Book excerpt: The need for seamless connectivity in handheld and tablet devices is driving the integration of high data-rate radios on to SoCs implemented on deeply scaled CMOS processes. Current and emerging wireless standards such as WiFi and 4G (WiMAX and LTE) are based on complex modulations such as OFDM for spectral efficiency reasons. The watt-level peak powers and large peak-to-average power ratios required by these standards present significant efficiency and linearity challenges to the design of CMOS PAs. As a result, power amplifiers remain the dominant power consumption and integration bottleneck today. This dissertation proposes novel techniques for efficiently combining the outputs of power amplifiers to achieve high output power with good efficiency at back-off. By dynamically reconfiguring the power combining network, we minimize the passive losses at back-off. This technique only uses CMOS thin-gate digital transistors as switches and the single nominal digital supply making it compatible with SoC integration. Additionally, the performance is expected to improve with process scaling. The integrated matching network is based on transformer combining and is inherently broadband. A 2.5 GHz digitally-scalable transformer combining power amplifier (DST-PA) is implemented in a 32 nm CMOS process as a proof of concept. An inverter-based class-D PA topology is utilized to obtain low output impedance and good linearity. The fabricated stand alone DST-PA in simulation delivers 26 dBm peak CW power with 39% total system Power Added Efficiency (includes all drivers). Average OFDM power is 21 dBm with efficiency 37% when transmitting WiFi signals with PA pre-distortion. The integrated PA with the digital phase modulator is packaged in a flip-chip BGA package. Good linearity performance (ACPR and EVM) demonstrates the applicability of the proposed power combined configurations.

The common way is to model the system from input to output, but in this thesis we want to obtain the inverse of the system. Power amplifiers (PAs) used in communication devices can be nonlinear, and this causes interference in adjacent transmitting channels. A prefilter, called predistorter, can be used to invert the effects of the PA, such that the combination of predistorter and PA reconstructs an amplified version of the input signal. In this thesis, the predistortion problem has been investigated for outphasing power amplifiers, where the input signal is decomposed into two branches that are amplified separately by highly efficient nonlinear amplifiers and then recombined. We have formulated a model structure describing the imperfections in an outphasing abbrPA and the matching ideal predistorter. The predistorter can be estimated from measured data in different ways. Here, the initially nonconvex optimization problem has been developed into a convex problem. The predistorters have been evaluated in measurements. The goal with the inverse models in this thesis is to use them in cascade with the systems to reconstruct the original input. It is shown that the problems of identifying a model of a preinverse and a postinverse are fundamentally different. It turns out that the true inverse is not necessarily the best one when noise is present, and that other models and structures can lead to better inversion results. To construct a predistorter (for a PA, for example), a model of the inverse is used, and different methods can be used for the estimation. One common method is to estimate a postinverse, and then using it as a preinverse, making it straightforward to try out different model structures. Another is to construct a model of the system and then use it to estimate a preinverse in a second step. This method identifies the inverse in the setup it will be used, but leads to a complicated optimization problem. A third option is to model the forward system and then invert it. This method can be understood using standard identification theory in contrast to the ones above, but the model is tuned for the forward system, not the inverse. Models obtained using the various methods capture different properties of the system, and a more detailed analysis of the methods is presented for linear time-invariant systems and linear approximations of block-oriented systems. The theory is also illustrated in examples. When a preinverse is used, the input to the system will be changed, and typically the input data will be different than the original input. This is why the estimation of preinverses is more complicated than for postinverses, and one set of experimental data is not enough. Here, we have shown that identifying a preinverse in series with the system in repeated experiments can improve the inversion performance.

In 1998 alone, over 150 million cell phones were sold worldwide, representing an astonishing 50% increase over the previous year. Maintaining such a remarkable growth rate requires constant innovation to decrease cost while increasing performance and functionality. Traditionally, wireless products have depended on a mixture of semicond- tor technologies, spanning GaAs, bipolar and BiCMOS, just to name a few. A question that has been hotly debated is whether CMOS could ever be suitable for RF applications. However, given the acknowledged inferiority of CMOS transistors relative to those in other candidate technologies, it has been argued by many that “CMOS RF” is an oxymoron, an endeavor best left cloistered in the ivory towers of academia. In rebuttal, there are several compelling reasons to consider CMOS for wi- less applications. Aside from the exponential device and density improvements delivered regularly by Moore’s law, only CMOS offers a technology path for integrating RF and digital elements, potentially leading to exceptionally c- pact and low-cost devices. To enable this achievement, several thorny issues need to be resolved. Among these are the problem of poor passive com- nents, broadband noise in MOSFETs, and phase noise in oscillators made with CMOS. Beyond the component level, there is also the important question of whether there are different architectural choices that one would make if CMOS were used, given the different constraints.
