Effects central to shock wave/boundary layer interaction are identified and explained. The quantitative importance of the turbulence anisotropy and the shock oblique angle is demonstrated. Drop in Reynolds shear stress across a normal shock is shown. The implication for Reynolds stress models is discussed. The role of dilatational turbulent fluctuations on turbulence amplification is studied in detail. An explanation is suggested for lower amplification reported in wind-tunnel studies. Linear analysis & DNS are used to demonstrate the considerable influence of entropic fluctuations on turbulence evolution across a shock. Positive correlation between u' and T ' suppress amplification while negative correlation enhances it. Invalidity of Morkovin's hypothesis is demonstrated. A high order scheme is developed to allow strong shock/turbulence interaction. Results are presented for isotropic turbulence/normal shock interaction. (AN).

Characterized by unorganized chaotic motion and irregular fluctuations, it persists as one of the most challenging topics in fluid mechanics despite volumes of documented research and crucial findings. This begs the question: What is turbulence and why is it so challenging? Turbulence research studies cover a wide spectrum of branches from fundamental flow propagation to different turbulence interactions. This research project investigates the simplest class of turbulent flow studies, homogeneous isotropic turbulence. In a quest to advance the fundamental understanding of turbulence physics, a direct numerical simulation tool is developed. The tool generates a turbulent periodic cube with vortical fluctuations and three interaction case studies. The evolution of the velocity in time is derived from the Navier-Stokes equations. These governing equations are integrated, along with initial and boundary conditions, to formulate turbulence. Fully-developed turbulence is achieved when the Tavoularis (1978) criterion of axial velocity variation is met. Output data sets are collected for numerical analysis. The turbulence periodic cube geometry is assessed for its applicability in this study. The simplified structure is found to be efficient and facilitated. The interaction case studies of shock-turbulence and detonation-turbulence are compared to an unforced flow interaction. The case studies are statistically analyzed and visualized yielding important conclusions on the effects of the fluctuations, heat release, detonation inherent length scale, and detonation intrinsic instability on the flow behavior. A mutual interaction is found between the turbulence structures and the strong detonation wave. An extension of the long-standing Tavoularis velocity skewness factor is suggested. The proposed velocity skewness vector quantifies the variation of the three velocity components in the three Cartesian coordinates. This comprehensive expression highlights the contribution of the three-dimensional velocity fluctuations to the turbulence state.

However, our present knowledge on the structures and mechanisms of turbulence is mostly based on incompressible flows. In the present work, compressibility effects in turbulent, high-speed, boundary layer flows are systematically investigated using the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) approach. Three-dimensional, time-dependent, fully nonlinear, compressible Navier-Stokes equations were numerically integrated by high-order finite-difference methods; no modeling for turbulence is used during the solution because the available resolution is sufficient to capture the relevant scales. The boundary layer problem deals with fully-turbulent compressible flows over flat geometries. Apart from its practical relevance to technological flows, turbulent compressible boundary layer flow is the simplest experimentally realizable turbulent compressible flow. Still, measuring difficulties prohibit a detailed experimental description of the flow, especially in the near-wall region. DNS studies provide a viable means to probe the physics of compressible turbulence in this region. The focus of this work is to explore the paths of energy transfer through which compressible turbulence is sustained. The structural similarities and differences between the incompressible and compressible turbulence are also investigated. The energy flow patterns or energy cascades are found to be directly related to the evolution of vortical structures which are generated in the near-wall region. Near-wall structures, and mechanisms which are not readily accessible through physical experiments are analyzed and their critical role on the evolution and the behavior of the flow is documented extensively. The research was conducted at transonic speeds with a normal shock wave and two dimensional turbulence, making use of existing knowledge and computational methods for developing insight to the shock/turbulence interaction. The results indicate that the shock has a significant effect on the turbulence. The shock produces a jump in the turbulence statistics, with a long relaxation distance to return to unshocked values. The turbulence kinetic energy is increased by as much as 30 percent by the shock. The density-velocity correlation becomes important during the shock jump and is greatly increased over the case without a shock. On the other hand, the pressure-velocity correlation is not so important. The shock speed and ripple were found to be important factors in determining the turbulence downstream of a shock wave. Shock speed and ripple correlations are the same size as other important turbulence correlations. The work must be extended to higher Mach numbers and three-dimensional turbulence, with oblique shocks and shear flows. The shock ripple may be more important for oblique shocks because of the larger v component. (jhd).
