. Strategic communication encompasses all communication that is substantial for the survival and sustained success of entities like corporations, governments, non-profits, social movements, and celebrities. A major aspect of the field is the purposeful use of communication by an organization to engage in conversations of strategic significance to its goals. The contributions in this book provide unique insights, make compelling arguments, and highlight promising areas of scholarship in strategic communication. Presented in four parts, the chapters explore the emergence of strategic communication, its conceptual foundations, its expanding body of knowledge, and the foundation for further development and new directions in the field. Of interest to those studying communication from the perspectives of communication science, management theory, organizational studies, or business administration, this volume will also be useful for readers who are new to strategic communication, and who are interested in the field for its new avenues of research. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Strategic Communication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of identity has steadily emerged in importance in the field of intercultural communication, especially over the last two decades. In a transnational world marked by complex connectivity as well as enduring differences and power inequities, it is imperative to understand and continuously theorize how we perceive the self in relation to the cultural other. Such understandings play a central role in how we negotiate relationships, build alliances, promote peace, and strive for social justice across cultural differences in various contexts. Identity Research in Intercultural Communication, edited by Nilanjana Bardhan and Mark P. Orbe, is unique in scope because it brings together a vast range of positions on identity scholarship under one umbrella. It tracks the state of identity research in the field and includes cutting-edge theoretical essays (some supported by empirical data), and queries what kinds of theoretical, methodological, praxiological and pedagogical boundaries researchers should be pushing in the future. This collection’s primary and qualitative focus is on more recent concepts related to identity that have emerged in scholarship such as power, privilege, intersectionality, critical selfhood, hybridity, diaspora, cosmopolitanism, queer theory, globalization and transnationalism, immigration, gendered and sexual politics, self-reflexivity, positionality, agency, ethics, dialogue and dialectics, and more. The essays are critical/interpretive, postmodern, postcolonial and performative in perspective, and they strike a balance between U.S. and transnational views on identity. This volume is an essential text for scholars, educators, students, and intercultural consultants and trainers.

Book excerpt: Machine learning has shown tremendous benefits in solving complex network problems and providing situation and parameter prediction. However, heavy resources are required to process and analyze the data, which can be done either offline or using edge computing but also requires heavy transmission resources to provide a timely response. The need here is to provide lightweight machine learning protocols that can process and analyze the data at run time and provide a timely and efficient response. These algorithms have grown in terms of computation and memory requirements due to the availability of large data sets. These models/algorithms also require high levels of resources such as computing, memory, communication, and storage. The focus so far was on producing highly accurate models for these communication networks without considering the energy consumption of these machine learning algorithms. For future scalable and sustainable network applications, efforts are required toward designing new machine learning protocols and modifying the existing ones, which consume less energy, i.e., green machine learning protocols. In other words, novel and lightweight green machine learning algorithms/protocols are required to reduce energy consumption which can also reduce the carbon footprint. To realize the green machine learning protocols, this book presents different aspects of green machine learning for future communication networks. This book highlights mainly the green machine learning protocols for cellular communication, federated learning-based models, and protocols for Beyond Fifth Generation networks, approaches for cloud-based communications, and Internet-of-Things. This book also highlights the design considerations and challenges for green machine learning protocols for different future applications.

Book excerpt: A practical review of state-of-the-art non-contiguous multicarrier technologies that are revolutionizing how data is transmitted, received, and processed This book addresses the advantages and the limitations of modern multicarrier technologies and how to meet the challenges they pose using non-contiguous multicarrier technologies and novel algorithms that enhance spectral efficiency, interference robustness, and reception performance. It explores techniques using non-contiguous subcarriers which allow for flexible spectrum aggregation while achieving high spectral efficiency and flexible transmission and reception at lower OSI layers. These include non-contiguous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM), its enhanced version, non-contiguous filter-bank-based multicarrier (NC-FBMC), and generalized multicarrier. Following an overview of current multicarrier technologies for radio communication, the authors examine particular properties of these technologies that allow for more efficient usage within key directions of 5G. They examine the principles of NC-OFDM and discuss efficient transmitter and receiver design. They present the principles of FBMC modulation and discuss key challenges for FBMC communications while comparing performance results with traditional OFDM. They move on from there to a fascinating discussion of GMC modulation within which they clearly demonstrate how that technology encompasses all of the advantages of previously discussed techniques, as well as all imaginable multi- and single-carrier waveforms. Addresses the problems and limitations of current multicarrier technologies (OFDM) Describes innovative techniques using non-contiguous multicarrier waveforms as well as filter-band based and generalized multicarrier waveforms Provides a thorough review of the practical limitations and solutions for evolving and breakthrough 5G communication technologies Explores the future outlook for non-contiguous multicarrier technologies as regards their greater industrial realization, hardware practicality, and other challenges Advanced Multicarrier Technologies for Future Radio Communication: 5G and Beyondis an indispensable working resource fortelecommunication engineers, researchers and academics, as well as graduate and post-graduate students of telecommunications. At the same time, it provides a fascinating look at the shape of things to come for telecommunication industry executives, telecom operators, regulators, policy makers, and economists.

Book excerpt: Comprehensive guide to hybrid communication systems using visible light communication, radio over fiber, and auto channel switching technologies Hybrid Communication Systems for Future 6G and Beyond explores the future of wireless communication and discusses how we can create more efficient and reliable ways to communicate by unlocking the potential of three specific technologies: visible light communication (VLC), radio over fiber (RoF) technology, and auto channel switching. This book begins by exploring the potential of VLC technology, which is currently considered the best alternative to wireless communication. It then moves on to describe how RoF technology can provide a powerful backhaul solution for VLC. Later chapters cover auto channel switching and how it can facilitate data traffic sharing between WiFi and LiFi technologies. Case studies of successful hybrid communication system implementations are included throughout the text to showcase real-world applications and aid in reader comprehension. Written by a highly qualified author with experience in both academia and industry, Hybrid Communication Systems for Future 6G and Beyond includes information on: The evolution, advantages, and disadvantages of hybrid systems, as well as their current limitations and potential solutions to these limitations RoF modulation techniques, including direct and external modulation, and RoF configuration, including intermediate frequency over fiber, baseband over fiber, and millimeter-wave signal generation RoF system level analysis, covering encoding formats, PIN and APD photodiodes, and various experiments and simulations Hybrid communication technology that incorporates wireless Wi-Fi and Visible Light Communication (VLC) such as Li-Fi, to support the upcoming 6G and beyond high-speed communication networks Hybrid Communication Systems for Future 6G and Beyond is an invaluable resource for students, researchers, and professionals in the fields of telecommunications and electronic networking who are interested in designing and implementing hybrid communication systems.
