Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of an astounding transatlantic phenomenon, a popular evangelical revival known in America as the first Great Awakening (1735-1745). Beginning in the mid-1730s, supporters and opponents of the revival commented on the extraordinary nature of what one observer called the "great ado," with its extemporaneous outdoor preaching, newspaper publicity, and rallies of up to 20,000 participants. Frank Lambert, biographer of Great Awakening leader George Whitefield, offers an overview of this important episode and proposes a new explanation of its origins. The Great Awakening, however dramatic, was nevertheless unnamed until after its occurrence, and its leaders created no doctrine nor organizational structure that would result in a historical record. That lack of documentation has allowed recent scholars to suggest that the movement was "invented" by nineteenth-century historians. Some specialists even think that it was wholly constructed by succeeding generations, who retroactively linked sporadic happenings to fabricate an alleged historic development. Challenging these interpretations, Lambert nevertheless demonstrates that the Great Awakening was invented--not by historians but by eighteenth-century evangelicals who were skillful and enthusiastic religious promoters. Reporting a dramatic meeting in one location in order to encourage gatherings in other places, these men used commercial strategies and newly popular print media to build a revival--one that they also believed to be an "extraordinary work of God." They saw a special meaning in contemporary events, looking for a transatlantic pattern of revival and finding a motive for spiritual rebirth in what they viewed as a moral decline in colonial America and abroad. By examining the texts that these preachers skillfully put together, Lambert shows how they told and retold their revival account to themselves, their followers, and their opponents. His inquiries depict revivals as cultural productions and yield fresh understandings of how believers "spread the word" with whatever technical and social methods seem the most effective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When thought sees that it is incapable of discovering something new, that very perception is the seed of intelligence, isn’t it? That is intelligence: ‘I cannot do.’ I thought I could do a lot of things, and I can in a certain direction, but in a totally new direction I cannot do anything. The discovery of that is intelligence. This comprehensive record of J. Krishnamurti’s teachings is an excellent, wide-ranging introduction to the insights of the great philosopher and religious teacher. Apart from existential issues such as violence, insecurity, conflict, pleasure, fear, and suffering, Krishnamurti examines larger but related questions, such as the role of the guru (with Professor Jacob Needleman); the traditional methods prescribed by Vedanta (with Swami Venkatesananda); the problem of good and evil (with Alain Naude); and the relationship between thought and intelligence (with Dr. David Bohm). First published in 1973, this book contains, apart from Krishnamurti’s public talks and answers to questions from the audience, his incisive dialogues with some of the eminent minds of his time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The election of America’s first black president has led many to believe that race is no longer a real obstacle to success and that remaining racial inequality stems largely from the failure of minority groups to take personal responsibility for seeking out opportunities. Often this argument is made in the name of the long tradition of self-reliance and American individualism. In Awakening to Race, Jack Turner upends this view, arguing that it expresses not a deep commitment to the values of individualism, but a narrow understanding of them. Drawing on the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Frederick Douglass, Ralph Ellison, and James Baldwin, Turner offers an original reconstruction of democratic individualism in American thought. All these thinkers, he shows, held that personal responsibility entails a refusal to be complicit in injustice and a duty to combat the conditions and structures that support it. At a time when individualism is invoked as a reason for inaction, Turner makes the individualist tradition the basis of a bold and impassioned case for race consciousness—consciousness of the ways that race continues to constrain opportunity in America. Turner’s “new individualism” becomes the grounds for concerted public action against racial injustice.

Book excerpt: I wanted to gist of different writers in the globe and my own experiences in different places regarding social dogma, in various aspect and appeal to repeal the text which are wrong in the present situation of the world order. There is nothing wrong to say that everything in this world is changing nothing is fixed and nothing is immoveable in this universe. We have seen in the name of religion, 30 lakhs people killed in 1971 in Bangladesh freedom wars. More than 2 lakhs women or girls raped, and this was declared by then Shaik Mujib PM of that country. I don’t think British has killed so many people in their nearly 200 years being administrators. Few days back Shaikh Hassina PM of Bangladesh has asked fundamentalist that God is there to punish if anyone do any sin and those who believe in God should, must not take weapons in their own hand to punish anybody in the name of God. If they do so that means they have no faith in God.

Book excerpt: The primary goal of this volume is to describe the contemporary state of affairs in Western psychotherapy, and to do so in a Whiteheadian spirit: with genuine openness to the relative ways in which creativity, beauty, truth, and peace manifest themselves in various cultural traditions. This Whiteheadian Dialogue explores afresh an important cross-elucidatory path: what have we, and what can be learned from a dialogue with Eastern worldviews? In order to generate meaningful contrasts between these different systems of thought, all the papers address common core issues. On one hand, how does the given system understand the interaction of the individual, society, and nature (or cosmos)? On the other hand, what is the paradigm of all pathology and what is its typical or curative pattern?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised New Edition of How to Find God in Everything (published in 2008). We are all looking for meaning among the chaos that is modern life. When we look around it is all too easy to see a world that is spiralling out of control, but if we can make changes to our own perceptions – changing our own reality – we can start to make a genuine difference to the world around us. We can turn suffering to joy and terror to peace by opening ourselves up to the concept of fulfilling our own potential. To do this, we must see that everyone and everything is a manifestation of God (or Awakeness, Presence or Being) – that everyone and everything is one with the divine and at every moment we can make the choice of what we let ourselves feel. If we can learn to use this control in every area of our lives – from how we eat, move, breathe, think and feel to how we relate to one another, our work, our finances and our creativity – we can change not just our own lives but also the world we live in. Written in a lively, engaging and very accessible style that sparkles with clarity and grace, Amodaexplains her use of the word 'God' in this context, and the book reflects the important changes inAmoda's teaching in recent years as her own awakening has evolved. Beautifully presented and practical as well as inspiring, this is a brilliant introduction to the world of non-duality, non-separation and our intrinsic oneness, and supports the reader on their path to inner joy and freedom. 'No amount of fighting to save the whales or singing for world peace will ultimately create a harmonious humanity if we are still divided within. If you have not fully embraced yourself, then how can you fully embrace the world?'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia, like many other countries around the world, is currently experiencing the process of democratic backsliding, marked by a toxic mix of religious sectarianism, polarization, and executive overreach. Despite this trend, Indonesians have become more, rather than less, satisfied with their country's democratic practice. What accounts for this puzzle? Unity Through Division examines an overlooked aspect of democracy in Indonesia: political representation. In this country, an ideological cleavage between pluralism and Islamism has long characterized political competition. This cleavage, while divisive, has been a strength of Indonesia's democracy, giving meaning to political participation and allowing a degree of representation not often observed in young democracies. While the recent resurgence of radical Islam and political polarization in Indonesian politics may have contributed to democratic erosion, these factors have simultaneously clarified political alternatives and improved perceptions of representation, in turn bolstering democratic participation and satisfaction. This compelling book effectively challenges the wisdom of the role of Islam in Indonesian political life and provides a fresh analysis for debates on democratic backsliding in Indonesia and beyond.
