Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resonance Acoustic Spectroscopy deals with the analysis of waves generated in an elastic body by a plane harmonic acoustic wave. It is the first monograph to treat new analytical and experimental methods for the investigation of the excitation, propagation and re-radiation of elastic waves in solid, thick-walled and thin-walled elastic scatterers. The material is presented systematically, comprising the formulation of the problem, method of solution, algorithm, computation and analysis. A large number of computational results are given in the form of modal resonances, form functions, dispersion curves and acoustic spectrograms. Particular attention is paid to the interpretation of the solutions.

Book excerpt: This volume contains a timely collection of research papers on the latest developments in the ever-increasing use of elastic waves in a variety of contexts. There are reports on wave-propagation in various types of media: in both isotropic and anisotropic bodies; in homogeneous and inhomogeneous media; in media with cracks or inclusions in random media; and in layered composites. The bulk of the papers are concerned with propagation in elastic media, but also included are viscoelastic, thermoelastic and magneto-electroelastic wave propagation, as well as waves in porous and piezo-electric bodies. Consideration is given to propagation in bodies as diverse as stretched elastic strings to surfaces such as thin walled cylinders, and thin films under stress. Applications considered include the determination of the depth of cracks; analysis of ground motions generated by a finite fault in seismology; surface wave spreading on piezo-electric solids; and dynamical stress intensity factors. Most of the papers are theoretical in nature, and many are complemented by numerical studies. Also included are a general survey on experimental techniques, and reports on experimental work. The volume will be of interest to those who do theoretical studies of elastic wave propagation and to those who apply elastic waves whether in seismology, non-destructive testing, the fabrication of devices or underwater acoustics, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last two subjects mentioned in the title "Wavelets" are so well established that they do not need any explanations. The first is related to them, but a short introduction is appropriate since the concept of wavelets emerged fairly recently. Roughly speaking, a wavelet decomposition is an expansion of an arbitrary function into smooth localized contributions labeled by a scale and a position pa rameter. Many of the ideas and techniques related to such expansions have existed for a long time and are widely used in mathematical analysis, theoretical physics and engineering. However, the rate of progress increased significantly when it was realized that these ideas could give rise to straightforward calculational methods applicable to different fields. The interdisciplinary structure (R.c.P. "Ondelettes") of the C.N .R.S. and help from the Societe Nationale Elf-Aquitaine greatly fostered these developments. This conference was held at the Centre National de Rencontres Mathematiques (C.I.R.M) in Marseille from December 14 to 18, 1987 and brought together an interdisciplinary mix of participants. We hope that these proceedings will convey to the reader some of the excitement and flavor of the meeting.

Including 40 papers that reflect his vast field of scientific activity, the contributions discuss non-standard methods (generalized model) to demonstrate the wide range of subjects that were covered by this exceptional scientific leader. The topics range from micromechanical basics to engineering applications, focusing on new models and applications of well-known models to new problems. They include micro–macro aspects, computational endeavors, options for identifying constitutive equations, and old problems with incorrect or non-satisfying solutions based on the classical continua assumptions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: CETTE ETUDE EST CONSACREE A LA DIFFUSION ACOUSTIQUE D'UNE ONDE PLANE PAR UN TUBE AUX PAROIS EXCENTREES IMMERGE DANS L'EAU. UNE SOLUTION ANALYTIQUE EXACTE, VALIDE INDEPENDAMMENT DE L'EXCENTRICITE, DE LA TAILLE, OU DE LA POSITION DE LA CAVITE A ETE CONSTRUITE. CETTE CONSTRUCTION FAIT APPEL AU FORMALISME DE LA SERIE DE DEBYE GENERALISEE, FORMALISME QUI DECOMPOSE L'INTERACTION GLOBALE EN UNE SERIE D'INTERACTIONS LOCALES REPRESENTEES PAR LES COEFFICIENTS DE REFLEXION ET DE TRANSMISSION LOCAUX. A PARTIR DE CES COEFFICIENTS, DES COEFFICIENTS DE REFLEXION ET DE TRANSMISSION DE L'ENERGIE ONT ETE INTRODUITS. NOUS AVONS MONTRE ANALYTIQUEMENT QUE LA LOI DE CONSERVATION DE L'ENERGIE S'EXPRIME SOUS UNE FORME SIMPLE AU MOYEN DE CES NOUVEAUX COEFFICIENTS. NOUS AVONS DEVELOPPE LA THEORIE DE LA DIFFUSION RESONNANTE MULTICANAUX, THEORIE INEXISTANTE EN DIFFUSION ACOUSTIQUE. AFIN DE CARACTERISER LES RESONANCES, LA MATRICE DE TRANSITION A ETE INTRODUITE. LA CONVERSION DE MODES ET LE DEDOUBLEMENT DES RESONANCES ONT ETE MIS EN EVIDENCE ET EXPLIQUES. CETTE EXPLICATION REPOSE SUR LE FAIT QUE DANS LA REGION DE FAIBLE EPAISSEUR DU TUBE ON A UNE VARIATION TRES FORTE D'IMPEDANCE. CETTE REGION DEVIENT UNE BARRIERE DE POTENTIEL POUR LA PROPAGATION. UNE PARTIE DE L'ENERGIE TRAVERSE CETTE REGION, ET UNE AUTRE PARTIE EST REFLECHIE D'OU LE DEDOUBLEMENT DES RESONANCES. LES DIAGRAMMES ANGULAIRES DE DIFFUSION MONTRENT QUE LA CONVERSION EST LIEE AUSSI A CETTE REGION. LES PRINCIPAUX RESULTATS ONT ETE VALIDES EXPERIMENTALEMENT
