Book excerpt: The digital age has driven the need to combine radio-frequency engineering experience with overall high-speed digital design, as well as the need for an overall understanding of system performance. In some advanced designs, both analog and digital disciplines have to exist and operate in the same space, and with the correct design, high performance is possible. This book is intended to provide a step-by-step guide to all aspects and tradeoffs from theory to application for fiber-optics transceiver electronics. Presenting a thorough compendium of information in a structured way, this book enables the engineer to develop a methodical design approach, a deep understanding of specifications parameters and the reasons behind them, as well as their effects and consequences on system performance, which are essential for proper component design. Further, a fundamental understanding of RF, digital circuit design, and linear and nonlinear phenomena is important in order to achieve the desired performance levels. Becoming familiar with solid-state devices and passives used to build optical receivers and transmitters is also important so one can effectively overcome design limitations. The book is organized into six main sections covering the following subjects: System Overview Semiconductors and Passives RF and Control Concepts Introduction to CATV MODEM and Transmitters Digital Transceiver Performance Integration and Testing

Book excerpt: This book highlights the fundamental principles of optical fiber technology required for understanding modern high-capacity lightwave telecom networks. Such networks have become an indispensable part of society with applications ranging from simple web browsing to critical healthcare diagnosis and cloud computing. Since users expect these services to always be available, careful engineering is required in all technologies ranging from component development to network operations. To achieve this understanding, this book first presents a comprehensive treatment of various optical fiber structures and diverse photonic components used in optical fiber networks. Following this discussion are the fundamental design principles of digital and analog optical fiber transmission links. The concluding chapters present the architectures and performance characteristics of optical networks.

Book excerpt: Fiber Optic Video Transmission: The Complete Guide is the only comprehensive reference to the techniques and hardware required to transmit video signals over optical fiber. As the broadcast industry moves to HDTV and enhanced television standards become the norm, fiber will become the medium of choice for video transmission, and this book is the essential guide to transmitting video over fiber optic cables. From the most basic video signal to complex multi-channel high definition video, this book details the methods of encoding video signals (including AM, FM, and digital encoding), the advantages and disadvantages of all encoding methods, and the expected performance of each method. A discussion of the the fiber optic components - such as lasers, LEDs, detectors, connectors, and other components - that are best for video transmission applications is also included. A glossary of terms, appendices of standards and publications, and a complete index round out this comprehensive guide.

Book excerpt: Fully updated, revised, and expanded, this second edition of Modern Cable Television Technology addresses the significant changes undergone by cable since 1999--including, most notably, its continued transformation from a system for delivery of television to a scalable-bandwidth platform for a broad range of communication services. It provides in-depth coverage of high speed data transmission, home networking, IP-based voice, optical dense wavelength division multiplexing, new video compression techniques, integrated voice/video/data transport, and much more. Intended as a day-to-day reference for cable engineers, this book illuminates all the technologies involved in building and maintaining a cable system. But it's also a great study guide for candidates for SCTE certification, and its careful explanations will benefit any technician whose work involves connecting to a cable system or building products that consume cable services. Features * The much-awaited second edition of an award-winning book, written by leading figures in the cable industry. * Organized to "follow the plant" from signal creation, through multiplexing, transmission, and, finally, reception and processing within consumer's premises. * Focuses on the practical, not the theoretical, and explains concepts and techniques using a minimum of mathematics. * Covers both analog and digital signals, as well as coaxial and fiber-optic broadband distribution systems. * Discusses system architecture in detail, including considerations relating to digital fiber modulation and network reliability. * Explores a wide range of customer interface issues, including analog and digital video reception, consumer electronics, and home networks. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of fibre optics communications has exploded over the past two decades. Fibre is an integral part of modern day communication infrastructure and can be found along roads, in buildings, hospitals and machinery. Fibre optic communication has revolutionised the telecommunications industry. It has also made its presence widely felt within the data networking community as well. Using fibre optic cable, optical communications have enabled telecommunications links to be made over much greater distances and with much lower levels of loss in the transmission medium and possibly most important of all, fiber optical communications has enabled much higher data rates to be accommodated. Optical fibers can be used to transmit light and thus information over long distances. Fiber-based systems have largely replaced radio transmitter systems for long-haul optical data transmission. They are widely used for telephony, but also for Internet traffic, long high-speed local area networks (LANs), cable TV (CATV), and increasingly also for shorter distances within buildings. In most cases, silica fibers are used, except for very short distances, where plastic optical fibers can be advantageous. The basic components are light signal transmitter, the optical fiber, and the photo detecting receiver. The additional elements such as fiber and cable splicers and connectors, regenerators, beam splitters, and optical amplifiers are employed to improve the performance of the communication system. The book offers a completely up-to-date, accessible, and in-depth introduction to the principles and applications of optical fiber communications. It describes the recent developments in optical fiber communication materials, devices, components, and systems.
