Scholars, translators, and abstractors required accurate, up-to-date information reflecting recent developments and coinages in Hebrew diplomatic and related terminology which were not available in general dictionaries. Our decision to undertake such a compilation was strengthened by the official requests from Congress and various government agencies for translations, interpretations, and resumes of a multitude of official documents emanating from Israel. Fortunately, the materials to draw upon were readily available at the library since it emphasized acquiring important works devoted to the politico-historical, economic, legal, and sociological aspects of this are.Diplomatic Hebrew (originally published in 1980) will facilitate the study of Israel's foreign policy and contains entries intimately connected with this field, such as immigration, border security, economics, and defense.Aside from the Hebrew-English vocabulary, we have appended an extensive list of acronyms to assist in deciphering a most baffling aspect of current Israeli Hebrew for which little assistance is forthcoming. There is also a bilingual listing of international associations, bureaus, institutes, councils, and treaties concerning Israel. Both government and unofficial bodies are integrated within the vocabulary used.We hope that Diplomatic Hebrew will contribute, however slightly, to a fuller appreciation of Middle Eastern affairs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first all-encompassing book on Israel’s foreign policy and the diplomatic history of the Jewish people, The Star and the Scepter retraces and explains the interactions of Jews with other nations from the ancient kingdoms of Israel to modernity. Starting with the Hebrew Bible, Emmanuel Navon argues that one cannot grasp Israel’s interactions with the world without understanding how Judaism’s founding document has shaped the Jewish psyche. He sheds light on the people of Israel’s foreign policy through the ages: the ancient kingdoms of Israel, Jewish diasporas in Europe from the Middle Ages to the emancipation, the emerging nineteenth-century Zionist movement, and Zionist diplomacy following World War I and surrounding World War II. Navon elucidates Israel’s foreign policy from the birth of the state in 1948 to our days: the dilemmas and choices at the beginning of the Cold War; Israel’s attempts to establish periphery alliances; the Arab-Israeli conflict; Israel’s relations with Europe, the United States, Russia, Asia, Africa, Latin America, the United Nations, and the Jewish diasporas; and how twenty-first-century energy geopolitics is transforming Israel’s foreign relations today. Navon’s analysis is rooted in two central ideas, represented by the Star of David (faith) and the scepter (political power). First, he contends that the interactions of Jews with the world have always been best served by combining faith with pragmatism. Second, Navon shows how the state of Israel owes its diplomatic achievements to national assertiveness and hard power—not only military strength but economic prowess and technological innovation. Demonstrating that diplomacy is a balancing act between ideals and realpolitik, The Star and the Scepter draws aspirational and pragmatic lessons from Israel’s exceptional diplomatic history.

Book excerpt: In The Text of the Hebrew Bible and its Editions some of the top world scholars and editors of the Hebrew Bible and its versions present essays on the aims, method, and problems of editing the biblical text(s), taking as a reference the Complutensian Polyglot, first modern edition of the Hebrew text and its versions and whose Fifth Centennial was celebrated in 2014. The main parts of the volume discuss models of editions from the Renaissance and its forerunners to the Digital Age, the challenges offered by the different textual traditions, particular editorial problems of the individual books of the Bible, and the role played by quotations. It thus sets a landmark in the future of biblical editions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the critical ideologies that have shaped the perception, reception, and projection of Old Yiddish during the course of the past century. The first critical, historical survey of the history of scholarship in the field, it confronts the assumptions underlying the research—assumptions of cultural identity and the value of the literature of that culture. It documents the pervasive denial that Yiddish is a language and that Yiddish literature is intrinsically valuable, or the assertion that this literature is German and a product of German culture.

Book excerpt: Translating the Hebrew Bible in Medieval Iberia provides the princeps diplomatic edition and a comprehensive study of Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Hunt. 268. The manuscript, produced in the Iberian Peninsula in the late thirteenth century, features a biblical glossary-commentary in Hebrew that includes 2,018 glosses in the vernacular and 156 in Arabic, and to date is the only manuscript of these characteristics known to have been produced in this region. Esperanza Alfonso has edited the text and presents here a study of it, examining its pedagogical function, its sources, its exegetical content, and its extraordinary value for the study of biblical translation in the Iberian Peninsula and in the Sephardic Diaspora. Javier del Barco provides a detailed linguistic study and a glossary of the corpus of vernacular glosses.
