Book Synopsis Police Leadership by : Pauline Ramshaw
Download or read book Police Leadership written by Pauline Ramshaw and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws upon a range of theoretical and empirical research to explore contemporary debates about police leadership. Focusing upon leadership styles, ethics, integrity and professionalism, workforce diversity, legitimacy and accountability, it reviews the changing context and nature of leadership over time and explores the gains, losses, tensions and challenges that different leadership models bring to policing. Leadership is present at various levels within the police service and this collection reflects upon appropriate leadership qualities and requirements for different roles and at different ranks. The book also considers the difference between leadership and management in an attempt to capture fuller debates within police leadership. Part one surmises the contextual backdrop to current thinking and the primary challenges facing leadership in the police service. Part two highlights the changing face of leadership through an exploration of the call for greater diversity within the ranks of police leadership, and the final section examines police leadership beyond England and Wales. Through this, Police Leadership explores how the challenges facing police leadership in England and Wales share similarities with those in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Greece, North America, and Australia in the face of the pressures of political and economic uncertainty.
Book Synopsis Independent Review of Police Officer and Staff Remuneration and Conditions final report by : Thomas P. Winsor
Download or read book Independent Review of Police Officer and Staff Remuneration and Conditions final report written by Thomas P. Winsor and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Review has established that the police service is currently ill-equipped to respond to possible and probable changes in increasingly specialised crime trends, political accountability, financial resources and the demographics of its workforce. This report covers reforms that may be introduced in the longer term. An earlier report on reforms that could be introduced in the short term published in March 2011 (Cm. 8024, ISBN 9780101802420) and made recommendations for savings of £1.1 billion over 3 years, most of which are being implemented following a determination of the Police Arbitration Panel. This report makes recommendations which could realise gross savings of £1.9 billion with £1.2 billion reinvested in policing. The 121 recommendations cover: employment framework, entry route and promotion; health, fitness and managing the workforce; basic pay, contribution-related pay and role-based pay; negotiating machinery. Each chapter contains a recommended phased process for introduction. The recommendations will provide the police service with the ability to attract and retain high calibre candidates with different skills and experiences, to maintain operational resilience by maximising the deployment of fit and healthy officers, and to manage office numbers according to need and in the public interest. Entry into the police service and advancement within would be according to the sole criterion of merit. The recommendations for reform of the pay review apparatus will have a profound effect, establishing a well-resourced professional pay review body ensuring that officers' pay is determined on sound evidence.

Book Synopsis Cold War Test Pilot by : Ron Burrows
Download or read book Cold War Test Pilot written by Ron Burrows and published by Air World. This book was released on 2022-01-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chief test pilot recounts his hair-raising experiences with the RAF in this detailed and often-witty memoir. Includes photos. The Falkland Islands had been invaded and a Task Force was already steaming south at full speed. On board the carriers were the Harriers that would provide essential aerial cover for the British troops and ships sent to recapture the islands. They would be entering particularly hostile territory, and the type’s capabilities urgently needed to be expanded and proved. This was a job that Ron Burrows and the test pilots of his elite Fighter Test Squadron at Boscombe Down were ready to take on. From the 1960s to the 1990s, Ron test-flew all the RAF’s fast-jets—in the process of which he survived two crash landings and two emergency ejections, as well as numerous other close shaves. A master of his craft, he rose to become the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment’s chief test pilot, and this is his remarkable story. With four test-flying tours under his belt and close-air-support missions flying Hunters in the Aden Emergency, Ron’s experiences extended throughout the critical final decades of the Cold War. A graduate of the US Navy’s test pilot school, he has flown an unusually broad range of US and UK aircraft from fast-jets to heavy multi-engine aircraft. With his unrivaled knowledge and expertise, he is able to explain the methods, techniques, and demands of his profession, with many examples of what can and often does go wrong in aircraft development and testing. His descriptions of his near misses and catastrophic accidents are written with color and candor. But he also tries to inform the reader about the skills required to fly and test fast-jets and about the development of cockpit displays and design, highlighting some of the issues and problems encountered in development and in operation. “If it can go wrong, it will go wrong” could be the subtitle of this frank and witty account which flies along with the speed of one of those fast-jets.

Book Synopsis The British Carrier Strike Fleet After 1945 by : David Hobbs
Download or read book The British Carrier Strike Fleet After 1945 written by David Hobbs and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a follow-up to the highly regarded British Pacific Fleet, David Hobbs looks at the post-World War II fortunes of the most powerful fleet in the Royal Navy—its decline in the face of diminishing resources, its final fall at the hands of ignorant politicians, and its recent resurrection in the form of the Queen Elizabeth class carriers, the largest ships ever built for the Royal Navy. Despite prophecies that nuclear weapons would make conventional forces obsolete, British carrier-borne aircraft were almost continuously employed. The Royal Navy faced new challenges in places like Korea, Egypt, and the Persian Gulf. During these trials the Royal Navy invented techniques and devices crucial to modern carrier operations, pioneering novel forms of warfare tactics for countering insurgency and terrorism. This book combines narratives of poorly understood operations with clear analysis of their strategic and political background. With beautiful illustrations and original research, British Carrier Strike Fleet tells an important but largely untold story of renewed significance as Britain once again embraces carrier operation.

Book Synopsis Recruitment and retention in the armed forces by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts
Download or read book Recruitment and retention in the armed forces written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-07-03 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The armed forces are short of servicemen and women. At April 2007, the overall shortfall was 5,850 personnel, or 3.2 per cent and none of the three Services were within their targets, known as 'manning balance'. Many highly specialised areas, such as nurses and linguists, have larger shortfalls. The impact of continuous downsizing, pressures and overstretch is affecting the ability of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to retain and provide a satisfactory life for Armed Forces personnel. Numbers leaving early have risen in the last two years, and are now at a ten-year peak for Army and Royal Air Force Officers and for Royal Air Force Other Ranks. The frequency of deployments is creating pressure on some personnel, with large numbers exceeding the "harmony" guidelines on time spent away from home. The MoD has operated above the most demanding level of operations under Defence Planning Assumptions since 2001, but has not adjusted its manning requirements. Short term financial measures to improve retention have had some success, but do not address the key drivers for leaving such as servicemen and women's inability to plan ahead and the impact on their family life. The MoD also lacks basic information on the costs of its measures which would enable it to make more informed judgements on incentives to improve recruitment and retention. Past cuts in recruitment activity have had a damaging longer-term effect on manning in some areas. Such cutbacks are almost impossible to recover as budget and capacity constraints prevent the MoD from over-recruiting to make up for shortfalls in previous years.
