Book excerpt: Tokamaks are the devices currently closest to achieve nuclear fusion power and disruptions are unfavorable events in which the plasma energy is lost in a very short timescale causing damage to tokamak structures. RE beams are one of the consequence of disruptions and they carry the risk of in-vessel component damage. Thus, the prevention and control of the RE are of prime importance. The current strategy for runaway electrons is to avoid their generation by a massive material injection (MMI). If their generation cannot be avoided, a 2nd MMI will be used to mitigate the generated RE beam. After the 1st MMI to prevent RE generation, a background plasma of 1st MMI impurities is formed which make the second MMI inefficient to mitigate RE beams inefficient, as observed in the JET tokamak. In this thesis, the physics of the interaction between the RE beam and the mitigation MMI in the presence of a cold background plasma is studied.
Book Synopsis Active Control of Magneto-hydrodynamic Instabilities in Hot Plasmas by : Valentin Igochine
Download or read book Active Control of Magneto-hydrodynamic Instabilities in Hot Plasmas written by Valentin Igochine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past century, world-wide energy consumption has risen dramatically, which leads to a quest for new energy sources. Fusion of hydrogen atoms in hot plasmas is an attractive approach to solve the energy problem, with abundant fuel, inherent safety and no long-lived radioactivity. However, one of the limits on plasma performance is due to the various classes of magneto-hydrodynamic instabilities that may occur. The physics and control of these instabilities in modern magnetic confinement fusion devices is the subject of this book. Written by foremost experts, the contributions will provide valuable reference and up-to-date research reviews for "old hands" and newcomers alike.

Download or read book New Ideas in Tokamak Confinement written by Marshall N. Rosenbluth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-05-08 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Market: Scientists and students involved in thermonuclear fusion research. Thermonuclear fusion research using the confinement device tokamak represents one of the most prominent science projects in the second half of the 20th century. International Tokamak Community is now committing significant effort and funds to experiments with burning plasma, hot and dense enough to produce significant nuclear fusion reactions. The methods used to enhance tokamak performance have a profound and immediate effect on machine design. This book provides an up-to-date account of research in tokamak fusion and puts forward innovative ideas in confinement physics.
