Book excerpt: We present numerical simulations of turbulent drag reduction in wall-bounded flows by additives. The bulk of the work concentrates on polymer additives. A multiscale approach was used to study the fine details of polymer dynamics in turbulence and the transfer of energy between polymers and turbulence. It was shown that polymers extract energy from near-wall vortices and release energy in high-speed streaks very close to the wall. We derived a conceptual model which applies to the two, statistically distinct regimes of polymer drag reduction, namely low drag reduction (LDR) and high drag reduction (HDR). Another additive, fibres, was found to obey to a different mechanism which requires close interaction of multiple vortices.

Solutions of drag-reducing additives are usually viscoelastic fluids having complicated rheological properties. Exploring the characteristics of drag-reduced turbulent flows calls for uniquely designed experimental and numerical simulation techniques and elaborate theoretical considerations. Pertinently understanding the turbulent drag reduction mechanism necessities mastering the fundamentals of turbulence and establishing a proper relationship between turbulence and the rheological properties induced by additives. Promoting the applications of the drag reduction phenomenon requires the knowledge from different fields such as chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, municipal engineering, and so on. This book gives a thorough elucidation of the turbulence characteristics and rheological behaviors, theories, special techniques and application issues for drag-reducing flows by surfactant additives based on the state-of-the-art of scientific research results through the latest experimental studies, numerical simulations and theoretical analyses. Covers turbulent drag reduction, heat transfer reduction, complex rheology and the real-world applications of drag reduction Introduces advanced testing techniques, such as PIV, LDA, and their applications in current experiments, illustrated with multiple diagrams and equations Real-world examples of the topic’s increasingly important industrial applications enable readers to implement cost- and energy-saving measures Explains the tools before presenting the research results, to give readers coverage of the subject from both theoretical and experimental viewpoints Consolidates interdisciplinary information on turbulent drag reduction by additives Turbulent Drag Reduction by Surfactant Additives is geared for researchers, graduate students, and engineers in the fields of Fluid Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Turbulence, Chemical Engineering, Municipal Engineering. Researchers and practitioners involved in the fields of Flow Control, Chemistry, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Experimental Fluid Dynamics, and Rheology will also find this book to be a much-needed reference on the topic.

Book excerpt: The book provides an original approach in the research of structural analysis of free developed shear compressible turbulence at high Reynolds number on the base of direct numerical simulation (DNS) and instability evolution for ideal medium (integral conservation laws) with approximate mechanism of dissipation (FLUX dissipative monotone “upwind” difference schemes) and does not use any explicit sub-grid approximation and semi-empirical models of turbulence. Convective mixing is considered as a principal part of conservation law.Appropriate hydrodynamic instabilities (free developed shear turbulence) are investigated from unique point of view. It is based on the concept of large ordered structures with stochastic core of small scale developed turbulence (”turbulent spot”). Decay of “turbulent spot” are simulated by Monte Carlo method. Proposed approach is based on two hypotheses: statistical independence of the characteristic of large ordered structures (LOS) and small-scale turbulence (ST) “and” weak influence of molecular viscosity (or more generally, dissipative mechanism) on properties of large ordered structures. Two versions of instabilities, due to Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov are studied detail by the three-dimensional calculations, extended to the large temporal intervals, up to turbulent stage and investigation turbulent mixing zone (TMZ).The book covers both the fundamental and practical aspects of turbulence and instability and summarizes the result of numerical experiments conducted over 30 years period with direct participation of the author. In the book are cited the opinions of the leading scientists in this area of research: Acad. A S Monin (Russia), Prof. Y Nakamura (Japan, Nagoya University) and Prof. F Harlow (USA, Los-Alamos).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title provides the fundamental bases for developing turbulence models on rational grounds. The main different methods of approach are considered, ranging from statistical modelling at various degrees of complexity to numerical simulations of turbulence. Each of these various methods has its own specific performances and limitations, which appear to be complementary rather than competitive. After a discussion of the basic concepts, mathematical tools and methods for closure, the book considers second order closure models. Emphasis is placed upon this approach because it embodies potentials for clarifying numerous problems in turbulent shear flows. Simpler, generally older models are then presented as simplified versions of the more general second order models. The influence of extra physical parameters is also considered. Finally, the book concludes by examining large Eddy numerical simulations methods. Given the book’s comprehensive coverage, those involved in the theoretical or practical study of turbulence problems in fluids will find this a useful and informative read.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the course of this research effort computational parametric studies of the microbubble drag reduction phenomena were conducted. The effects of mixture density variation, free stream turbulence intensity, free stream velocity, and surface roughness on the microbubble drag reduction were studied using a single phase model based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes transport equations. Additionally, predictions of Eulerian multiphase model for microbubble laden flow were compared with Direct Numerical Simulation from the open literature. Good agreement was achieved between the simulations with the single phase model and experimental data of Deutsch et al. (2003). This good agreement was observed for both free stream velocity as well as surface roughness effect studies. Increased free stream turbulence intensity was observed to result in lower drag reduction, and this effect was stronger for higher density ratios of water and injected gas. For the same free stream velocity increase, the drag reduction was higher for higher density ratio. For fixed gas injection rate, lower drag reduction was predict for higher free stream velocity, and increased drag reduction was obtained with increased surface roughness. The drag reduction predicted by the multiphase model was substantially lower than that predicted by the Direct Numerical Simulation model of Ferrante and Elghobashi (2004). However, gas volume fraction and turbulent kinetic energy profiles predicted by the multiphase model were similar but not identical to those predicted by the DNS of Ferrante and Elghobashi (2004).

Book excerpt: This book explains theoretical derivations and presents expressions for fluid and convective turbulent flow of mildly elastic fluids in various internal and external flow situations involving different types of geometries, such as the smooth/rough circular pipes, annular ducts, curved tubes, vertical flat plates, and channels. Understanding the methodology of the analyses facilitates appreciation for the rationale used for deriving expressions of parameters relevant to the turbulent flow of mildly elastic fluids. This knowledge serves as a driving force for developing new ideas, investigating new situations, and extending theoretical analyses to other unexplored areas of the rheology of mildly elastic drag reducing fluids. The book suits a range of functions--it can be used to teach elective upper-level undergraduate or graduate courses for chemical engineers, material scientists, mechanical engineers, and polymer scientists; guide researchers unexposed to this alluring and interesting area of drag reduction; and serve as a reference to all who want to explore and expand the areas dealt with in this book.
