Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, seven of the chapters deal with feeding and diet, which is reasonable since insects consume an estimated l5-20% of all the world's planted crops. Many insects even have a specialized larval feeding stage that usually occupies a different ecological niche to the adult and so does not compete for the adult's food stock. Other chapters describe the means by which insects maintain their water balance, nitrogen balance and temperature balance under a range of conditions. These involve regulation by hormonal and behavioural systems that are also described here. The l4 chapters are all extensively illustrated and referenced and therefore provide excellent summaries of current knowledge. They will be of great value to entomologists, zoologists and biologists in general.

Book excerpt: Animal biotechnology is a broad umbrella encompassing the polarities of fundamental and applied research including molecular modelling, molecular and quantitative genetics, gene manipulation, development of diagnostics and vaccines and manipulation of tissue or digestion metabolism by growth promoters. Although animal biotechnology in the broadest sense is not new, what is new is the level of complexity and precision involved in scientists' current ability to manipulate living organisms. This new book sets out to show that the important ideas in animal biotechnology are exciting and relevant to everyday experience. It represents an important update of the literature for research workers, lecturers, and advisers in animal science, but is also a core text for advanced undergraduate courses in animal science and biotechnology. It will be an essential acquisition for librarians in agriculture and veterinary science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As stated in the preface to the first edition, this book is intended to be a review and not a comprehensive textbook of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The book covers only the highlights from the much more detailed knowledge that is usually found in textbooks and we recommend that the reader turn to several excellent texts for more detailed reference. The book is intended to help those who are studying for National Medical Board Examinations and for similar ex aminations in the Allied Health fields. Although there is now a new form of unified medical examination, NMSLE Stage 1, the basic knowledge required to pass the biochemistry portion of this examination has not changed to any marked degree. Two new chapters have been included that were not present in the first edi tion: Membranes and a chapter on Recombinant DNA Technology as related to medicine. The chapter on Genetic Diseases has been discontinued with the genetic now dispersed through the individual chapters information previously covered where appropriate. Each chapter has been carefully revised and rewritten where necessary and updated with the advent of new information. We have changed the question types that are included at the end of each chapter to conform more closely to the format now used in NMSLE examinations. As a general rule, words or other concepts which we consider to be of special importance have been por trayed in bold type, significant enzymes are in italics.
