The second approach to improve global bark beetle monitoring involves a data management workflow for collecting and analyzing data from sentinel gardens. Sentinel gardens are experimental plots of trees that are established in specific locations to monitor the occurrence and distribution of possible invasive species. We created a mobile app that enables users to capture data about trees and pests and upload it to a cloud database with metadata such as location, date, time, and tree species. The data uploaded by the app can be accessed and validated by experts without the need to be present in the field. This data management workflow allows data acquisition by non-experts in the field and data verification and dissemination by experts via the internet. This approach proves as an example of how industry tools can be used to streamline data management for a more responsive, efficient, and reproducible use of sentinel gardens. These two initiatives exemplify the manner in which the implementation of machine learning techniques and rigorous data management practices can augment the prevention and identification of invasive bark and ambrosia beetles, thereby facilitating the investigation of these organisms and their ecological characteristics.
