Chapter 1 presents an extensive survey of the literature of cyano-bridged single-molecule and single-chain magnets, focusing on a building block approach wherein simple cyanometalate precursor complexes direct the assembly of larger architectures. Specific synthetic strategies to obtain multinuclear clusters and chain compounds of desired structure and magnetic properties are outlined in detail. Finally, perspectives on the future directions in the field are presented. Chapter 2 exemplifies the utility of the building block approach in generating high-nuclearity cyano-bridged clusters. It describes the design and synthesis of the facially-capped tricyanide building unit, [TpCr(CN)3]-, as its incorporation into the face-centered cubic cluster [Tp8(H2O)6Cu6Cr8(CN)24]4+. Ferromagnetic exchange between CrIII and CuII ions gives rise to an S = 15 spin ground state, one of the highest yet observed for a cyano-bridged cluster. In addition, the formation of this cluster is accompanied by a linkage isomerism of 12 of the 24 cyanide ligands, providing the first example of a molecule undergoing partial cyanide isomerism. Chapter 3 presents a survey of actinide-containing molecules that have demonstrated evidence of magnetic exchange coupling. The strong magnetic anisotropy characteristic of these elements marks them as promising candidates for single-molecule magnets, however the spin-orbit coupling that gives rise to this anisotropy also complicates analysis of exchange interactions. Current methods for extracting coupling information in these systems are outlined in detail. In addition, molecules that bear exchange-coupled centers but as of yet have not been thoroughly characterized are presented. Chapter 4 describes a detailed investigation of a series of iron(II) pyrrolide complexes of formulae [(tpaR)Fe]-, representing the first examples of transition metal-based mononuclear single-molecule magnets. Static magnetic measurements and high-field EPR spectroscopy reveal the presence of exceptionally strong uniaxial anisotropy in the complexes. Moreover, dynamic magnetic measurements carried out in a small dc field demonstrate that this anisotropy leads to slow relaxation in the complexes. In addition, this relaxation dynamics is probed through Mössbauer spectroscopy, which reveals that the phenomenon occurs in zero applied field in at least two complexes. Chapter 5 describes the synthesis and characterization of a series of cyano-bridged single-chain magnets. Reaction of the S = 3/2, high-anisotropy building unit [ReCl4(CN)2]2- with [M(DMF)6]2+ (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) is shown to direct the formation of the chain compounds (DMF)4MReCl4(CN)2. Dc susceptibility measurements uncover the presence of intrachain antiferromagnetic (Mn) and ferromagnetic (Fe, Co, Ni) exchange. Most importantly, ac susceptibility measurements reveal that all of the chain compounds exhibit slow magnetic relaxation at low temperature. Notably, the Fe congener displays significant magnetic hysteresis at low temperatures, thus demonstrating classical magnet-like behavior in a one-dimensional system. Chapter 6 describes the synthesis the incorporation of [ReCl4(CN)2]2- into the zig-zag chain compound (Bu4N)[TpCuReCl4(CN)2], which is found to demonstrate the strongest ferromagnetic exchange yet observed through cyanide. The strong coupling arises from judicious selection of ReIV and CuII ions, whose molecular orbitals interact through the cyanide bridge such that orbital overlap is minimized. Moreover, the compound is shown to display metamagnetic behavior, and the complete magnetic phase diagram is elucidated through a combination of experimental and theoretical analysis. Finally, the anisotropy tensors of the ReIV centers are shown to cancel, leading to a small effective chain anisotropy and thus the absence of single-chain magnet behavior. Chapter 7 concludes this work by demonstrating that [ReCl4(CN)2]2- can also be employed in the assembly of molecular magnets, as it presents the synthesis and characterization of two linear trinuclear clusters of formulae [(PY5Me2)2M2ReCl4(CN)2]2+ (M = Mn, Ni; PY5Me2 = 2,6-bis(1,1-bis(2-pyridyl)ethyl)-pyridine). Dc susceptibility measurements reveal the presence of antiferromagnetic exchange in the Mn congener, while ferromagnetic exchange is observed in the Ni analogue. In addition, dc magnetization experiments show the presence of axial magnetic anisotropy in both clusters.

