Book excerpt: DIPLOMA MATTERS In our current education system too many high school students wind up with too few choices. Students are locked into what is decided for them by a broken system. Too often, they are handed a diploma that holds an empty promise. This practical field book is filled with effective tools from The Education Trust–West. Diploma Matters helps school leaders and teachers examine the current high school experience and develop a detailed action plan that will transform curriculum and ensure that all students are ready for college and the workplace. “This is a book for practitioners who have seen it all. Linda Murray captures in a straight-forward way the nuts and bolts of how to do the work of reform. Linda, who was an extraordinary superintendent, proves to be a captivating storyteller.” —PETER J. NEGRONI, senior vice president, College Board “This is a story worth reading, including the specific implications for schools and districts nationwide.” —MICHAEL W. KIRST, emeritus professor of Education and Business Administration, Stanford University; president, California State Board of Education; author, Political Dynamics Of American Education “This book is a definitive ‘how to’ for effective, meaningful, and lasting school reform.” —KATHY BURKHARD, former president, San Jose Teachers’ Association

Book excerpt: Winner of the Outstanding Book Award (Society for Professors of Education) This book offers a re-assessment of the educational and occupational value of MOOCs based on developments since 2013. When MOOCs appeared--amidst great fanfare in 2012, leaders proclaimed an educational “revolution.” By 2013, however, dramatic failures, negative research findings, and sharp critiques ended the MOOC hype. This book examines both MOOCs and prior distance learning innovations, and offers a broad overview of their educational, economic and social effects. Chapters explore ties between MOOCs and emerging pedagogical models as well as exponentially rising tuition rates, student debt, and chronic underemployment of university graduates worldwide. It offers readers a comprehensive, up-to-the-moment guide to the MOOC phenomenon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contentious debates over the benefits—or drawbacks—of a liberal education are as old as America itself. From Benjamin Franklin to the Internet pundits, critics of higher education have attacked its irrelevance and elitism—often calling for more vocational instruction. Thomas Jefferson, by contrast, believed that nurturing a student’s capacity for lifelong learning was useful for science and commerce while also being essential for democracy. In this provocative contribution to the disputes, university president Michael S. Roth focuses on important moments and seminal thinkers in America’s long-running argument over vocational vs. liberal education. Conflicting streams of thought flow through American intellectual history: W. E. B. DuBois’s humanistic principles of pedagogy for newly emancipated slaves developed in opposition to Booker T. Washington’s educational utilitarianism, for example. Jane Addams’s emphasis on the cultivation of empathy and John Dewey’s calls for education as civic engagement were rejected as impractical by those who aimed to train students for particular economic tasks. Roth explores these arguments (and more), considers the state of higher education today, and concludes with a stirring plea for the kind of education that has, since the founding of the nation, cultivated individual freedom, promulgated civic virtue, and instilled hope for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching is not an activity that necessarily causes learning. Nor is learning always the result of having been taught by someone or something. So, what is teaching—and more specifically—what is good teaching? Philogia Prima draws on her experiences as a teacher to answer those questions—while also sharing her observations about academics as the only Jew in a Catholic high school. She explains that teaching is not always a means of communicating knowledge about something or someone external to either teacher or students. But having the confidence to function as a teacher should be the product of a teacher’s knowledge and belief—call it faith—in the value of whatever is being taught. If a teacher is neither knowledgeable nor aware of what is lacking, confidence is not there, and students can sense its absence. Moreover, if a teacher never says, “I don’t know,” he or she is doing students a disservice. Students need to be reminded that learning is a process that sometimes emanates from, but just as often, includes the teacher. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, administrator or someone else trying to help students learn, you’ll find valuable insights in More Things in Heaven and Earth.