This involves the precise combination of molecular subunits that interact with one another via specifically designed reactive sites. Such a strategy has produced materials exhibiting remarkable properties, including those based on metal-organic frameworks and single-molecule magnets. The present Thesis aims to highlight how such metal-organic assemblies can be engineered at the molecular level to promote certain desired functionalities. Specifically, Chapter 2 will focus on the confinement effects of a crystalline sponge on a ferrocene-based guest molecule that is nanostructured within the porous cavities of a host material. In doing so, we evaluate how one can exert some level of control over the binding sites of the guest molecule, through the addition of electron-withdrawing groups, as well as tuning the physical properties of the guest itself through molecular encapsulation. Notably, we demonstrate a distinct change in the dynamic rotational motion of the ferrocene molecules once confined within the crystalline sponge. In Chapter 3, we investigate the generation of slow relaxation of the magnetization from a Co(II)-based metal-organic framework. We compare this to a closely related 2D Co(II) sheet network, and how slight changes in the crystal field, probed through computational methods, can impact the magnetic behaviour. This type of study may be particularly beneficial in the optimization of single-ion magnets, by sequestering metal centres in select chemical environments, and minimizing molecular vibrations that may offer alternative magnetic relaxation pathways. We extend these principles in Chapter 4, through the use of a nitrogen-rich ligand that acts as a scaffold for Ln(III) ions, thereby yielding 0D and 1D architectures. The coordination chemistry of Ln(III) ions with N-donor ligands remains scarce, especially when evaluated from a magnetic perspective, and therefore, we sought to determine the magnetic behaviour of such compounds. The monomeric unit displays clear single-molecule magnet behaviour with an energetic barrier for the reversal of the magnetization, while the 1D chain displays weaker magnetic characteristics. Nevertheless, such compounds incorporating nitrogen-rich ligands offer much promise in the design of environmentally-friendly energetic materials. In Chapter 5, we take a look at different two different systems that involve the formation of radical species. On one hand, we can promote enhanced magnetic communication between Ln(III) ions, which is typically quite challenging to achieve given the buried nature of the 4f orbitals, and on the other hand, we rely on a redox-active ligand to design stimuli-responsive metal-organic assemblies. The latter case provides access to "smart" molecular materials that can respond to changes in their environment. Here, a multi-stimuli responsive nanobarrel was studied, which displayed sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation, heat and chemical reduction. Lastly, Chapter 6 provides a new method for the systematic generation of cationic frameworks, termed Asymmetric Ligand Exchange (ALE). This strategy focuses on the replacement of linear dicarboxylates with asymmetric linkers that features one less negative charge, in order to tune the ionicity of porous frameworks. This allows for the retention of the structural topology and chemical reactivity of the original framework, representing distinct advantages over other similar strategies. Methods to retain permanent porosity in such cationic frameworks are also proposed. Altogether, these studies highlight how the directed assembly of ordered networks can generate varied properties of high scientific interest.

Book excerpt: A series of tetra-nuclear cubane single molecule magnet (SMM) complexes were synthesized with the general formula [Ni(hmp)(ROH)Cl]4 where ROH is an alcohol group or water. The following alcohol groups were explored to examine to effect of chemical modification on the magnetic characteristics of the compound and open the possibility of new chemistries: propyl alcohol, isobutyl alcohol, propargyl alcohol, water, benzyl alcohol, 2-thiophenemethanol, and 2-(methylthio)ethanol. Chemical modification of the compound varies the level of interaction between neighboring molecules and introducing other functional groups allow for post-modification of the complex. The analysis of both of molar paramagnetic susceptibility [chi]MT versus temperature data and reduced magnetization measurements confirm the ferromagnetic coupling in the Ni4 cubane molecule to give an S=4 ground state. AC susceptibility measurements were done to observe the kinetic effects of the barrier for reversal of magnetization. Synthesis of self assembled monolayers (SAMs) of SMMs on gold surfaces and gold nanoparticles was explored. [Ni(hmp-Cl)(MeOH)Cl]4, [MnII2MnIII2(mdea)2(Hmdea)2(O2CPhBr)2Cl2], and [MnII2MnIII2(mdea)2(Hmdea)2 (O2CPhN3)4] were synthesized and possesses the functionality to undergo Suzuki or "Click" coupling reactions. The magnetic properties of the compounds were characterized and indicated ferromagnetic coupling to form S=4 and S=9 compounds, respectively. Suzuki coupling was carried out on the Ni4 compound with gold surfaces and gold nanoparticles functionalized with 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid. XPS and IRRAS were used to monitor reaction progress and to verify the presence of the Ni4 but results are inconclusive. Magnetic measurements were conducted on the functionalized AuNP and indicated a significant change in the magnetic susceptibility.
